I want to confess my love of the Music That Dare Not Speak It's Name..

I was listening this morning to some Randy Travis, and practically weeping with pleasure. The voice, the music, the wordplay, the depth of the storytelling..

does anyone else care to join me in spreading the Gospel and Praisin'?

Where are you Cappuccino?

I read that interview, Wendy. He chatted quite a bit between songs and came over exactly as in the interview. It was a mere chance that we got tickets. We came back to Scotland on Thurs and was scanning the local rag to see an article about dd's friend when I spotted a tiny article about KK. Dh got almost the last tickets.

OBat, 'HighLife' is the Nigerian music of choice, I believe. I learnt recently that Seal is Nigerian - he'll do for me!

motherinferior · 28/03/2008 19:11

Moondog, I am playing that song REALLY LOUDLY.

One of my many ploys for fending off Mr Inferior's various suggestions of getting married is an insistence that I'll only do it if we do it to the strains of Stand By Your Man. The Lyle Lovett cover version.

onebatmother · 29/03/2008 14:37

Oh do it do it! YOu must!

He should have known better when I put on Car Wheels on a Gravel Road the first time he stayed for breakfast

Please advise - any particular Travis and/or Prines? Am perusing local library catalogue at the moment.

motherinferior · 29/03/2008 18:56

onebatmother · 29/03/2008 19:59

I have a clutch of new/borrowed CDs.

Nobody else in the Inferiority Complex likes them. It's fabulously passive-aggressive on my part.

I bought Dolly Parton's Little Sparrow a while back having heard her sing the title song, thought it was excellent. Bluegrass is one of those types of music that whenever I hear the sound of I love it. I ought to look more into it really.

moondog · 30/03/2008 22:35

Yes,you should.It's a whole new world!

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 30/03/2008 22:39

care to recommend anything moondog?

moondog · 30/03/2008 22:42

I have done,with links

David Allen Coe
The Band
His Bobness (Nashville Skyline era)
Gram Parsons
Merle Haggard

Not hardscore (or bluegrass tbh) but if it aint country you can kiss my ass.

Work through some of other links here. They're brill

zippitippitoes · 30/03/2008 22:48

obvs ignore zippis links lolol

DaDaDa · 30/03/2008 23:06

Love a bit of Wilco

Hot Buritto 1 always gets me.

Nobody wore a pantsuit like Bobbie Gentry

Only borderline country but Pernice Brothers are worth a plug. I always thought this song was about divorce after parenthood, but maybe I was projecting....

elkiedee · 30/03/2008 23:08

I've liked Rosanne Cash for a long time but started discovering lots of other really brilliant musicians a few years ago - I read a newspaper article about Steve Earle and it sort of progressed from there.

www.emusic.com is a download website which is more expensive for uk subscribers than when I joined, but still I think much better value than itunes for those things you can get there. They are an indie label site

The age gap between Steve Earle (b 1955) and Allison Moorer (b 1972) is just 17 years, and yes, Allison Moorer is Shelby Lynne's younger sister.

Stuff which can be found on emusic as well as elsewhere, at least in part - many of the musicians have changed label several times so only some of their output will be on emusic

Some Steve Earle - inc Jerusalem I think and Just an American Boy
Allison Moorer, Mockingbird
Guy Clark, Workbench Songs
Townes Van Zandt stuff has been available there
Kate Campbell
Gillian Welch
Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer
Tracy Grammer on her own (following Dave Carter's sudden death)
Some Iris Dement
John Prine
Hayes Carll
Alejandro Escovedo
Sally Timms
Jon Langford
The Waco Brothers
The Pine Valley Cosmonauts
Patty Griffin
Caitlin Cary
Tres Chicas
Neko Case
Kelly Willis
Patty Booker
Lonesome Bob
Compilations which I found on emusic
Heartworn Highways is a mid-70s compilation which features early Earle and Guy Clark, and TVZ mentioned above, also David Allan Coe, Rodney Crowell and several others (there's a film too and it's available on DVD)
The Executioner's Death Song - 3 CDs worth of material involving many of the artists mentioned above singing songs about death and murder - Jon Langford is a hyperactive musician who has several different bands, does solo stuff and runs a record label, and an artist as well. Originally Welsh but lives in Chicago.

I also like
Alison Krauss
Rodney Crowell (ex husband of Rosanne Cash, played guitar in Emmylou Harris' Hot Band)
Johnny Cash
Emmylou Harris
Sarah Harmer
Kathleen Edwards
Patty Loveless
Ryan Adams
Whiskeytown
Freakwater
Bruce Robison (married to Kelly Willis)
Charlie Robison (who I think is married to one of the Dixie Chicks)
Dixie Chicks

zippitippitoes · 30/03/2008 23:10

oh shite steve earle is only two years older than me

i am definitely creepy then

elkiedee · 30/03/2008 23:11

oops, now I'm plugging in my ipod to redo the playlist on my old one (that was stolen) of songs with cowboy in the title. There was also one of "country" songs and one of "train" songs - not all are country and alt country but a surprising amount are - My Baby Thinks He's a Train, Trains Don't Run from Nashville and lots of others.

zippitippitoes · 30/03/2008 23:12

thats a very comprehensive looking post elkiedee
