How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

Maybe once every couple of months. We do tend to cook a steak or get fresh fish delivered on a sat when kids are with their dad. Neither of us really love take aways tbh

rottiemum88 · 27/06/2020 20:27

Generally have a takeaway every 1-2 weeks, at £20ish for the two of us, so between £40-80 per month depending.

kayakingmum · 27/06/2020 20:30

On average O times per month. Certainly haven't had one in the last 2 years. I don't really get the appeal. I really don't understand why anyone would get take away pizza. IMO nice fresh ones from the supermarket are far tastier, cheaper and quicker than take away ones.

Having said that if you like them, and they're worth it for you that's all that matters.

PinkDaffodil2 · 27/06/2020 20:31

Pre lockdown rarely, though once a month or so we’d go to the Chinese opposite and get a large chow mein, spicy chicken wings plus one other dish for about £18 for the two of us. Sometimes we’d get an Indian set meal for two for about £25 which would last a couple of evenings.
Now maybe every other week we’ll spend about £25 on Deliveroo - generally with a voucher. We could afford to get take out more but I’d rather buy better quality food to cook at home.

Wingingitsince2018 · 27/06/2020 20:33

Now, hardly ever as I was diagnosed with coeliac so its a bit of a minefield and not worth the hassle. Did have some delicious (gluten free) beer and pizza delivered from one of our favourite bars for our lockdown wedding anniversary, but it was eye-wateringly expensive and wouldn't do it without an occasion.

Before that, post DC, about 3 times per month. We have no local family so stopped going out to eat and substituted having deliveries from our favourite places.

Pre DC, maybe once a month, usually pizza when incredibly hungover! Ate out a lot though and would dread to think what we spent over the years. Other than when we existed on them for about a month when we had our kitchen done and had to sort out the bodge job done by the original builder.

I grew up in a family that had takeaway maybe twice a year, always fish and chips. Usually, if we couldn't be arsed with cooking it was waffles beans and eggs or whatever was in the freezer.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 27/06/2020 20:36

Since lockdown, £0

We used to get a takeaway on the way home from swimming, every Friday night.
Now, I buy the pizzas in Aldi (delicious)

BertieBotts · 27/06/2020 20:38

I think once a week as a regular thing is quite a lot! Especially as you'd end up going more than that in reality. We try to keep it to €60 which works out to about 2-3 times a month for budget reasons, but we always seem to spend about €80.

PAND0RA · 27/06/2020 20:38

Zero. Like many PP I find them disappointing and not a treat.

I can thing of better things to spend that much money and calories on.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/06/2020 20:42

I love the idea of a Chinese takeaway once in a while, then I remember why I don't do it too often, £30 for one meal for 2 people, just can't justify it when a weeks shopping is £80!

Lurchermom · 27/06/2020 20:44

Growing up we only ever had a takeaway on school concert nights (so once every three/four months). It was a real treat! As an adult we usually end up with a McDonald's once a week and perhaps a curry once a month. Probably £10-15 for McDonald's and £25 for the curry.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 27/06/2020 20:46

Never - we live in the middle of nowhere so no delivery and have only ever been disappointed when we’ve collected. I think I can cook ok so I’m not that fussed!!

SistemaAddict · 27/06/2020 20:51

@ItWillBeOkayOnTheNight what did you order for £73???

SantaMonicaPier · 27/06/2020 20:53

We usually get Chinese every three weeks or so.£35 ish for four of us

Lozz22 · 27/06/2020 20:55

A fiver about 6 months ago from the local chicken shop. Was ok but not something I'd have every week. Often fancy a Chinese but then I always remember the 3 lots of food poisoning I've had from them and change my mind. Sometimes think about getting an Indian from one of the restaurants in town but I much prefer actually going in and having a proper sit down meal and taking a bottle of wine with me. Not a lover of take away pizzas unless I've been out drinking. Although if we had a Pizza Hut here I'd order a take away maybe once a month from there

MondeoFan · 27/06/2020 20:55

Before lockdown probably around £30-£50 month. Since late February haven't spent on takeaways at all

Annoyedatyourbs · 27/06/2020 20:55

Weekly or every other week

Per month youre looking at 50 -70 depending on what we get.

mantlepiece · 27/06/2020 20:58

We have fish and chips every Friday , the only change to that would be the chip shop!
Other than that we would have Indian or Chinese takeaway once in a while.
However although there have always been the usual pizza, chicken shop, burger bar, kebab shop outlets they have never appealed to us.

Lately though in our not very cosmopolitan area we have noticed there are ever more diverse takeaway options!
Thai, Mexican, Italian etc as the restaurants are now offering takeaway. It is very tempting and we have enjoyed trying these out during lockdown.
I don’t know if it peculiar to our area but one of the biggest seller takeaway is Sunday Dinner! Most of the restaurants round here offer that and they do a roaring trade.
The latest craze round here is seafood platters. They are cold but ready to eat, and there are queues down the street! They are meat plate size with lobster, dressed crab and an assortment of mussels and prawns garnished with salad and pots of sauce. People pay £30 to £60 for these.
The Mediterranean restaurants have started doing cold platters too. Theirs are cold meats, cheese, marinated vegetables and fish with various dips, these are quite pricey too!

There is certainly a market for all this food so I’m thinking mumsnet is not a good cross section of the nation as a whole. People are spending a fortune at these places.

transformandriseup · 27/06/2020 21:10

Since lockdown about once a month (£20) but we don't usually get one at all and prefer to eat out as a treat (about every 6 weeks)

Growing up we had fish and chips once a week.

randolph78 · 27/06/2020 21:13

Normally about every 6-8 weeks we'll get a takeaway and I guess we get about 5 mcDonald lunches a year too (when out, we don't go there specially). We are a family of 4. We all have happy meals as they're fine for a lunch so that's around £10-£11 a lunch. Other takeaways are about £25-30 for the 4 of us. We don't get desserts or extras to put in the fridge for later.

WarmthAndDepth · 27/06/2020 21:27

We have a take away once a year on one family member's birthday, so approximately £30 pa.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/06/2020 21:31

We are a family of 4 adults and a decent takeaway costs us £50 to £60.

So in normal times we probably have one every other month. In lockdown we have had one, on our wedding anniversary.

I would never eat McDonalds. I guess the teens do sometimes when they are out and about.

fluffi · 27/06/2020 22:01

Would love to have a takeaway every week so many choices here, caribbean, thai, turkish, greek, indian, chinese as well as pizza and burgers!

However I'd have to eat so carefully for rest of the week that its not worth it weekly Grin. Tends to be once a year!

TheFairyCaravan · 27/06/2020 22:13

We usually get a Chinese when all the kids come home so maybe 3-4 times a year.

We live in the sticks, no one delivers and it's a hassle going out for it.

MrsPworkingmummy · 27/06/2020 22:46

We buy a take away at least once a week. Yesterday, for example, we had Glastonbury platters delivered for £34 (chilli beef nachos with accompiments , flat breads and various olives, hummus etc and a cheese board with chutneys etc). During covid, we've ordered from a local Italian restaurant once per week at a cost of around £30. If we get Indian or Chinese, we'd spend around £25. So, at least £100 a week overall. Pre covid, we ate out at least once a week and bought one take away a week too.

ittooshallpass · 28/06/2020 00:11

I've never had a takeaway delivered. Pre lockdown we'd have fish and chips maybe once every couple of months but that's it.

I didn't realise that so many people had takeaways so regularly until lockdown!
