How much do you spend on takeaway/delivery each month?

Hi

My mum and dad would usually get a takeaway each weekend like chinese or Indian food when I was growing up. Im now married and thinking to myself what is the average for a monthly spend on takeaways?? One on a Saturday night... a mcdonalds in the week... is that normal? Say every Saturday night to order pizza, Chinese or Indian so around £20-25. My husband doesn’t like the idea of ordering food for delivery obviously it’s a lot more money and it’s normally bad for you etc.. I just think of it as a normal thing that most households do a minimum of once a week! Especially if you can afford it and at the end of a hard working week fancy a treat! Tell me your weekly or monthly takeaway amount 😀😀

About once a month for 3 people normally around £23 for KFC or fish and chips. If we splash out and get Chinese it’s around £50 as we get all the sides as well as mains. Only have Chinese about twice a year though. I prefer fish and chips though and my mouth is now watering!

SerendipitySunshine · 28/06/2020 08:55

Not for months. At the moment I dont trust they are covid free. Plus, we normally just make our own. I get an ocado or waitrose shop once a month with luxuries I cant get elsewhere (rest comes from local independents) and it is less than the £160 it would cost for a weekly takeaway.

Tartan333 · 28/06/2020 09:02

A takeaway once a week during lockdown, sometimes twice. Pre lockdown on a Saturday we would either have a takeaway or go out for a meal/cinema/gig on Saturday evenings.

I guess it's at least £30 per week (usually Chinese, Thai, Indian, occasionally pizza)
I think it's a normal thing to do and enjoy looking forward to it and not cooking that evening. Most people I know have very regular takeaways.

frenchfancy81 · 28/06/2020 09:08

Once every 2 months I'd say and costs around £30 for 2. Prefer 'real' dinners but enjoy them occasionally.

thisstooshallpass · 28/06/2020 09:41

Rarely. Probably have fish and chips every 3 months.

I'm always disappointed in takeaways.

MotherMorph · 28/06/2020 09:45

We got fish and chips for 4 of us on Friday (2 adults, 2 DC) and it was less than £20.
We would probably get a take away no more than once a month (usually indian) and prob spend 30-40.

Notnownotneverever · 28/06/2020 09:52

I think you’ll find the incomes on here too varied to get a true response. It doesn’t matter what others do, it is what you can afford that matters. Takeaways are expensive so it depends is you are saving for anything or in debt. A £25 takeaway every Saturday costs £1300 a year. If you think of it in savings it depends what else you need and how much the chilled takeaway evening means to you.

Bowchicawow · 28/06/2020 16:21

Oh dear i feel extravagant. I love chinese food so about £100/month

Personally I find cooking time consuming, dull after 6 days x 2 meals (during lockdown) and you have to clean up after. My local does healthier less greasy/salty versions on request (but I prefer full fat one Smile)

Comefromaway · 28/06/2020 16:23

Since lockdown we’ve been spending £35-40 per week on a chippy/pizza delivery. But we do save half the pizza so it does two meals.

However we are saving £700 per month on restaurant meals out.

SionnachRua · 28/06/2020 16:28

Maybe once every 2-3 weeks. It's always either Thai from our favourite restaurant, a kebab from fave place or Indian. Probably about 40 euro a pop (less for the kebabs).

Wouldn't bother with takeaway pizza, it's very easy to make much tastier pizza at home!

cretelover · 28/06/2020 16:29

Before lockdown about once every 5 weeks between 2 of us. £25 and enough to do lunch as well. Ate out cheaply about once a week, mcdonalds or chippy, cafe, garden centre sandwich type thing. Since lockdown we have not had any take aways and have been to mcdonalds last week for the first time (£10) although I guess that's a takeaway.

Woeismethischristmas · 28/06/2020 16:34

Fish and chips once a month on average. We do have weekly pizza night but homemade. I think I'd rather spend money on better ingredients and make it myself. I make my own burgers, brioche bun, steak mince with a little pork mince mixed through. I like to put stilton in the middle, costs about 1.50. I'd struggle to eat a McDonalds as would the dc.

purplecorkheart · 28/06/2020 16:36

We get a chinese once every three to four weeks or so. Normally spend about €50 for three of us. That included a €5 tip for the delivery person. Portions are big so that also gives three lunches the next day.

We would get a takeaway more if there more options nearby.

CountFosco · 28/06/2020 16:38

We had a takeaway this weekend but it was from a local restaurant that only started doing them in lockdown. We got a main course for each of us (2 adults, 3DC but eating adult portions) and it cost £60. We get fish and chips maybe 3 or 4 times a year. Takeaways are pretty rubbish most of the time and I hate that they are lukewarm in comparison to homemade food so am not really tempted.

gingercat02 · 28/06/2020 16:41

Once a week (Friday usually) normally Indian/Chinese/Pizza but all our local restaurants are doing takeaway atm so much more varied. Around £30 for the 3 of us. Never Maccy D/KFC/etc we don't like them

MilaRos · 28/06/2020 16:43

Before lock down probably about £30-40 once a month. Now we have one at least once every 2 weeks if not more!

Japa · 28/06/2020 16:53

Never have takeaways.
It doesn't fit in the budget.

tiredmedic · 01/07/2020 12:39

I'm quite surprised at the amount a lot of people spend on takeaways, seemingly a "treat" but on a regular basis. Just wow. There's only two of us here and a few years ago when times were hard, we didn't eat out except for a fortnightly meal from Maccy Ds saver menu (so less than £6 for two) and a meal deal from the supermarket once a month. We'd get cheap pizzas (supermarket again) once a week with own brand oven chips and the rest of the time the cheapest food we could find. It taught us how we didn't need "treats" and because of that plus running cheap old bangers, we're now mortgage free and apart from lending a friend a grand to insure a (our) car to get a job at very short notice, we're debt free too. A treat is a treat and under no circumstances, unless you've got money to burn, should it be a regular spend. We're in a deep recession, soon to become a depression and facing that situation, get in the damn kitchen and cook......unless you're the type of person who thinks life ain't worth it without regular "treats" as opposed to occasional treats, well......

Rigorousyetcalm · 01/07/2020 12:50

£0. Wasn’t something that happened growing up. It would never to occur to me to order takeaway food.
My neighbours on one side do it frequently e.g. Macdonalds for breakfast and KFC at midnight.

WhatHaveIFound · 01/07/2020 12:58

Not for us. I don't think we've ordered a takeaway for over 10 years. Very occasionally had them at my parents house - probably once or twice a year.

BeautifulCrazy · 02/07/2020 23:28

Or you could stop telling people how to spend their money...they may not want to ‘get in the damn kitchen.’ 🙄

netflixismysidehustle · 02/07/2020 23:30

One a fortnight here- it's me and 3 teens.

We're also mortgage free with money to spare and both secure jobs. Surely by spending money on a take out (I'm not calling it a treat) I'm supporting small local businesses and therefore helping to stop the recession and prevent a Great Depression?
BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/07/2020 08:42

Usually about twice a month but during lockdown it has been weekly. We’ve spent a lot less overall though as no lunches/coffee out or dinners in restaurants.

The local Indian is amazing ... £60ish for 4 of us (late teens) .... we were very excited when they went out last weekend for a socially distant bbq and we were able to get a £30 delivery Grin

BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/07/2020 08:44

If I had to live like that to be debt free I think I’d fall into a depression myself. Different if you absolutely have to.
