Booster protection wanes after 10 weeks against omicron….

Just seen this on the BBC news
… mine was 13 1/2 weeks ago and I’ve just volunteered to cover extra shifts outside of my normal area of work in the NHS should the need arise.

@vodkaredbullgirl that’s exactly what I thought but I won’t be having one until my dc have had their 2 doses. It’s not feeling very fair atm.

I'm not sure I'd have another 'original variant' booster. Can't see the point if antibodies wane so quickly. One specific to the variants in circulation? Yes, absolutely, in a heart beat. But another of teh same seems a bit pointless.

I'm still suffering the after effects from 1&2 and I've just had my booster on top so now I'm in pain on top of ringing ears and a thyroid going tits up if they can't make a vaccine that lasts for longer I'm not getting another one they are making me fucking sick ffs I'm tired of this

It’s not a complete drop off a cliff though - it doesn’t go from 75% likely to prevent symptomatic infection to 0% overnight at 10 weeks.

And then there’s also the fact that it is still likely to provide very high levels of protection against serious illness long after it starts to wane in terms of protection against any form of symptomatic infection.

Obviously would be better news if it remained at full protection for longer than 10 weeks but at 13 weeks I bet you’ll still have extremely good protection from the most serious symptoms developing.

Did you have your third booster? 1st and 2nd dose do not protect against Omicron, according to Imperial College,

I doubt very much the 3rd booster does either, But thankfully omicron has proved to be very mild so I guess we are all getting re vaccinated not to give a chance for a new variant to emerge with the infectious level of omicron and the aggressiveness of the first variants.

My other theory is that this vaccination frenzy is in place just to distract Joe public from Boris’ high levels of corruption as there were hardly a couple of weeks before Omicron emergence and Boris claiming that a third dose would protect us all, what bloody data did he have? Can they improve a new vaccine and generate enough data to assess efficacy of the third booster? Absolutely not but again, having a third booster help us to reduce the likelihood of a more dangerous variant appearing so just for that it is worth it.

11 weeks after mine, and I am on the border of CV/CEV.

However, I am trying to get pregnant and all three jabs have significantly messed up my cycle. Each time, they brought ovulation forwards so much that either we didn’t DTD in time/enough, or one month making ovulation so early (CD9) that my egg was not even mature before it was released.

I have been mulling this over and the fact that I am rapidly approaching 40 means I cannot afford to waste any more cycles on unpredictable ovulation. If I have to shield as much as possible while we TTC then that is a risk I will have to take.

Omicron was first reported to WHO on 24 November, which is just over 4 weeks ago, and was first spotted a bit early that month

The bbc article says protection against getting it starts to wane at 10 weeks, but that protection against severe illness is likely to be “far more robust”.
Which I hope is true, I got my booster last week at 16 weeks pregnant. I wanted to wait a little longer to ensure my protection was as high as possible during the third trimester when covid is most risky to pregnant women but everything said the protection from this one should last longer.

Now that even the boosted are going to be classed as unvaccinated, maybe we can charge them for their NHS care to if they catch covid?

For most, it's mild. If you have underlying conditions and rely on the booster for protection, this is a bit of a worry.

Also, other variants are still out there! Where I am Delta still accounts for almost 50% of cases and that number doesn't seem to be changing much. Hopefully the boosters offer better, longer protection against it.

To be honest, I don’t think I can face yet another jab. Three vaccines in less than a year is a lot. Now they are talking about a fourth.

If 3-4 vaccines a year is what we are looking at for life, I just don’t think I can face that.

Something has to give eventually.

Existing NHS burdens
Disabling impact of long Covid on a growing number of people, especially women!
The disabled, the elderly & CEV
Side effects of the vaccines which put people off getting their boosters, eg) feeling shit for a fortnight or even longer (see PP)

I agree another booster seems like a headache. Hugely costly in so many areas. But what are the alternatives?

If people had boosters 3, 4 , 5 months ago, then the response of those people to omicron can be evaluated.
