Just seen this on the BBC news
… mine was 13 1/2 weeks ago and I’ve just volunteered to cover extra shifts outside of my normal area of work in the NHS should the need arise.
Oh heck…..

Most Africans haven’t been offered a vaccine at all!

The WHO says that boosters may prolong the pandemic…

Remmy123 · 24/12/2021 06:53

It's just a mild virus!!

Suzi888 · 24/12/2021 06:53

@GreenLunchBox

Omicron is mild. I think we all need to just move on
Scientists have said Omicron is mild. I don’t understand the hysteria, do you generally worry about catching a cold.Confused
Mummyoflittledragon · 24/12/2021 06:57

@Theunamedcat

I'm still suffering the after effects from 1&2 and I've just had my booster on top so now I'm in pain on top of ringing ears and a thyroid going tits up if they can't make a vaccine that lasts for longer I'm not getting another one they are making me fucking sick ffs I'm tired of this
I didn’t have the booster for the same reason. Chronic pain and fibromyalgia plus chronic fatigue. Pain and fatigue still highly increased but improving 7 months on. Can still feel heart beating constantly. Range of movement decreased. Frozen shoulders still present plus resultant increased pain and muscle tension in arms. Shortened tendons at Achilles. I agree. Please do not have another one.
Aposterhasnoname · 24/12/2021 06:59

Obviously they are getting this information from people who have had their boosters ten weeks or more ago. How long omicron has been around is irrelevant.

That said, this will be against symptomatic covid, not hospitalisation, so more scaremongering.

I agree. I think masks should remain for some time. But otherwise I think it's time to move on. I actually know an extremely clinically vulnerable person who has just had Covid. I was very worried when I found out. She's triple jabbed, but her booster was ages ago. Anyway, her symptoms were extremely mild. She had a mild chesty cough, which she often has anyway. Definitely Omicron, as she caught it on a trip to London. It's left me convinced that it's a much milder strain. I know there's still a lot of Delta around, so we need to still be careful. But Omicron will take over soon, and then I think things will get loads better. All the fear is terrible for our mental health, and our immune systems; and all the societal division is causing so much emotional pain and hurt. I think soon we need to get back to some kind of normal. We can't go on like this...
Festivequiz · 24/12/2021 07:00

@Remmy123 - please tell my body that it’s just a mild virus! It didn’t get the memo!

Still too sick to work over a year after having it with debilitating fatigue, insomnia, memory issues and headaches. Just exactly HOW is that mild?

Bobholll · 24/12/2021 07:06

You are in the small minority though @Festivequiz - not to dismiss your struggles but it IS mild for most people. I’ve had it twice & while I felt quite poorly second time, I’m fine. I can’t smell much still but otherwise completely recovered both times. And I know no-one who has suffered long term effects at all. And pretty much everyone I know has had covid now 🙈

Bobholll · 24/12/2021 07:07

I think this thread title is misleading. The article says it starts to wain at 10 weeks and that’s from catching it. Protection against serious illness is thought to be much more robust.

walksen · 24/12/2021 07:08

"Omicron is mild. I think we all need to just move on".

Covid has always been 'mild'. Most people have recovered at home. Alpha was 'mild' compared to delta.

There's still a lot of uncertainty about hospitalisations but it's just "mild like a cold" narrative is a bit simplistic. After all the most vulnerable people who were boosted first will have protection that has already waned, just as Christmas mixing will cause a surge in infections. Let's hope the hospitalisations match the it's mild narrative.

It was only last week people were saying it's so mild no one had died from it - until they did.

anotherbrewplease · 24/12/2021 07:12

To be honest, I don’t think I can face yet another jab. Three vaccines in less than a year is a lot. Now they are talking about a fourth

I was offered another jab yesterday - for the pneumonia vaccine - which I happily took. Still don't get why having a jab to prevent you getting seriously ill is such a problem.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 24/12/2021 07:13

If it starts to wane at 10 weeks, then hopefully I should get through my Christmas shifts unfettered by the lurgy < fingers crossed > . Happy to have another booster in January if neccessary, to get through the peak.

Sparklingbrook · 24/12/2021 07:16

If they want me to have another booster that's fine with me.

walksen · 24/12/2021 07:17

The graphic below from the report suggests waning starts from week 5.

Booster protection wanes after 10 weeks against omicron….
anotherbrewplease · 24/12/2021 07:17

@Bobholll not really convinced that 1.2 million people would agree with you (and that was recorded in October 2021).

Your friends are fortunate that they didn't get long covid.

Have you been confirmed as having Omicron? Delta is still about so could it be that strain you have? Not being goady, just genuinely curious to know if people get told what strain it is or if they just receive a text saying they are positive and not told what they have.

rockinghorsebadge · 24/12/2021 07:19

@Decaffe

11 weeks after mine, and I am on the border of CV/CEV.

However, I am trying to get pregnant and all three jabs have significantly messed up my cycle. Each time, they brought ovulation forwards so much that either we didn’t DTD in time/enough, or one month making ovulation so early (CD9) that my egg was not even mature before it was released.

I have been mulling this over and the fact that I am rapidly approaching 40 means I cannot afford to waste any more cycles on unpredictable ovulation. If I have to shield as much as possible while we TTC then that is a risk I will have to take.

How could you know whether your egg was mature or not?

Honestly, this place

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 24/12/2021 07:19

I'm up to date with my vaccines, but beginning to feel enough is enough now.

Porfre · 24/12/2021 07:21

At the current rate they are jabbing about 850,000 a day.
Theres about 52.8 million adults in the UK.

At the current rate of vaccination it takes about 62 days to vaccinate the whole adult population not including kids. That's nearly 9 weeks. Using a lot of NHS resources.

So basically the NHS should just keep jabbing everyone, and postpone everything else. GP's are already postponing routine appointments to get to the current vaccination rate.

You cant keep jabbing everyone, every few weeks at smaller intervals. It's not sustainable. The jabs need updating so that they are more effective against the new variants- similar to an annual flu jab.

Next we'll get a news story about how jabs need to be given monthly to remain effective.

Exactly. And wasn’t it the same article that also said this:

Studies from around the world are painting a consistent picture that Omicron is milder than the Delta variant, with a 30% to 70% lower chance of people infected ending up in hospital.

But obviously it’s more fun to catastrophize.

Anotheryear2022 · 24/12/2021 07:21

I’m due my booster, going to book it for just after Xmas … but for what? I’m starting to not want it as I don’t see the point tbh. And yes I’m sure I’ll have everyone telling me I’m stupid.
But am I? Really? If you actually think about it…I don’t know

Anotheryear2022 · 24/12/2021 07:23

I really am starting to feel like we should just get on with it! Catch it…

herecomesthsun · 24/12/2021 07:24

It is probably more important to get another booster if you are

immunosuppressed
over 60
formerly shielding
in healthcare/ caring for vulnerable people
otherwise very exposed in a frontline job

Mind you, that's a lot of people.

Anotheryear2022 · 24/12/2021 07:26

And my children won’t be getting vaccinated, which I know is an unpopular opinion. I’m double vaccinated (but no booster yet) but I’m not making the decision for my kids to be vaccinated until we know much more about the long term effects of the jabs (yes I know people will be horrified! And think I’m stupid!.. but that’s ok with me)

bluetongue · 24/12/2021 07:29

@paranoidnamechanger

Will this nightmare ever end?
I know. I had the booster to do the ‘right thing’.

Until they come me out with a variant specific vaccine I’m out.
