UK lockdown

What day do you think we are likely to go into lockdown if another one is introduced?

We have our wedding day on the 27th but I can't say it's looking too promising. Anybody know when they are planning on making an announcement?

The Sun has this www.thesun.co.uk/health/17081722/covid-restrictions-omicron-boxing-day/

ApricotStew · 18/12/2021 22:48

I don't think many people want more restrictions, but we all want enough fire fighters, ambulance drivers, refuse collectors, teachers etc don't we?

I don't know why people can't see this. My neighbour waited 5 hours for an ambulance last week, and one finally arrived from over 40 miles away. He's ok now, as it happens, but it can only get worse the way things are going.

It's not just pubs being closed, or theatres shut. It's the whole of society's support infrastructure at risk.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 18/12/2021 22:48

@Tulipomania this has little to do with masks, and everything to do with the mis-management of the situation from the get-go.

Suzi888 · 18/12/2021 22:49

@Treez21

Am I going to be the only one in complete shock if this does actually happen??
No, I will be too! Can’t see another lockdown. I think pressure, doom etc will make people ditch plans so pubs, bars may close.
Wondergirl100 · 18/12/2021 22:49

Will people follow the rules? Rule of six when we are all fully vaccinateDd? You have to be kidding. Stopping people having family over when they have had so many missed meetings and everyone is fully vaxxed plus we have lateral flow tests. Again - you must be kidding

The rules last winter were cruel and overly harsh - particularly to children. Stopping kids even playing in parks with friends, stopping families meeting outside - total unscientific bullshit.

The idea that you could bring back these harsh laws - when many of us have had THREE vaccines??? The myth on twitter seems to be that anti vaxxers and anti lockdown group are the same. They really are not

Most people I know have had all their vaccines and oppose further lockdown.

IcedPurple · 18/12/2021 22:49

@Tulipomania

I am so angry that we are in this situation.

Germany has just banned people from the UK, as well as France.

If we had been a little more responsible, keeping mask wearing and requiring proof of vaccines to enter venues, as some other countries did, I really think we would not be in this situation now.

Boris and his fucking Tory cronies have so much to answer to. What is the point in 'freedom' not to wear a mask if the eventual consequence is another greater restriction on our movements.

Utterly, utterly pathetic. We should never have stopped mask wearing.

MN is obsessed with masks.

There's no way a highly infectious variant is going to be stopped just because people wear masks in Tesco's. Omnicron is spreading everywhere, even in those countries where people wear those 'proper masks' MN is so fond of.

Marmite17 · 18/12/2021 22:50

Guessing more restrictions will be announced between 27th and 30th. So before New Year parties.

Wondergirl100 · 18/12/2021 22:51

Sadly one of the reasons we have a shortage of staff is because the NHS has been run into the ground - we have failed to train/ recruit/ keeep nurses and doctors, we fail to pay them and we fail to run services properly.

Secondly - we have not at ANY TIME in this pandemic paid people to isolate if they are either a close contact or they have covid. This is incredible to me - nordic countries pay full salary to anyone having to isolate - why would we not? It is legally required to stay home and not work - therefore anyone on zero hours// a taxi driver/ supermarket worker on minimum statutory sick pay - can't afford to.

This pandemic has been driven by people who could not afford to isolate staying in work when they felt unwell or were a covid contact - it spread in care homes/ factories/ meat packing plants/ on buses.

It absolutely did not spread thorugh people meeting friends in parks - but that is where the govt focused shame. Much easier to terrify people into staying home alone than put in place proper measures to stop the virus spreading.

HamSam · 18/12/2021 22:54

@the80sweregreat

It's been brewing for weeks hasnt it? Very cleverly orchestrated and people are already locking down on their own It is on the cards now I feel , but just hope it's quick and doesn't drag on too long
Some people are.... but some people really aren't! Confused

There's going to be some serious case and probably hospitalisation numbers coming soon.

Gensola · 18/12/2021 22:55

ICUs are full of unvaccinated people who are essentially now causing lockdown for us all. Time to lockdown the unvaccinated and let the rest of us go about our lives.

EleonorBronte · 18/12/2021 23:00

If people were so fucking bothered about the NHS, then the tories wouldnt have won every election since 2010.

Stop strong-arming people into submission with this 'our nhs' and 'poor poor nhs' crap, ok?

I happily fund this entity the gov have beaten down into a pulp, I would do this for life and pay higher taxes to accommodate it.

If people are so worried about the NHS they would fucking think about it when they vote ffs.

Livelovebehappy · 18/12/2021 23:04

Is anyone else feeling a real sense of doom and gloom about all this? I just feel that 2022 is going to be worse than the last two years we’ve had. It just seems there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. I felt optimistic when the vaccines were introduced, and really thought everything was going to be okay. Now everything feels so scary and uncertain.

sarah13xx · 18/12/2021 23:10

don't think many people want more restrictions, but we all want enough fire fighters, ambulance drivers, refuse collectors, teachers etc don't we?

Can we add dominos delivery drivers to this list please? Where I stay they all have covid, we’re isolating and I was gutted tonight that we couldn’t get one 💔 The fourth (fifth?) emergency service in my eyes

sarah13xx · 18/12/2021 23:13

@Livelovebehappy yip, with you on that one. I’m waiting on PCR results but fully feeling a blocked nose coming on so I’m 95% sure I have it and we already know my partner does. I hate knowing I have it but potentially only just caught it so some horrible symptoms could be on their way but not hit me yet 😭

Surely if omicron is growing this fast everyone has to sort of get it (probably already got it) then the numbers will go back down early 2022. Just wish we knew that omicron was definitely mild symptoms and not many deaths, I’d feel safer having delta at this point I think

The vaccines stop a lot of deaths and severe illness but they’re not as robust against Omicron as with Delta so it’s a few steps backwards for us which isn’t good news.

This is what living with Covid will be like for the foreseeable future though, we’ll make small gains and have failures along the way. It could be much worse if we didn’t have the vaccines and Omicron had happened.

It will be interesting to see the true hospitalisation numbers broken down by vaccination status in the coming weeks. If the unvaccinated are disproportionately affected this time then I expect the government will make vaccination mandatory under the guise of avoiding future lockdowns.

It is looking that way though isn't it? Any death is sad but deaths don't seem to be outstripping Delta.

@sausagepastapot

Have your jabs, wear a mask, delete the app and enjoy your life!
Wtf has the app got to do with it? Away you fuck you chronic arsehole.
AnnieSmithson · 18/12/2021 23:17

It won’t be called lockdown but tighter restrictions will come in to force

If you stop reading mumsnet covid page, switch off TV, close social media, do you still feel scared?
Gwenhwyfar · 18/12/2021 23:20

"My advice is to get to the charity shops in the next couple of days if possible, get stocked up on books just in case."

Why? Are they switching the Internet off as well?

Chessie678 · 18/12/2021 23:24

Right now covid hospitalisations aren’t that high and it isn’t omicron which is causing pressure on the nhs or delays with ambulances. There are 7k patients with covid in hospital which is around 5% of beds. Only 85 are identified as having omicron and some of them may already have been in hospital. Around 900 ventilators are used for covid patients but the UK has 30k available (albeit that not all of them could be staffed).

So there probably is huge pressure on the NHS but right now most of it isn’t caused by covid and the covid hospitalisation situation hasn’t really changed much in the last month.

Clearly it may get much worse but if we lockdown now it will be based on SAGE’s quite possibly unreliable predictions not the situation as it is today.

We don’t even really know how many omicron cases there are.

OMG12 · 18/12/2021 23:25

We really need to be focusing on vaccinating Africa - 8.1% vaccinated apparently-many immunocompromised people, high rates of poverty ideal situation for mutation and spread.

The unvaccinated here aren’t going to change their minds, at this point I’m pretty confident it’s mostly
A decision they’re happy with and are entitled to make it’s pointless to spend lots of effort there.

I’ve had 3 vaccines as has my DH. We have both got COVID he’s had 3 nights in hospital as he’s been so unwell (he does have a compromised immune system). We are both out of isolation before Christmas and hoping we can salvage something for the children.

Agree with you completely, we just need to get on with things now and the unvaccinated can take their chances, their choice.
Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 18/12/2021 23:33

Being selfish I don't mind January lock down. It saved driving in bad conditions, in the dark and it was fantastic to be safe and not have the stress every day of being in "lock down" but having to work??

I would be happy with a few weeks in January. It's my worst month and I don't mind hunkering down.
That's being totally selfish of course.
