What day do you think we are likely to go into lockdown if another one is introduced?

We have our wedding day on the 27th but I can't say it's looking too promising. Anybody know when they are planning on making an announcement?

Any qualified scientists on here tonight with an opinion? Should a 2w circuit breaker take place and if so, why delay until after Christmas?

I don’t think waiting until after Christmas would be a scientific decision, but a political/social one.

Exactly. If it wasn't for Christmas, we'd have been in lockdown/a circuit breaker with restrictions on indoor mixing already.

As unpalatable as this is, I don’t see how this can be avoided at this point.

How do you mean “ready”? I don’t think anyone wants it, but a lot of us are resigned to it. They aren’t going to get to a million cases a day and do nothing, are they? That isn’t doom-mongering, it’s noticing which way the wind is blowing

^^ This. The longer we carry on as we are, the more the pressure on hospitals and increases in deaths and the longer/stricter lockdown needed when we do have one.

Lockdown "more stringent measures" will take effect from the 28th because the 27th is a Bank Holiday*

Scotland locked down on 26 December last year. Bank holidays mean nothing.

Will it be lockdown or lockdown Downing Street style in which case we can all ignore it.

It's a pain in the arse and I don't want to be locked down but if we are then we are, there's sweet FA anyone can do about it other than be prepared.

My advice is to get to the charity shops in the next couple of days if possible, get stocked up on books just in case.

Worth noting regarding the Netherlands comparison, their hospitalisation rates are higher than they were left year in Netherlands - ours are still much, much lower. I’m sure if we fit 60,000 in hospital again we’ll lockdown but impossible to predict if it will go that way (predictions now saying a peak of 170,000 - which would equal potentially 20,000 in hospital weekly at current rates).

I've been stocking up on books and adding box sets / films to my watchlists ready for Dry January. Looks like I may be starting a bit early!

I don’t want a lockdown but sadly I think it’s plainly obvious from the numbers that we need one😩. I think so many don’t understand that the aim of a lockdown isn’t just to ‘save lives’ it’s actually to prevent infrastructure collapse - number 1 the nhs, 2 the police, 3 prison service etc etc….if there are too many off sick all these services will stop….and where does that leave us? OP, I’m so sorry, I think it’s possible you’ll get your day as I reckon they’re trying to get through Christmas and then bring in restrictions….obviously there’s no guarantee. I don't think many people want more restrictions, but we all want enough fire fighters, ambulance drivers, refuse collectors, teachers etc don't we?

Oh God, I do not want another lockdown. I have family who work in hospitality, they can't afford to lose any more income. They're already dealing with lots of cancellations.

Makes my heart sink just to think about it.

I work for the NHS not sure if it's just my hospital but the Scottish rules of isolation if a family member is positive we are not to isolate.

We’re now isolating over Christmas. We’ve always been careful and have never had covid that we’ve known of through the whole pandemic. I was supposed to be going to a friends tonight so I was taking a pcr and made DH do one too (he wasn’t coming). He had a blocked nose, not even a cold but he’s now had two positive lateral flows! We’ve all been for a PCR but that’s us in over Christmas now 😔 I think lockdown or something stricter than what we have is the only option. They also need to clamp down on these folk who just think they’re above us all and can wander about maskless. Multiple times this week I’ve been in a queue at the supermarket with a maskless person behind me breathing down my neck and inching forward every time I move the slightest bit to get away from them 🤦🏼‍♀️ Do what you like but just don’t inflict your choices on everyone else who don’t want your covid!

Million cases a day is pure scaremongering, that said her immunity is a given.

Hospitalisations are still fairly low. Case numbers don’t matter as much.

Cases do matter.

The more cases that are allowed to happen the more hospitalisations and deaths will follow. (After a lag)
