Independent sage: circuit breaker lockdown needed now

551 replies

XmasGoose · 15/12/2021 18:01

I see Independent Sage have said that an immediate circuit breaker lockdown is needed to protect the NHS.

This would involve a total ban on household mixing, all bars, restaurants and indoor venues closing and schools shutting early for Christmas.

Is this needed now to protect the NHS and save lives? Personally I wouldn’t comply with another lockdown.

Indy sage are (and always have been) a group of people who were pissed off to not have been key parts of sage proper. They always say the opposite of what the government do. If boris has locked down this week, they would say "boris should be considering mental health, cancer etc before doing this"

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 15/12/2021 18:22

Circuit breaker during Xmas holiday does sound like an ok compromise

Mickarooni · 15/12/2021 18:22

Independent Sage (and others) don’t seem to be able to fully appreciate the risk that lockdowns bring to the physical, emotional and financial health of the population. I’m aware letting covid run wild will also have an impact. However, it needs to be weighed and balanced. We have to choose the ‘least worst’ option. I know it’s unpalatable.

@XenoBitch

I heard this on the radio earlier and it stuck with me...

"I would rather die living, than live dying"

@XenoBitch My elderly DF said something very similar to this in the very first lockdown, before bubbles came about he was living alone and carried on visiting us all after a week of isolating, if we need to lockdown when people have had 3 vaccines it's never going to end so there's no point to it, none of us are getting out alive are we Grin
IcedPurple · 15/12/2021 18:25

Who are they to 'call for' anything?

I don't doubt that many are very well-qualified in their fields, but they're a bunch of individuals who got together with others who share the same political agenda. Not 'independent' in the slightest.

SilverGlassHare · 15/12/2021 18:28

@Waxonwaxoff0

Independent Sage can get fucked.
Ahahahaha this is word for word what I just says to DH. I love you @Waxonwaxoff0

My grandma is 90 said the same but it’s easier to say if you’re older and lived a full and long life.

I'm fed up of being told to "Save The NHS". it's not my responsibility to "Save The NHS". It's our governments responsibility to "Save it" and not criminally under fund it for the past 2 decades.

It made me laugh at the start of the pandemic when they were encouraging retired NHS workers to come back. Here's a thing, try not taking them for granted and treating them like shit and they may not have left/retired in the first bloody place.

SilverGlassHare · 15/12/2021 18:28

just said* ffs autocorrect

IcedPurple · 15/12/2021 18:28

They’re not asking whether people would comply, that’s not their job

"Calling for" lockdowns isn't their 'job' either. They're just a self-appointed group with an agenda but no official role. Maybe they should just get on with their actual jobs that people are paying them to do.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/12/2021 18:29

@SilverGlassHare thank you! Grin

Dreamstate · 15/12/2021 18:30

If they are willing to pay my salary until I find a new job then yeah ill lockdown. Otherwise no, cos my company won't survive another lockdown.

Otherwise fuck off. I'm no longer willing to sacrifice living my life. I'm running out of years ro find a decent partner if I want a kid. I've already lost 2 yrs, meeting a guy has been incredibly difficult. More lockdowns and soon my opportunity to have my own child will be gone.

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 18:30

"Independent Sage" really can fuck right off.

I'm firmly of the opinion that anyone who supports such a thing is an absolute sociopath. They care not jot about anything other than "protecting the NHS" - not education, not the economy, not people's wellbeing, not people's fitness and mental health, not the safety of vulnerable women and children and older people....nothing. They're blind to all else.

Inastatus · 15/12/2021 18:30

@herecomesthsun

If we do lock down, experience suggests it will be at the last minute and too late to stop the worst of the damage...
Another lockdown will do the worst of the damage!
Frogsonglue · 15/12/2021 18:30

No thank you.

coldwarenigma · 15/12/2021 18:31

I reckon it will be from 4th January, traditionally the quiet time in hospitality once NY is over.

BarmyBrunhilde · 15/12/2021 18:31

Indie SAGE is very political. The were set up by Carole Cadwalldr and friends. I'm a bleeding heart lefty and voted Remain, but there is a curious overlap between the same sort of upper middle class People's Vote crowd, and those who are constantly calling for more lockdowns. Weird that it's become this sort of culture war.

HesterShaw1 · 15/12/2021 18:32

Absolutely this.

I'm done with "saving the NHS". If it wasn't in such a shit state and manifestly so unfit for purpose, it wouldn't need such regular "saving". Why can't there be an honest conversation about this?

CovidMakesThingsHarder · 15/12/2021 18:33

Genuine question?
But those against lockdown that think they do them for nothing, even if omicron is mild, but the amount of people hospitalised goes up as numbers do, what happens without a lockdown where you get to a point that so many healthcare staff are off sick, or there just aren’t enough beds. Then your child is in a car accident and an ambulance just doesn’t come, or your 40yr old friend has a heart attack and they can’t take them to treat the clot. That’s why it is, not for any other reason.

Popcornriver · 15/12/2021 18:33

Circuit breaker during Xmas holiday does sound like an ok compromise

Doesn't to me. I want to see family over the holiday and a lock down next week means no panto or Christmas party for DC. Although considering the booster is what? 1 to 2 weeks before protection kicks in? A circuit breaker after Christmas is a waste of time. With the way it's spreading, most will have caught it. So if one is needed I guess now would be the time to do it. I really, really can't see it though.

RobinPenguins · 15/12/2021 18:34

@Waxonwaxoff0

Independent Sage can get fucked.
Was about to say exactly this, word for word.
BluebellsGreenbells · 15/12/2021 18:34

But the lockdowns will happen by proxy anyway. When whole business needs to close or class groups because there’s no teachers etc -

If it gets much worse so many people will work from home so there’s the lunch trade etc, people are already pulling out of parties., so restaurants and clubs will close as no trade.

It’s not clear cut one or the other.

RoobyMyrtle · 15/12/2021 18:34

If the NHS was better funded there would be less chance of it being overwhelmed.

KilmordenCastle · 15/12/2021 18:35

@Waxonwaxoff0

Independent Sage can get fucked.
Absolutely this! There's not a chance in hell that I will stop seeing my friends and family again.
Againstmachine · 15/12/2021 18:35

"Calling for" lockdowns isn't their 'job' either. They're just a self-appointed group with an agenda but no official role.

Yep its not their job to make announcements about covid, they have given themselves a job. They shouldn't get any airtime at all they are just a bunch of disgruntled scientists.
