Independent sage: circuit breaker lockdown needed now

551 replies

XmasGoose · 15/12/2021 18:01

I see Independent Sage have said that an immediate circuit breaker lockdown is needed to protect the NHS.

This would involve a total ban on household mixing, all bars, restaurants and indoor venues closing and schools shutting early for Christmas.

Is this needed now to protect the NHS and save lives? Personally I wouldn’t comply with another lockdown.

Independent sage can stick their hysterical bed wetting fearmongering up their arses. I’m triple jabbed so I won’t be locked down again under any circumstances. They can’t arrest us all. They can’t imprison us all. And if they try, they will be playing with fire.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/12/2021 18:59

@celan @HesterShaw1 but lots of countries health systems are at breaking point too, not just our NHS. Are they all ‘not fit for purpose’ too?

rookiemere · 15/12/2021 19:01

@InkyPinkyParlezVous

I wouldn't like it, but honestly, if things are as bad as they are portraying I'm mystified as to why we aren't going into lockdown tomorrow.
Yes to this, don't get why if things are so catastrophic we aren't doing something already, not that I want that to happen.

@Waxonwaxoff0

Independent Sage can get fucked.
Xmas Grin Hell yeah!
IcedPurple · 15/12/2021 19:02

@frazzledali

They are also calling for adequate financial support but none of you seem to have actually read what they said?
I think I did miss the part where they detailed where the money for all this 'financial support' would come from.

So easy to 'call for' this and that when you have no responsibility for the outcome.

Happypootler · 15/12/2021 19:02

It is interesting to see the changing weight of opinion isn't it? And yes to needing an honest conversation about the NHS. It's totally broken, covid or not.

This would be a fair enough comment if their health systems didn't lurch from crisis to crisis even before the pandemic struck, which is what the dear old NHS does.

"Protect the NHS. Avoid using it "

Every potential lockdown people ranting ‘well, they can do what they want but I’m not complying this time’. Unfortunately you will have to ‘comply’ if everything is shut. Sadly.

EmKayEm · 15/12/2021 19:04

They can say what they like.
The chances of anyone complying with not seeing relatives, after the idiots at the top carried on regardless throughout the entire pandemic, are about as slim as they could be.
Neil Ferguson, the original Mr Lockdown, was caught shagging around.
Gove, the big lockdown advocate, has sacrificed a run at the top job and a marriage with what he got up to...
And Johnson...well...

Unsure33 · 15/12/2021 19:04

How do you prepare the nhs for a pandemic? Have thousands fully trained that won’t ever be needed again ? It’s not about equipment it’s staff .

Many other countries who allegedly have superior services also suffered through the pandemic.

We all pay for the nhs so vote for higher taxes .

Yes, we know that but we are saying we won't comply regarding no household mixing.

Well, we won’t be able to go shopping but we can carry on mixing with friends and family. And we will.

Of course you cant go to pub that is shut. When anyone says such things, it is almost always about being told to stop seeing family/friends in their own houses.
AnnieSnap · 15/12/2021 19:06

@CovidMakesThingsHarder

Genuine question? But those against lockdown that think they do them for nothing, even if omicron is mild, but the amount of people hospitalised goes up as numbers do, what happens without a lockdown where you get to a point that so many healthcare staff are off sick, or there just aren’t enough beds. Then your child is in a car accident and an ambulance just doesn’t come, or your 40yr old friend has a heart attack and they can’t take them to treat the clot. That’s why it is, not for any other reason.
☝️This. It’s an inconvenient truth though isn’t it?
Unsure33 · 15/12/2021 19:06

The government don’t want lockdown

No one wants lockdown

But unfortunately I don’t think people will use their common sense . Sadly

FrownedUpon · 15/12/2021 19:06

It probably is needed. I’ve also heard that hospitals expect to have no capacity for admissions in January. It’s really worrying.

Not strictly true. I don’t know about other places in the country but there was no shortage of hair dressers, salons and pubs operating by the back door where I live.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/12/2021 19:07

If (the NHS) wasn't in such a shit state and manifestly so unfit for purpose, it wouldn't need such regular "saving". Why can't there be an honest conversation about this?

Because it's politically very difficult, and politicians are hardly noted for their courage

That said, while there's at least something left of education, human interaction and the rest, functioning health care's on its last legs - and that applied even before Covid

So instead of constantly parroting "protect the NHS!!" perhaps we should be considering what we'd prefer to replace it (which I've believed to be the Tories' aim from the start, mainly because of the £££ to be made from the fire sale)

theworldsgonefeckingmad · 15/12/2021 19:08

@Mickarooni that is very true and I would 100% feel the same, if you are 90 you don't know how long you have so may aswell see the grandkids if you are comfortable with it. Maybe going forward we should let the vulnerable isolate and look after them financially while everyone else happy to can carry on as normal as possible and keep the economy going

I do. Every time.
SilverGlassHare · 15/12/2021 19:10

I find it hard to believe some people have such poor grasp on human nature.

People don’t think it’ll happen to them. People spend their lives performing risk assessments and cost benefit analyses for EVERYTHING they do. From driving to smoking to eating poorly to climbing on a rickety chair to get to a tall cupboard to using a babysitter to hoping if the NHS crashes and burns, they won’t be the one with the heart attack or their child with the seizure.

Trixiefirecracker · 15/12/2021 19:11

@AnnieSnap they’ll be all smug because even though Granny died due to lack of hospital care, they still secretly got to mix in their households and flip the bird at the government.
