Insofar as Team Vaccine are also Team Science, it is incumbent upon us to use data legitimately. Specifically we really shouldn't use irrelevant and misleading data about hospitalisations in January/February 2021 to produce an eye catching headline figure allegedly showing that almost everyone hospitalised is unvaccinated. So I'm disappointed in the Economist and glad FullFact have corrected them.
Yes it would be lovely if vaccines were 100% foolproof and all the data gave a very simple demonstration of how well they work. But they're not, they're "only" 90-something% effective against severe disease so we have to do a bit more statistical work on the denominators and the age bands to demonstrate the efficacy.
Ironically in countries where they didn't do such a rigorous job of prioritising the most vulnerable as the UK their vaccinations look at first glance like they're much more successful - but that's actually because they left more octogenarians unprotected.
