Getting through the winter

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/sep/10/boris-johnson-publish-covid-blueprint-difficult-winter

To be honest, I'd be really happy with any of this if it keeps the kids in school and we don't have to have any sort of lockdown again.

"Boris Johnson is set to publish a Covid blueprint to prepare for a “difficult time” this winter, with jabs for younger teenagers, a booster programme, flu shots and vaccine passports all expected to be part of the measures.

Johnson is likely to strike a more cautious note than he has done in recent months, warning the public to continue being careful as cases are rising – with more than 8,000 Covid patients in hospital in the UK despite the vaccination programme.

The government is looking to extend its emergency Covid powers – ... as a last resort.

No 10 is hoping the combination of measures to be announced next week will head off the need for further draconian lockdowns after some scientists warned that a “firebreak” could be needed this autumn."

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay The grin at the end of your post says much more about your motivations re your Covid stance than any of the words in your post do!

@Lockheart 👌🏼

What is it you think it says?

marieantoinehairnet · 11/09/2021 22:13

They need to accept masks do help, they need to mandate wfh of you can as god knows this helps massively, screw saving Pret, and they need to keep social distancing.... everything can stay open if we just be honest and sensible

lannistunut · 11/09/2021 22:32

The media are reporting masks and WFH will return, and hopefully no more hospitality closures. Can not see what is the point of delaying on things like masks.

Wholeheartedly agree, if it's a good idea in October, it's a bloody good idea now!
megletthesecond · 11/09/2021 22:41

Anything that means schools can pretty much safely stay open is a good idea. Vaccinate some teens and get the boosters started would be nice.

I'm shocked he's actually planning something for once tbh.

MercyBooth · 11/09/2021 23:52

If masks actually help...........explain Scotland.

MercyBooth · 12/09/2021 00:00

Right after the rich have had their holibobs AGAIN!

GoldenOmber · 12/09/2021 00:04

Yes you should absolutely bring back masks and WFH! That way you can be like us in Scotland, with covid cases that are… oh. Oh dear.

marieantoinehairnet · 12/09/2021 00:06

We can't help it if you lot are all out copulating, fighting and licking each other

GoldenOmber · 12/09/2021 00:11

Nah, our current national recreation is arguing about the legal definition of ‘nightclub’.

endlesscraziness · 12/09/2021 00:15

What's your tipping point? If critical care can no longer be offered to cancer surgery and it's decided at the front door whether you get critical care? If the hospitals are so overwhelmed that they have no beds and people are dying on ambulances, will that convince people to at least wear masks? Our hospital is at Nov 20 levels for general patients and January for ICU. If everyone were vaccinated we could probably scrape through, but 85% of our under 55 admissions are unvaccinated and 90% of ICU admissions are we can't cope with the inevitable breakthrough cases in the old vaccinated with such high levels of transmission.

Either you follow some rules. Or healthcare will crumble irrespective of your political or vaccine stance

MercyBooth · 12/09/2021 00:15

@GoldenOmber all you will get is more ignorant snobbery and ppl blaming other people for a virus doing what it does.

MercyBooth · 12/09/2021 00:16

At the moment im tackling the obesity epidemic by losing weight.

endlesscraziness · 12/09/2021 00:19

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss Masks and isolating households when there is a case would be easy to bring back. Allowing people to go to work, school etc from a household with covid with no compulsory testing seems madness.

This exactly. I can't help but feel if isolating and masks weren't scrapped we wouldn't be in the mess we are now. Household contacts can even still visit care homes. It's madness

endlesscraziness · 12/09/2021 00:23

@Lostinacloud we can't live with the virus unless more are vaccinated. Even the 3% unvaccinated in certain age groups are proportionately dominating inpatients beds. We can live with it if the NHS aren't overwhelmed. If the other 5 people in our ICU with Covid were vaccinated there'd be a slim chance 1 would be there. That's still 2 vs 6 or 20% occupied with COVID vs 50%

I think I’m more worried by the fact that he’s planning something.

If they’ve managed to make Boris worried enough to plan something then whatever’s getting thrown at us in the NHS this winter must be really bad.

Tinydancer321 · 12/09/2021 06:12

I’m really worried about this winter, esp as fly
Season is going to be bad 😢.
Also feel his letting it get out of control so it’s going to be hard, a new variant and we will be screwed I have no idea why he stopped house holds isolating. My only thought is this is to do with money. It’s madness though!

megletthesecond · 12/09/2021 09:26

Oh crikey Rafa 😱. I didn't think of it that way.

marieantoinehairnet · 12/09/2021 10:20

See they've just ditched vaccine passports, which were always a bonkers idea, but how can you spend all that time and energy on something then come out and says it's a crap idea - honestly they are completely and utterly inept

Dustyboots · 12/09/2021 10:24

Did they spend any time or money on vaccine passports? I thought it was all just hot air like most of the stuff they propose.

marieantoinehairnet · 12/09/2021 10:25

Of course they did, they have consultants earning big bucks coming up with this crap

Exactly. It's getting so tiresome that people conflate so many issues with covid.

Disgusting comment.
