Getting through the winter

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/sep/10/boris-johnson-publish-covid-blueprint-difficult-winter

To be honest, I'd be really happy with any of this if it keeps the kids in school and we don't have to have any sort of lockdown again.

"Boris Johnson is set to publish a Covid blueprint to prepare for a “difficult time” this winter, with jabs for younger teenagers, a booster programme, flu shots and vaccine passports all expected to be part of the measures.

Johnson is likely to strike a more cautious note than he has done in recent months, warning the public to continue being careful as cases are rising – with more than 8,000 Covid patients in hospital in the UK despite the vaccination programme.

The government is looking to extend its emergency Covid powers – ... as a last resort.

No 10 is hoping the combination of measures to be announced next week will head off the need for further draconian lockdowns after some scientists warned that a “firebreak” could be needed this autumn."

Going to enjoy the autumn first and take it one step at a time!

Times article discussing waning immunity/ 6m unvaccinated /flu season

(and also some strategies to navigate this)

I started the thread as I thought that it was a really good thing (and very positive) they were putting together some sensible strategies; but I see your point about it only just being autumn!

Oh lovely another doom mongering thread. We're only in the second week of September, could we just enjoy Autumn please first before you start with your tabloid spam and predictions.

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 21:49

not my predictions

Oh ffs goal posts moved again willing to take the risk now fed up with scared of living afraid of dying !

flumposie · 10/09/2021 22:14

I will be utterly pissed off if I am able to teach my classes for the next 7 weeks ( which I really want to do) but then at half term the concert that's been postponed 4 times already doesn't go ahead due to a 'firebreak' . I'm sick of double standards now.

illuyankas · 10/09/2021 22:17

I think it's better prepared than do nothing. Hopefully vaccinating 12+ go ahead, as well as mass flu vaccination of children help winter being less chaotic.

Please stop going on about vaccinating children you are obsessed with it on every covid thread.

This messaging from universities that it's safe to gather in large classrooms but not at parties is clearly not landing very well.

I think people are generally very tired of being told that the pandemic is over when it comes to labor but ongoing when it comes to leisure.

"think people are generally very tired of being told that the pandemic is over when it comes to labor but ongoing when it comes to leisure"

Very good point. Yes, you can work but do not enjoy anything.

MercyBooth · 10/09/2021 23:00

DM has been deteriorating since February. I will NOT be complying with a winter lockdown.

The NHS is hiring 42 new chief executives on up to £270,000 pay, raising concerns over how the new health and social care tax is being spent.

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 23:03

@MercyBooth

Well, all this is about the government, looking at alternatives to a winter lockdown, you'll be pleased to hear Smile

I Can Not Deal With More Psychological Abuse.

Government and NHS...............its time for you to choose. Either i
a. worry about myself by tackling the obesity epidemic by continuing to lose weight on the healthy eating plan i just started last month which is much easier to do with more normality around me.

OR I worry about Covid pandemic and 67 million strangers by struggling to wear a mask aggravating a skin condition and whatever other ridiculousness they bring back in. And turning to food to cope is why im losing weight now.

Its decision time for the power mad.
Because i havent got the mental strength to do both. So weight loss or Covid folks. Time to choose.

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 23:20

If wearing a mask aggravates a skin condition then it's quite reasonable not to wear one don't you think?

& well done re the healthy eating plan, it sounds like that's a winner

Honestly he can say what he likes! No one I know is prepared to go backwards now! Alot of people are now really pissed off with the NI increase and that should make them aware that any further restrictions will push that higher quicker?! As I have said in another thread that any more restrictions might ease pressure on the NHS this winter, but going forward the cost is going to be the privatisation of it! If that's what people want then restrictions are definitely the way to go! Proven already in my area! But what really concerns me as someone who lives in an area with mostly elderly people is the fact that the enforcement of vaccines is making our care facilities unviable! 2 carers walked out midshift!! I have people stuck in hospital that can't come home as we have no home carers!! It's very concerning in my area as the care home staff are now having to pick who to basically allow out of bed!! A balance will soon have to be met! And masks won't cut it neither will sd and another lockdown will kill them!

MercyBooth · 10/09/2021 23:48

Hear hear @Wishfulthinking1977 lockdowns and restrictions must not become the default setting.
2 carers walked out midshift? Shit

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 23:50

boosters for example wouldn't be restrictions and might help a lot (some really good news about them just out, it looks as though they will really increase immunity a lot)

I think the aim would be to find measures that help the situation that are as little restrictive as possible.

OP posts:
Wishfulthinking1977 · 10/09/2021 23:54

@MercyBooth yes! Was told by a home carer on Wednesday! I was shocked! They left 4 residents unable to even be showered! No bank staff to call on! The elderly are going to be the ones to suffer which is not the fault and awful! But if you start telling people how to live their lives?! Such a shame 😞

MercyBooth · 11/09/2021 00:02

@Wishfulthinking1977 Well certain people wouldnt be told so they are going to learn the hard way!!!

katesbushh · 11/09/2021 00:05

Moving the goalposts???

It is a fucking pandemic.
Despite not being a fan of BJ, he does not have a crystal ball.

It was said at the VERY beginning that the rolling lockdowns might have to happen.

But moving the goalposts. Come on.
Can the MN collective be more imaginative than that.

Ugzbugz · 11/09/2021 00:14

So if face masks work why do shops, etc need to shut, all wear masks and them open?

MercyBooth · 11/09/2021 00:17

And if the face is so dangerous why oh why were men getting their nose hairs plucked at the barbers in the summer of last year while beauty salons remained closed so women with facial hair couldnt get the same service. I wont forgive and forget the misogyny.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/09/2021 00:43

A balance will soon have to be met! And masks won't cut it neither will sd and another lockdown will kill them!

Getting a jab will cut it though. Last figure I can find is that 78% of care workers had had at least 1 covid jab and that was before the government announced making it mandatory. I'd expect that number to have risen over the last 2 months and rise again before November.

It may well be a factor in the shortage of care staff at the moment, but I'd think that poor wages and staffing issues being felt across a number of sectors in the UK are more pressing.
