I love this, all the "I won't" , " they can't make me" and "I've had enough". How are people planning not to WFH if the goverment makes it law again ? We are 18 months in none of us gets to decide none of us can control the spread and restrictions may be necessary again

Easily. By still going in to the office. The same way I have done since the end of lockdown 1. My DH has done and will do the same.

Whilst no one wants a lockdown, this is just for show because he'd win any vote required to reintroduce these powers anyway.

Quartz2208 · 12/09/2021 08:56

@lannistunut I am not sure that is true, he might win it but it would be at a huge political cost to him and he knows it
He wants to be Prime Minister for years standing in his way isn’t necessarily the public but his own party and a faction for whom it would need a vaccine resistant variant so potent in order to vote for it
He is repealing those parts for them - it is actually a fairly big political statement

notgotthehelp · 12/09/2021 09:04

@lannistunut would he really win it? You are very negative.

No but I get to decide if I stay at my job or not. If you read all of my post I'll be considering handing in my notice. DH told me to do it last winter but I held on. I don't know if I could do it again.

Warhertisuff · 12/09/2021 09:41

@NannyAndJohn

I do have to say I got the heebie jeebies watching the Proms and the tennis tonight.

No SD, hardly any masks.

We all saw what happened with the Euros.

It looks like you think this was a one-off... There have been dozens, probably hundreds, of similar large packed events since then.... and we're still well below 100,000 cases!
borntobequiet · 12/09/2021 10:19

Germany but - booster shots for adults and vaccines for young children

booster shots and vaccines

SonnetForSpring · 12/09/2021 10:25

@Justrealised

Sky news are reporting that parts of the coronavirus act are being repealed. The parts that relate to shutting the economy, shutting schools and restrictions on gatherings and events. Surely this is good news and means further lockdowns and school closures aren’t on the radar.
Apparently they can still do those things under the public health act.
notgotthehelp · 12/09/2021 10:34

@SonnetForSpring please can you link?

Quartz2208 · 12/09/2021 10:54

It is in the same article @notgotthehelp the Public Health Act 1984 has contained those powers for years

www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainers/emergency-powers

Sets out the differences and why the Coronavirus Act was needed and what has been pushed through the Coronavirus Act and what happens.

Repealing those sections makes it a lot harder to do so

lannistunut · 12/09/2021 11:12
@lannistunut would he really win it? You are very negative.
Yes he would win it, because if the public perceive a need, his popularity will fall if he continues down what they view as the 'wrong' path. Just like every other lockdown we've had. The public got there ahead of Johnson.

Voters are fickle, a week is a long time in politics, all that.

I'm not negative, just think it is naive in the extreme to think a) Johnson ever means what he says and b) anyone knows where we'll be by January.

VanGoSunflowers · 12/09/2021 11:41

I genuinely think that the more lockdowns there are the less people will comply. The less people comply, the more socially acceptable it is to break the rules. For me, it went like this:

Lockdown 1: Hysterical about how we must all comply. Stupidly believed that the more that we stuck to the rules, the quicker it would be over

Lockdown 2: Wavered massively but decided to carry on seeing a friend, at the bottom of her garden and socially distanced. Would sneak in.

Lockdown 3: Saw a couple of friends, still covert but not overly so. Hugged them.

Lockdown eleventy: Fuck it. Don’t care. Don’t watch the news, do whatever the fuck you want.

Quartz2208 · 12/09/2021 11:55

I think though @lannistunut you are forgetting the the popularity within the tory party is actually just if not more important and there is also an element who do not want any more lockdowns - there is internal battle between him and Rishi Sunak that he wont want to push unless he has to

Johnson NEVER means what he says he follows what he thinks he should say to get himself where he wants to be. And I think he feels he can spin it to the public far more than he can to his own party

Dghgcotcitc · 12/09/2021 12:27

I think pro lockdowners do need to realise that the public support for the March 2020 lockdown doesn’t mean public support on going. Much that support cane from the narrative it was an “emergency measure” yes I understand it now all “silly old public didn’t they realise when we said do you support a lockdown now we actually meant do you support a rolling program of lockdown for ever” but yes the public were so silly that large numbers of them didn’t get that and no I think there is some misremembering going on as to how clear that was made.

You need to do some serious pr to sell the rolling lockdown idea it just isn’t the same as an emergency measure at all! Unless you can point to evidence of public support to do that (and no oh look they support extra restrictions they must support rolling lockdowns because that isn’t actually the same question!) then no Boris will not do it because it’s popular with the public.

I actually don’t think it is anywhere near as popular with the public as your average pro lockdowners think and will need to evidence to convince me other..I think boris will be the same!

notgotthehelp · 12/09/2021 12:32

@Dghgcotcitc according to some on here we'll be 'calling out' for one soon - demanding they put us into a lockdown rather than you know, make your own decision on the risk you feel comfortable with.

I agree and probably quite typical in that I thought first should happen (probably acted before it did happen as many did) but now the situation has changed, and so have attitudes.

I’m glad about the repealing the other stuff planned I’m ok with, always was on fence re passes

I'm not forgetting that @quartz2208 - but if public opinion moves, that wing of the party will get twitchy too. Ultimately, the public remain in charge.

I think the public will not call for full lockdown - we really shouldn't need one - but the reality of 50k deaths would also be politically damaging.

JBlow · 12/09/2021 16:04

I think if there is an emerging new variant and the NHS becomes overwhelmed with covid and flu patients then yes l, we will be incarcerated again

alreadytaken · 12/09/2021 20:30

If you want to avoid a lockdown get vaccinated and carry on with mask wearing. NHS waiting lists are rising and will go on rising. When you cant get treated in a&e and your relatives are waiting over a year for treatment or you cant work while you wait a year fror treatment will you still be saying no to lockdwn? Even if you are healthy waiting lists mean fewer lorry drivers and all those other staff shortages businesses are complaining about, because sick people are not in work.

Dont think private treatment is a get out of jail free card, it relies on the NHS for intensive care and that will be full of more urgent cases. There are over 1000 beds being used for covid cases.

The NHS cant cope with a bad flu year and covid, mask wearing will help keep other winter pressures down.
