It's not "business as usual" of course, but it can't be can it? It's not business as usual for anybody.

If you're sufficiently privileged and are happy for other people to take the risks of keeping society functioning and bringing you whatever you want, it can get pretty close. That matters a lot when it comes to lockdown discourse, because some people are shouldering much more of the burden than others.

Quartz2208 · 08/09/2021 08:01

@lannistunut

I do not think we should have closures but I do not think we can sustain unmitigated 'normal' life either heading into winter because the hospitalisations and deaths are getting to levels now where we will a) have problematic impacts on healthcare for a sustained period and b) people will start restricting their activities anyway which brings economic problems for businesses.
I agree - I think the difficulty then becomes what works whilst giving us enough normal life for it to be a longer term measure and for whom the costs of it are not that high.

Looking at other countries I think would be useful then - seeing what happens in other countires

lannistunut · 08/09/2021 08:02

@Whatever9999

We already have high hospitalisations and deaths, it was over 200 deaths yesterday and English school reopenings are not yet coming to bear on the numbers.

I can't believe this still needs to be said but, no there weren't 200 deaths yesterday. There were 200 reported yesterday, but many of those relate to days, weeks and months ago and even occasionally from the very start of the pandemic over a year ago. Deaths within 28 days of a positive test in England is currently standing at around 70/day.

No I'm not minimising, I'm simply stating that the headline number is not the whole story. Personally I think they need to stop reporting in this way and maybe should start reporting the weekly number (possibly with the 5 day lag, so the vast majority of deaths are included in that number)

Yes this is understood re reporting Hmm but the flip side of what you are posting is that cases were not actually as low as we thought on previous dates.

We report deaths in the way we report deaths - the UK is not double counting deaths so the total is what the total is.

If you report x a week I don't see how that is better than a daily figure.

lovescats3 · 08/09/2021 08:51

What about people with cancer who need treatment- we can't breach NHS resources

lovescats3 · 08/09/2021 08:54

Mask wearing in shops should have been kept. It's mandatory on the tube and lots of people aren't wearing them- either they are sick of it or have let their guard down. The Public Health messaging needed to be clearer

lovescats3 · 08/09/2021 09:04

NHS was underfunded pre- pandemic, that needs addressing now.We need more hospitals and staff- that would also stop lockdowns.Covid is endemic sadly and not going away.People need to get vaccinated to reduce mortality and vaccine passports or tests for restaurants etc like other countries should be introduced to reduce spread along with masks in shops.Kids need to be in schools and unis .We need to get on with living with it in this way because we have no choice.

rookiemere · 08/09/2021 09:06

@lovescats3 keeping masks has not kept the Scottish numbers down.

We don't know what they would have been without masks though.

@FallingRussetLeaves
It does speak volumes that you're only mentioning certain vulnerable groups here, too. CEV households deserve protection, nothing about those where there's DV. Telling.

I'm mentioning those groups as they are consistently those who have been overlooked in so many of our services, provisions and plans during this pandemic. This continues to be the case. There are today 3 or 4 news articles all referring to discrimination within the disabled being able to access the arts, education, head teachers choosing to slash SEN budgets etc. The excuse of Covid is being inexcusably bandied about as an excuse to fail and entire sector of society and families just like ours are at breaking point. But hey "we are living with it " so yaaayyy what a time to be alive.
That's not to say DV victims are any less important, as stated in my previous posts yesterday, where I 100% did refer to their plight in lockdown, this is actually an issue very close to my heart so not one I'm unaware of. But again- you assume. Quite what about any of this you find "telling" is baffling but then your ability to confidently hold a differing view appears to be the main challenge here.

FallingRussetLeaves · 08/09/2021 11:20

DV victims have been grossly overlooked during the pandemic. So it is and remains telling that you chose not to list them when discussing vulnerable groups, and had to be prompted to acknowledge them. If they're close to your heart, it can't be ignorance of their situation that led you not to mention them....

Great we agree. EVERYBODY warrants the right to safety and protection , even those invisible to us . Any and all plans, provisions, funding what have you need to be inclusive for all. That's surely what a civilised society aims towards? Quite why you need me to list every vulnerable sector of society though? I care deeply about those in care homes, those CEV not receiving medical procedures yet you've failed to mention them.... Are we in discussion here or competition? This thread is about the potential and wisdom of further lockdowns - the never ending list of those overlooked is surely why this requires discussion no?
Horst · 08/09/2021 12:24

Third day back in primary and there is a positive case somewhere but don’t worry it’s ok test and trace will contact you maybe…. Pcr ASAP but if negative come back in, even though it wouldn’t actually pick it up yet from only being a contact 1-2 days ago.

Yummypancake · 08/09/2021 12:26

My kids currently have Covid and test and trace said they now consider children playing together, sharing car etc low risk. So only need the names of children he had sleepover with (there weren’t any). So no close contacts traced

Horst · 08/09/2021 12:42

Makes even less sense.

So surely that should be for all positive then child or adult. Nobody at work should ever be sent home unless they have a sleep over or live together

Yummypancake · 08/09/2021 13:01

Yes I was amazed. All his close friends at school just get the same warning letter as everyone else to look out for symptoms

Mumtwoboys90 · 08/09/2021 13:11

i think large weddings and nightclubs festivals will be shut down again but schools shops etc will be fine

notgotthehelp · 08/09/2021 13:17

@Mumtwoboys90 noooo! I have my rescheduled wedding at Christmas Shock

Yummypancake · 08/09/2021 13:32

Maybe cafes and restaurants will go to takeaway only? Usually the first thing they like to do is tell us we aren’t allowed in each other’s houses. But that’s going to be difficult to convince people to do this time I think

PileOfBooks · 08/09/2021 13:34

I actually doubt our school would metion it if there was a case (do they have to?)

They have however sent out a letter telling us the kids need to be in BY LAW even if the whole family is half-dead with covid and they're just waiting to get it...

AlecTrevelyan006 · 08/09/2021 13:37

If any business is forced to close the. The government will have to reintroduce some form of furlough - but there isn’t any indication that they want, or can afford, to do so.

2389Champ · 08/09/2021 13:56

Haven’t we lost sight of the point of lockdowns?

Their purpose wasn’t to stop Covid or even control it - just to spread the burden on the NHS. The government isn’t bothered how many get it or even die of it, providing the NHS doesn’t become overwhelmed which isn’t looking likely at the moment.

Those that are saying bugger the economy, lives are more important, are delusional. The health of the economy reflects the health of the nation. If our economy collapses, so does our health service, standard of living and life expectancy. Without working adults contributing, the essential services would soon run out of money and we’d be in an even worse situation.

Denmark has successfully used Covid passes for the last 6 months. They have worked so well and had sufficient effect on numbers that the passes are being phased out at the end of this month and a return to normality.

Villanelle17 · 08/09/2021 17:51

Nope, just maybe some restrictions.

AchillesLastStand · 08/09/2021 19:09

Watching Channel 4 news now. They are reporting that 90% of people in hospital are unvaccinated or have only received one vaccine recently. I know some people can’t have the vaccine for medical reasons, but it’s unacceptable to have another lockdown and close schools again to protect people who have simply chosen not to have the vaccine. If that’s the case this will never end.

MercyBooth · 08/09/2021 19:28

@AchillesLastStand My second one is due in October (around the 5th) i couldnt have the AZ so had to wait and had the Moderna
I dont own a Tardis Hmm

That’s fine, I’m not blaming you at all. I’m angry at people who are resistant to having any vaccine when we know they reduce reduce your chances of being seriously ill. There seems to a lot men of a certain age which think they’re invincible because they never usually get ill. We will all have to pay the price for their lifestyle choices come the winter.

Good luck for you second vaccine which is just around the corner now.
