Well that's it then. We have to cancel our holidaySad. This year feels like I have been cursed. I've had two eye operations to stop me going blind, and now this.

DH & I have been doubly vaccinated but the DC are too young.

Aaaaaarrrrggghhh Angry

I’m surprised by so many comments with people who don’t care anymore
If you want to go on holiday and don’t want to risk being pinged - isolate as much as you can beforehand - surely you can go a week without going to a cafe/restaurant or even to the shops if your holiday means that much to you.
I know someone was pinged, went for a test with no symptoms just to be sure but didn’t tell anyone and infected a vulnerable person who is double jabbed and now very poorly
I get the risk is low but it’s still a risk to somebody else’s life
I know people don’t like it and it’s shit but after a colleague died in their twenties who was fit and well I wouldn’t personally take the risk

Chris08 · 06/08/2021 19:24

Think most have deleted the ping now. If you feel ok just go on holiday

Disneycharacter · 06/08/2021 19:35

Book a PCR test for yourself 48 hours before you travel. If its negative just go.

Getskinnyordietrying · 06/08/2021 19:36

I was pinged through the app - my phone hadn’t left the house for over a month….turns out…. Next door but one had tested positive…. It’s days until the double jabbed don’t need to isolate. If your mental health with suffer … I say test and go

OverweightPidgeon · 06/08/2021 19:41

The app is useless. I was told by someone from track and trace that it can be activated by someone walking past your house. He told me to delete the app.

GreenTortoise · 06/08/2021 19:42

I deleted the app ages ago.

I only really go to supermarkets and if you think they're pinging me to isolate from there that's like a needle in a haystack. No way.

LoisLane66 · 06/08/2021 19:45

I haven't been jabbed, do always have a box of LFTs at home if going out out with friends but not where there are crowds. I do wear a mask on PT or in shops and always hand washing.
I'm absolutely fine. I had Sars - C2 back in 2019/20 and later antibody test came back positive but immunity wouldn't have lasted until now. It's just being sensible and luck I suppose.

Just as a bit of background, those who live in holiday areas are worried, not coz we don’t like visitors, but because the NHS in Devon and Cornwall are stretched to breaking point. Last week they had 40 ambulances queuing outside the hospital in Plymouth and were diverting emergencies to Bristol (two hours away). Plymouth is a very large university hospital, with one of the region’s only major incident centres.
Torquay is also under extreme pressure at the moment and hasn’t been doing elective surgery other than major cancer surgery for some weeks.

Sometimes it feels like I’m working in a weird parallel universe where the challenges the NHS faces have been forgotten because we aren’t talking about the 595 Covid deaths in the last 7 days, but focussing instead on the pingdemic (which is caused by, strangely, high Covid infection rates. Honestly, who could have expected that?!?)

Anyway. I’ll stop ranting. It’s probably not what people on this thread want to hear. But I’m really worried (you can probably tell) & tired out by the pandemic. Apologies if I’ve derailed. Just wanted to give a bit of background.

roarfeckingroarr · 06/08/2021 19:50

100% delete and go

igelkott2021 · 06/08/2021 19:55

The NHS is stretched to breaking point everywhere. It's not isolated to areas where people like to go on holiday (or where there are large numbers of elderly). The likes of Torbay hospital has no more covid cases than anywhere else (and they are doing elective procedures and carrying out routine appointments - I have a relative locally).

I deleted the covid app on 19th July, when restrictions ended, although I didn't have the contact tracing switched on anyway and only used it to check in. But if I did, I'd take a view on where I apparently had the contact. So for example if it said the hairdresser I might take it more seriously (eg today I went for a hair cut and there was a stupid woman talking really loudly and taking her mask down to talk) than if I was in my local supermarket buying a pint (litre) of milk for 30 seconds.

igelkott2021 · 06/08/2021 19:55

not coz we don’t like visitors

and we know from last year that the people in Cornwall categorically do not like visitors. but tolerate them to get money. Lets not pretend otherwise.

F107 · 06/08/2021 19:56

My husband, who's been double jabbed, tested positive for covid today. He went on a stag do at the weekend and has been showing symptoms for days, not only this he's looked and felt like absolute shit.

Like the 4 others who have now tested positive for covid since the stag their lateral flow tests came back negative for the first few days they were showing symptoms.

Although I'm also double jabbed I now look and feel like crap too. Did one lateral flow test yesterday and 3 today that all show negative. I've no doubt I'll eventually test positive in the next few days.

I'd isolate and reschedule the holiday.

AnnieSnap · 06/08/2021 19:57

@Doublestar

Only on MN are people actually still taking any notice of this crap. Everybody, including the government, knows the track and trace was never fit for purpose. I don't even know anyone in RL who has ever downloaded the app - or given their real details when going into a cafe/restaurant etc.

Use some critical thinking - are you capable of independent thought? Would you honestly cancel a holiday because a (very inconsistent) app has told you to isolate when you have no idea where/who you could've caught covid from? Or if you even have it/will develop it?

The elderly are vaccinated, lots of people are walking around symptomless and spreading it anyway. It doesn't really matter though because people are not generally getting very ill or dying from it anymore. The government have ditched masks and removed nearly all rules - they are practically saying to us "go on, go spread it around - we need to reach herd immunity before the winter".

If you would cancel your holiday and disappoint your family, more fool you OP.

Wow! What do you get out of being such an unnecessarily unpleasant arse? 🤷‍♀️
DingDongThongs · 06/08/2021 20:01

@TheWindOnTheMoon

Cannot think where at all. I haven't been anywhere other than the supermarket to do shopping and a café.

It was the app not track & trace. DH thinks turn app off, turn phone off & just go on holiday. But I'm thinking what if I really have got it & spread it around. I'd never forgive myself. DH & DS are both asthmatic. It's a nightmare.

When I had Covid, I overused my qvar. I doubt I'd still be here without it and hot toddies.
DingDongThongs · 06/08/2021 20:01

@musicalfrog

I couldn't cancel a holiday for this.

OP the vulnerable are vaccinated. Just go.

Children aren't.
Lovemusic33 · 06/08/2021 20:03

I would delete the app and go. In fact I deleted the app a couple weeks ago as I didn’t want to get pinged before we went away….or any time during the summer holidays.

I’m extra careful and rarely get within a few ft of anyone, of course if someone in my household came down with it I would isolate but I’m done with the app and how sensitive it is.

Go and enjoy your holiday.

StripyHorse · 06/08/2021 20:03

@goldfinchfan

This is why people living in Holiday places are NOT so thrilled with the high numbers of holidaymakers invading this year.

You do not give a stuff about spreading this pandemic/plague.

Medical resources are low in rural areas.
The hospitals are over full and can barely cope.

So if you do feel ill go home.

Exactly this!
maddiemookins16mum · 06/08/2021 20:13

Half our office were ‘pinged’ today…nightmare for next week’s rota.
Roll on the 16th.

Willowandrose · 06/08/2021 20:15

Just go. Put it out of your mind. No one will know a thing.

Snortlepig · 06/08/2021 20:17

@musicalfrog no they aren’t, my ten year old child is vulnerable (an 11 year old with her condition died of covid last year, so not insignificant). It’s more complex than that.

WutheringBites · 06/08/2021 20:21

I’m pleased you have a relative down here. I work for the hospital, but what would I know? We currently have one of the highest rates of Covid in England. And that’s not the root of the problem; we have summer pressures on top of our winter pressures normally - with no extra funding for the incoming population. It’s complex.
DingDongThongs · 06/08/2021 20:23

Half our office were ‘pinged’ today…nightmare for next week’s rota. Roll on the 16th.
Not good.
DingDongThongs · 06/08/2021 20:24

@Willowandrose

Selfish and dangerous.
Dfdsdfds · 06/08/2021 20:25

I am old and vulnerable, double jabbed, mask up everywhere, don’t attend crowded places and so won’t be travelling abroad this year.

Thing is we all know the risks, and we can only use our judgement to live our lives as best we can in the face of COVID.

So I echo what others say - delete the app, take a lat flow test, fingers crossed & enjoy your family holiday.
