Well that's it then. We have to cancel our holidaySad. This year feels like I have been cursed. I've had two eye operations to stop me going blind, and now this.

DH & I have been doubly vaccinated but the DC are too young.

Aaaaaarrrrggghhh Angry

That’s why I’ve postponed my overseas holiday until next year. We’re double jabbed, but still.., I have dodgy immune system (only slightly) and it’s too easy to fake fit to fly IMO on the way back from amber country.
I know several double jabbed who have tested positive and some of them have had nasty symptoms. I would say if several lateral flow tests are negative then you’re probably ok to ho anyway, but personally I’m not risking it this year Hmm.

BluebellsGreenbells · 06/08/2021 20:33

I’m pleased you have a relative down here. I work for the hospital, but what would I know?

What’s your % of holiday makers v local hospital admissions?

Frazzled2207 · 06/08/2021 20:39

Definitely go on holiday. Take a box of LTFs with you, do them every couple of days, try and out them out of your mind and have a good time.

That’s a good question: and I don’t know the answer. The problem is that for Covid most younger ppl get really sick at about day 10 (cytokine storm), so visitors will probably have gone home by then. The worry is that something else (non Covid) makes you unwell enough to need hospital, like a car crash or MI. I genuinely do worry about it (I know I’ll get a roasting on here); wakes me up at 3am both worrying for my own family & for my patients. Sad
ConfusedCarrie · 06/08/2021 20:47

Covid is here and it's not going anywhere soon. We just have to learn to live with it.
OP, enjoy your holiday Flowers

Can’t believe how many of you are so socially irresponsible! My son got sent home from school three days before he broke up for summer his whole year 6 did, so no last two days at primary school for them, no goodbyes, no school trip. We had to isolate which of course we did then he tested positive 5 days later so isolation started again. Four days after that my husband tested positive I have remained negative but we still have to isolate till Monday. Track and trace are all over us checking frequently with us by land line. Our holiday has gone up in smoke too and we have had a horrendous year - and we will literally have two days of our leave left after isolation. But by sticking to the rules it means the virus will die in our household and will not be spread around! By going abroad you may end up testing positive when you land in the airport, 10 days in a hotel room when it’s 40 outside is not my idea of fun.
My son hadn’t mixed with the child in his class that tested positive - but it proves he DID catch it AND passed it on. Think carefully

Tomasinabombadil · 06/08/2021 21:10

I was pinged on the App & advised to isolate for 10 days nearly 4 weeks ago.
I knew it was absolutely INCORRECT because I’m retired and I live on my own in a semi rural area, don’t go into a supermarket or anywhere else, use click & collect every 2 weeks have done so for nearly 3 years, I don’t meet anyone at all other than see & wave at other dog walkers across the road or in the fields around the village.
Chatting to an IT friend on WhatsApp, he said that when your phone is Bluetooth connected it can pick up a signal from at little at 30 feet away so effectively through the walls of your house.
That made perfect sense to me I live in a small terraced cottage and my neighbours who are usually out & about all the time, didn’t go anywhere for nearly 2 weeks, their car was parked on their drive for all that time. I believe that they had probably been told to isolate.
I deleted the App & reinstalled it the next day, it just went to back to green & when I drilled down it said no information recorded, ie., the red pinging was definitely wrong for me.😵
Makes me wonder how many people were/are being pinged in error.🙄

Tomasinabombadil · 06/08/2021 21:13

Btw... I’ve deleted the App now, never really needed it in the first place.🙄

But that is school and sounds like a known contact not some silly app that could be pinging through a wall or someone you pass in a supermarket.
Brondie319 · 06/08/2021 21:39

Are you insane?!? Delete the #£&%ing app??

But that’s the point you DONT know! the parents at school were like well I’m ok, my kids not been near the kid that had it so I’m alright. My son hadn’t been near him either but he obviously had because he caught it. I thought the app pinged you if you had prolonged contact not a passing contact?

Blueskybird · 06/08/2021 21:45

@Brondie319 and you are uneducated and rude

SofiaMichelle · 06/08/2021 21:48

Chatting to an IT friend on WhatsApp, he said that when your phone is Bluetooth connected it can pick up a signal from at little at 30 feet away so effectively through the walls of your house.

It's not just a case of whether another phone is in Bluetooth range.

There's a lot of complexity around strength of the signal at various sampling intervals to determine an approximate range. It's definitely not perfect but it's not as simple as some people like to make out.

The chances of being 'pinged' because someone walked past your house or because a neighbour's stair case is adjacent to yours are vanishingly small.

@maddiemookins16mum

Half our office were ‘pinged’ today…nightmare for next week’s rota. Roll on the 16th.
I find it hard to believe that half your office is actively using the app!
emmadenning · 06/08/2021 22:25

If you have been contacted then stay at home. My mother and father isolated for over 12 months, are both now double vaccinated and yet my dad is now in hospital fighting for his life with Covid. Do what is right, it is only a holiday. You may have this terrible disease, that's why you have been contacted. Be responsible and think of who you could ultimately give this disease too if you have if x Every day is a living hell for my family at the moment and I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone x

User67543989 · 06/08/2021 22:31

You have to stay at home if you are contacted, OP wasn't contacted just ping by the app

emmadenning · 06/08/2021 22:36

Everyone needs to be responsible otherwise this is never going to end. Its simple, if you are contacted do the right thing, stay indoors, self isolate until you know you are not infectious. Stop being so bloody selfish and worrying about a holiday and a bit of sunshine. People are still dying! Why are you even questioning this???

User67543989 · 06/08/2021 22:37

It isn't going to end anyway though, that's why we are living with it

Exactly. In a week's time, if you're double vaxxed you won't need to isolate after a ping anyway. Things are moving towards living with Covid, not hiding from it.

As I said before, I've followed all the rules carefully since March 2020. But at this point, I would not cancel a UK holiday for a ping from the app. I'm exhausted, my DDs and their partners are teachers and nurses and they desperately need the holidays we've planned. They use the app, and I dream of sneakily turning off their Bluetooth to save them from a ping.

emmadenning · 06/08/2021 22:46

Tell me that again when you have a loved one fighting for their life!!

BluebellsGreenbells · 06/08/2021 22:47

WutheringBites

I also live in a holiday hotspot

There are 20 beds plus 8 in ICU

19 and 4 are already taken -

It’s not like my home city where the hospitals are huge and there’s several close by if needed.

This is it!

user1478939671 · 06/08/2021 22:48

Plus... and you're not going to appreciate this right now if you're stressed out but you've had 2 operations to stop you going blind and you're not blind. There's tons of people who couldn't have those operations in time or at all. But like I say... give it a year or so.
