@1dayatatime even those figures seem high. Was that flu only or flu and Pneumonia?

@Backofbeyond50

Both the Covid and flu viruses generally do not kill people but more often weaken the hosts immune system to allow other secondary infection such a pneumonia, sepsis etc that does kill the host.

In other cases the host's immune system does too strong a job and your body effectively kills itself.

The source for the figures I quoted are originally from Office of National Statistics:

www.ageuk.org.uk/lambeth/about-us/news/articles/2017/rise-in-excess-deaths-for-elderly-last-winter-likely-due-to-flu/#

The reason the flu figures seem surprisingly high is that flu deaths have been around for a long time and is not a new scary disease like Covid, as a result flu does not get the media, Government, social media panic that Covid has.

Of course this is largely irrelevant to a bereaved family where what matters is the loss of a loved one and not whether they died of Covid, flu or cancer or whatever.
