@Blessex not yet, the figures where I work are getting higher by the day 😳
It’s been brought to my attention today that people have covid in our local area and are off sick from work and have been going to sit in the local pub, which last week loads of people caught it after the football had been on. I’m disgusted, I’m all for us trying to go back to normal but people still need to act responsible, just cause one person isn’t going to get a severe case, the next person could die, boris will be telling us we’re in lockdown again before we know if

PHE have now updated their risk profile of Delta... what a surprise! its now 50% more likely to reinfect a person than the Alpha (kent) variant.

Totaly get thats from a low risk in the first place but yet again shows the need the caution.

Having said all that, went to the pub yesterday, few wore masks (inc me) and it was nice to go to the bar and order drinks, the atmosphere was almost pre CV..... and very relaxing too - then again, the place had few punters, a lovely evening to sit outside too.

Mid December and packed bar... i'd stay home.

Herd immunity won't be possible, will it?

The extent to which this matters depends on what the Alpha rate of reinfection was.

If it was 1%, then 1.5% won't really make a difference in terms of virus spread. If it
was 30%, but now 45%, it might.

Rolling lockdowns interspersed with slight relaxations for eternity then presumably?

herecomesthsun · 24/07/2021 04:02

went to Tesco's yesterday (90% wearing masks) and Waitrose today (every adult wearing masks except a large, gammony, entitled looking man, of course he might have a valid reason not to though).

It occurred to me anew just how unfair it would be on the staff, some of whom are older, to be stuck there all day, with people disregarding masks/ social distancing etc.

Also, the non-mask wearers tend to be men. Would you expect that? I wonder whether there is a significant difference between sexes.

marieantoinehairnet · 24/07/2021 07:33

I have also noticed that the non mask wearers look gammony, and other than that it's younger people not wearing them. It is unfair on staff, who have no choice to avoid the non mask wearers.

Nice sweeping judgement, there.

Exemption may no longer exist (you can't be exempt from a law which doesn't exist), but some people still can't wear masks. Sorry if that makes disabled people/those with health conditions 'look gammony'.

(Also, stop it with the ridiculous juvenile name calling, and I say that as a card-carrying yoghurt knitting lefty.)

marieantoinehairnet · 24/07/2021 07:44

Oh fo behave, if your CEV right now I'm fairly sure you'd continue wearing your lanyard, Mumsnet is absolutely full of people with a huge chip on the shoulder

You've never had to wear a lanyard. Ever. And now there's no mask mandate to be exempt from, there's even less of an expectation to do so. And what, do lanyards make you look less gammony?

What's being CEV got to do with being unable to wear a mask?

marieantoinehairnet · 24/07/2021 07:50

Premenstrual or what?

TheVampiresWife · 24/07/2021 07:58

@marieantoinehairnet

Premenstrual or what?
Oh, sexist and ableist Grin

Why does asking what being CEV has to do with wearing a mask make me 'premenstrual'?

marieantoinehairnet · 24/07/2021 08:13

Not getting into an argument with a poster who accuses me of being sexist but uses her head s and in her user name, jog on

Uses my husband's name? What? Grin
marieantoinehairnet · 24/07/2021 08:19

Gammony came from another poster lower down, but her description fitted perfectly the kind of middle aged man she was talking about, over privileged/overfed/over indulged...

At no point did I say CEV, someone else made that up

Hey though, that's mumsnuts

TheVampiresWife · 24/07/2021 08:21

Bonkers, eh. One of the stranger insults that has been hurled on here. Almost as weird as being told I use my husband's name in my username Confused

You did mention CEV.

marieantoinehairnet · 24/07/2021 08:23

Only because you did, Lord above

marieantoinehairnet · 24/07/2021 08:24

BTW, I am CEV, immune compromised, but I can and do wear a mask - you really are looking for an argument

TheVampiresWife · 24/07/2021 08:24

Sorry, where did I? I said people with disabilities/health conditions. Not CEV. Massive difference.

Also, what's all this about using my husband's name? Grin

Me too. I also have trigeminal neuralgia, so I can't.

@Jaxhog

And 300-400 people were dying a day in the flu peak a couple of years ago.

When was this? How long did it last for, as I don't remember those sort of figures! If you mean during the Spanish Flu, that was 100 years ago.

Flu deaths in the winter of 2014/2015 were 44,000 and 34,000 in the winter of 2016 / 2017. Both of which could easily result in 300 to 400 flu deaths a day over a winter.

Covid in 2020 however has resulted in the highest annual death toll per 1,000 of population in the UK in over 12 years (since 2008) using the WHO recommended age adjusted measure.
