Will we be locking down again this year?

Sorry, I'm sure it's been done to death Blush

But do you think we will lock down again this year or are we done for now? Seems unlikely given the new blasé attitude of Boris etc - He seems to care less now

Another unknown is how long the vaccines last. If it’s not that long boosters may also be needed.

TheKeatingFive · 14/07/2021 10:43

Boosters are already planned for.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2021 10:44

I’m fully expecting to be having a booster before the year is out.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/07/2021 10:45

Planned yes but we don’t know whether immunity drops off a cliff or just needs a single booster.

TheKeatingFive · 14/07/2021 10:48

Well given that a single shot made a difference to no immunity at all, it would be reasonable to suggest that it should be enough.

And what’s the alternative, two shots a year? Hardly unachievable once supply chains are firmed up.

Covidforalways · 14/07/2021 10:49
@Covidforalways ok so yep vaccinations are the answer for China, ANZ etc. Issue is that programme is going so slowly in ANZ and there are lots of anti-vaxxers there. The worrying thing now is how long that is going to take. China issue is that their vaccine is not as effective and may not be able to hold vs Delta. So we may think the grass is greener but it is often more nuanced.
Who says their vaccines aren't as effective? i know two people, both db vaccinated, both very poorly with CV in the UK, both off work

Pfizer is developing a booster to use against Delta.

China has been studying Cv for years, i doubt their vaccine is less effective than ours...suspect politics on this one.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 14/07/2021 10:55

@Coronateachingagain

Nope. 7821 yesterday.

However it is a huge jump. And if you take into account population size, it’s probably comparable to us having 30000 or so.

But that’s what happens when you open and simultaneously expose a large unvaccinated population to delta.

We’ve been “naturally vaccinating” aka hopelessly controlling this virus for 18 months. Hence we have a higher death toll, but a smaller naive population. We also have a larger population double vaccinated than say the Netherlands.

Perhaps it won’t continue, but the doubling rate for cases is slowing, yet still exposing loads of people to covid. Add that and 100-200,000 per day second doses, and by September you’ll have a population that in theory should be in a decent place.

Not at all, it’s widely established, google it.

OliveTree75 · 14/07/2021 11:06

@MercyBooth

It would be a hard year but I think it'd be worth it for Zero Covid

I think @NannyAndJohn just came!

😂😂😂
Quartz2208 · 14/07/2021 11:13

Netherlands are at a different stage though so it isnt comparing like for like. They opened up as Delta was hitting with a lower vaccination rate. Pretty much if we had opened up completely 21st June.

So it will be what effect delaying it has had

LucilleTheVampireBat · 14/07/2021 11:13

I think the topless bus tour might be a good shout instead

I am interested in this. Is being topless mandatory? Do you have to wear no top, but a mask? How does it work if it is cold? I wouldn't want to take someone's eye out.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/07/2021 11:15

I agree two shots not practical hence me saying if vaccinations less effective than we hope over time could be a reason for another lockdown. Not that I’m going hoping for one.

I think being topless on the topless bus would be very exhilarating Grin And extremely covid safe. Grin
Blessex · 14/07/2021 11:34

@Covidforalways it’s well documented that the Sinovac vaccine is less effective. Not politics at all.

Blessex · 14/07/2021 11:34

@Quartz2208 yep bang on. Netherlands opened up too early - 3 weeks ago - and their vaccine programme is behind ours.

walkoflifewoohoo · 14/07/2021 11:45

"We should have gone into lockdown weeks ago.

Hospitalisations are now rising exponentially and the resulting deaths are already baked in.

But the government are still going to just let it rip."

@NannyAndJohn please, even though you've been doing this a year I'm starting to think you're on a wind up. Baked in 😂😂😂

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2021 12:03

What does ‘baked in’ even mean? I thing the gloomy message is getting lost with the weird jargon.

walkoflifewoohoo · 14/07/2021 12:17

It's baked in after exponentially ripping through the museums

You'd know that if only you understood the noisy data.

Sadly without a maths degree it's hard.

Australia extends Sydney lockdown as COVID-19 outbreak nears 900 infections

www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/sydney-braces-extended-lockdown-covid-19-spreads-2021-07-14/

this is why I can't see how closing borders like Australia keeps the virus away like some people claim uk should close them.

Legoninjago1 · 14/07/2021 12:36

@TheVampiresWife

Topless bus tour?! That sounds positively indecent. I don't want Covids on my thrupennies tyvm Shock
How can I have got to 45 and never heard that priceless nugget?! 🤣
Legoninjago1 · 14/07/2021 12:36

The rhyming slang I mean !

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2021 12:48

'Covid tits' is that on the list of symptoms now? Shock

Bordois · 14/07/2021 13:07

TheVampiresWife
About that 100,000.

I remember you confidently stating we'd hit that daily figure by 21 June.

Then it wasabsolutelygoing to be 19 July - highly unlikely we'll be there by Monday.

When's your next definite date?

I have a prediction. An actual proper prediction.

At the point where we get to, or come close to, 100k cases a day (which is not impossible and I dont think anyone denies the possibility - just the dates nanny insisted it would happen) Nanny will be all over these threads like stink on shit crowing about how they were right and no one would listen.
