Will we be locking down again this year?

Sorry, I'm sure it's been done to death Blush

But do you think we will lock down again this year or are we done for now? Seems unlikely given the new blasé attitude of Boris etc - He seems to care less now

The NHS workers I know have been given instructions to prepare for "the next lockdown" this winter. To be honest I was quite surprised by that. I think lockdowns are a thing of the past and the Government will just let it rip through the population now

That is called having a contigency plan in place for the possibility of it happening. The NHS have contingencies for a wide range of potential events but that does not mean that they are expecting them.

The only countries that have properly pulled off T&T in any meaningful way are ones with radically different laws around data privacy.

So South Korea, for example, has an excellent system, but one that uses things like mobile phone/bank card data, cctv footage and publishes the geolocation of confirmed cases on the internet.

Our data privacy laws wouldn’t allow any of that.

It would be a hard year but I think it'd be worth it for Zero Covid

You cannot get zero covid. It is a complete impossibility unless you expect everybody to stay at home forever, grow their own crops, close the borders until the end of time and have zero interaction with anybody else ever.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2021 09:28

@NannyAndJohn

Then the solution is to get an app that actually works developed instead of abandoning the entire thing.

Until then we have to make do with what we've got.

Absolutely the solution is to develop an App that is fit for purpose. Someone that knows what they are doing should do that asap. The one that we do have cost millions, but we can't 'make do' with an App that is so inaccurate and unreliable. Confused That makes no sense whatsoever and totally understandable that people either don't want it or deleted it because it just doesn't work properly.

NZ says hello.

And we're very similar in a lot of ways.

I think there are posters on here that want that. Or pretend to want that at least to make everyone Hmm.

I think nanny could get behind all of that. Wink

TheKeatingFive · 14/07/2021 09:33

Yeah, not really.

Lack of self sufficiency with food, a land border with another country and being only 20 miles away from mainland Europe being the three most obvious that come to mind.

Sparklingbrook · 14/07/2021 09:35

NZ says hello

Does it? Confused

Even then the problem is not everyone has (or wants) a smartphone, or one that's capable of running the app. I also think too much damage has been done by the existing app - who is going to trust the new improved version if it ever happens?

JellyBabiesFan · 14/07/2021 09:37

NZ does not have zero covid so I am not exactly sure what the point of your comment is.

TheKeatingFive · 14/07/2021 09:37

Yes this is a big problem

Yes, TBH I think that ship has sailed. We should have had something that worked the first time around. Nobody is going to trust another App at this point. Even if it is the best App ever we're over it.
mrsgrealish69 · 14/07/2021 09:41

I’ve got a feeling restrictions and rules could return again if they go- masks, distancing, rule of 6 etc

I don’t think we will ever have a full-on spring 2020 type lockdown again though.

Quartz2208 · 14/07/2021 09:42

What ways are we similar to New Zealand though @NannyAndJohn that we could have really achieved what they have. And neither are we similar to China either for different reasons.

The Australian effort with track and trace and the moment is huge and it is touch and go whether it will be enough.

This variant with its R number is double smallpox and Polio.

Whether Zero Covid could have been achieved last year at the start is debatable could it have been contained? Personally once it spread I think that ship had sailed but if it hadnt then it certainly has now.

Sirius99 · 14/07/2021 09:44

I think another lockdown surly just depends on numbers, cases, hospitalisation, deaths, who many deaths can the PM and public take ?

Remmy123 · 14/07/2021 09:44

No why the need to lockdown if we are vaccinated and seriously.,, who is really going to do that again and not see their vaccinated family?

I know there are covid fanatics on here that are obsessed amd wouid love it!!!

TheKeatingFive · 14/07/2021 09:45

Once it got out of China it was game over.

Any country achieving zero covid would need to keep borders closed and that’s not sustainable for any great length of time.

Sirius99 · 14/07/2021 09:46

Remmy123
Seriously are there people that haven’t seen their families in all this time, unless there in another country

Blessex · 14/07/2021 09:50

All this talk about Australia, NZ and China. Can somebody explain what their next steps are. Zero Covid is not possible.

Arrowheart · 14/07/2021 09:51

@NannyAndJohn

Proper contact tracing would be far more feasible with very low numbers of cases - just like Australia or NZ.

Not that easy when you're approaching 100000 and still climbing.

You are OBSESSED with the 100,000 number. If we have 7, 40, 564, 30,000 cases we will always be 'approaching' another number. Have you got a bet on that if we hit 100,000 cases you will become a millionaire?
TheVampiresWife · 14/07/2021 09:51

@Arrowheart

'It would be hard for a year but worth it for zero covid' - this is the best yet from *@NannyAndJohn*!!!
It's up there with museums being a breeding ground for long covid, definitely.

Oh no. I missed that announcement. Any museum in particular or all of them? Shock

Ooh I missed that gem
