Will we be locking down again this year?

Sorry, I'm sure it's been done to death Blush

But do you think we will lock down again this year or are we done for now? Seems unlikely given the new blasé attitude of Boris etc - He seems to care less now

@NannyAndJohn

Proper contact tracing would be far more feasible with very low numbers of cases - just like Australia or NZ.

Not that easy when you're approaching 100000 and still climbing.

About that 100,000.

I remember you confidently stating we'd hit that daily figure by 21 June.

Then it was absolutely going to be 19 July - highly unlikely we'll be there by Monday.

When's your next definite date?

Arrowheart · 14/07/2021 09:55

I missed the museum scare from @NannyAndJohn 😀 but I'll be sure to be on my guard when admiring any old artifacts

I am planning a museum trip next weekend. How do I find out if it's one of the long covid ones? Is it on Trip Advisor?

Avoid anything shaped like a Petri dish ;

Covidforalways · 14/07/2021 10:00

@Blessex

All this talk about Australia, NZ and China. Can somebody explain what their next steps are. Zero Covid is not possible.
Thats fairly obvious, vaccinations.

Assuming the data out of China is correct, all these countries have avoided the deaths and the economic hits, if they keep CV at bay, they can vaccinate and be more or less where we are.

By early June, China was doing 20m per day.

We could also have done similar.

Its just lazy to say we couldn't have.

Perfect. Nothing sciencey planned museum wise. Maybe Roman. Are cathedrals ok?
TheVampiresWife · 14/07/2021 10:03

N&J was talking about museums where children go on school trips - avoid the more hands-on, interactive ones and hopefully you should be fine Grin

Legoninjago1 · 14/07/2021 10:04

I doubt we'll lock down again unless there's some other feckin variant and vaccines need tweaking.
I doubly doubt schools will close again.
But ... you never know
Get your jabs people.

MarshaBradyo · 14/07/2021 10:05

Sparkling I’d avoid, the acoustics are making me nervous - virus might ricochet back at you

My DC are adults so it's been a while since I visited one of those.Grin I'll be peering at things in glass cases and sampling the museum coffee shop cake hopefully. Phew.

Actually that's a good point. I think the topless bus tour might be a good shout instead. As long as I don't touch the handrail to get on the top deck obviously.
MarshaBradyo · 14/07/2021 10:08

Make sure you sit at the front

You could get blow back! Grin

Grin I'll wear a crash helmet maybe.

I am really looking forward to my short break next week. I don't know who to apologise to about that really.

TheVampiresWife · 14/07/2021 10:13

Topless bus tour?! That sounds positively indecent. I don't want Covids on my thrupennies tyvm Shock

BoaCunstrictor · 14/07/2021 10:14

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

Absolutely the solution is to develop an App that is fit for purpose. Someone that knows what they are doing should do that asap.The one that we do have cost millions, but we can't 'make do' with an App that is so inaccurate and unreliable. confused That makes no sense whatsoever and totally understandable that people either don't want it or deleted it because it just doesn't work properly.

Even then the problem is not everyone has (or wants) a smartphone, or one that's capable of running the app. I also think too much damage has been done by the existing app - who is going to trust the new improved version if it ever happens?

Mmm true. I would've at least considered downloading a version that wasn't so obviously flawed last summer, but the trust levels and compliance have been so eroded since then. It's really done a lot of damage.
MarshaBradyo · 14/07/2021 10:17

Vampire I laughed 😂

One big issue with an app is privacy. The one we use doesn’t know who we are but in other countries it is more enforceable as that privacy is gone,

Not sure what most would prefer but I’m not sure the data protection law/s would allow it (not a lawyer but it is interesting)

I think you can get a dual ticket for the topless bus and the topless boat, works out cheaper. I could fashion a mask bra maybe? Grin
ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 14/07/2021 10:30

@Covidforalways my Chinese colleagues are back in lockdown.

There are worrying indications that the Sinovac vaccine isn't very effective against v delta.

Not sure we can say they are out of the woods.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 14/07/2021 10:33

@PrincessNutNuts

You still think we’ll hit 100,000? I thought originally you said we’d easily hit by 19th July?

Can’t see it happening personally.

Blessex · 14/07/2021 10:38

@Covidforalways ok so yep vaccinations are the answer for China, ANZ etc. Issue is that programme is going so slowly in ANZ and there are lots of anti-vaxxers there. The worrying thing now is how long that is going to take. China issue is that their vaccine is not as effective and may not be able to hold vs Delta. So we may think the grass is greener but it is often more nuanced.

Look at the Netherlands. 50,000 tested positive yesterday I think after two weeks from when they reopened. And they are a much smaller country. I don't have the data or a crystal ball but 100,000 is not unthinkable in August. I will be bunkering in my rabbit hole.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/07/2021 10:39

We have a better chance of avoiding another lockdown if secondary age kids are vaccinated ASAP. Why is this not happening even though a vaccine has been approved? This will help vulnerable adults who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons too or those whose vaccines don’t work fully.

It also avoids long COVID-19 in those children. Why is this not happening now?

Blessex · 14/07/2021 10:39

@ThinkAboutItTomorrow ah cross post!

MarshaBradyo · 14/07/2021 10:41

China will have an issue as their own vaccine isn’t as effective

Using a lower efficacy vaccine across a huge population, which will take a fair amount of time, then opening the borders

Plus originating and having very tough lockdown.

Blessex · 14/07/2021 10:41

@Coronateachingagain it’s mainly going through the youngsters in the Netherlands so their hospitals are fine. It’s kind of inevitable - it’s just a question of when not if.
