Wait for euro final to be over and Boris with lock us down again. Are you going to follow the rules if he does?

Oh and she isn’t party to any “NHS planning strategy”. Apparently there isn’t one! Maybe that ought to be more worrying…?

TheVampiresWife · 12/07/2021 08:01
@TheVampiresWife that’s what she calls herself, it’s not my term!

Feel free to disbelieve me, but i’m not inventing it (or my friend). People seem to want so much to pretend it isn’t happening, but it’s all repeating just as before.
It's not though, is it. We have an overwhelmingly successful vaccination programme. Hospitalisations are remaining very low compared to last autumn, and it's no surprise when even one vaccination offers up to 94% protection from illness serious enough to require hospital treatment.

It's nothing like 'just as before' and I'm shocked that your lung medicine friend thinks it is.

Lockdown is coming
TheVampiresWife · 12/07/2021 08:05

A more up to date graph. Useful as you can see clearly that although hospitalisations have risen since the first one was published, they've risen at nothing like the same rate as last year.

Also worth remembering that those being admitted are younger and not as seriously ill.

Lockdown is coming
HelloMissus · 12/07/2021 08:05

Maybe. Maybe not.
Just enjoy the freedoms we have. I was at Wembley last night and still suffering this morning Grin

Lemonmelonsun · 12/07/2021 09:29

It's too soon to say, it's such a fluid situation and we have vaccines, summer which as whitty says, gives us that small edge on the virus.
It will be interesting to see what happens after the euros esp as most of the crowd should have had at least one vaccine.
We are still surfing the wave and rather than this black and white all or nothing approach I think it should be start stop flow approach, if it gets bad again bring some curbs back but much shorter term... Not full kick down again but simple curbs, only one in supermarkets, masks in indoor places and schools, ventilation ventilation ventilation esp in pubs and restaurants, open a feckkn window and door!

Thewiseoneincognito · 12/07/2021 09:52

It is coming, just not yet.

My guess and it’s just a guess is that public opinion will start to favour one from October onwards once it becomes evident boosters aren’t the adequate shield of protection necessary for the over 60s.

newnortherner111 · 12/07/2021 09:56

Mr Johnson if he does return to any restrictions (there was never a lockdown at any stage) will do so weeks too late for them to be the most effective. I expect the greatest restrictions faced for those in England over the summer will be those from other countries not accepting UK visitors or doing so with quarantine.

The only time Mr Johnson has acted in good time over the last 18 months was to be on time for his wedding.

lorca · 12/07/2021 10:01

Oh well, I've already had the Facebook posts saying 'I will continue to wear my mask to protect the vulnerable' Envy

TheKeatingFive · 12/07/2021 10:01

there was never a lockdown at any stage

What the hell do people think they’re achieving by spouting stuff like this? Hmm

Because the doors weren’t welded shut it didn’t count or something?

Gothichouse40 · 12/07/2021 10:04

Im not even having the life I wanted, let alone the summer I wanted. I do hope you are wrong as I don't think mentally that I could cope with another Lockdown.

user1477391263 · 12/07/2021 10:12

So they was getting there haircut, going out for meals, the pub, gym, cinema, holidays and theater was they? Lovely if you could. It was all shut in England

You can do ad hoc versions of most of things if you want to: hire a hairdresser pal to come to your house, invite friends round for meals, drinks and DVD nights, go and stay with friends or relatives for a change of scene. I think more and more people have been basically doing all of these as time has gone on.

Not theater admittedly---not sure I'd want to be treated to other people's idea of amateur dramatics, a pandemic's already bad enough without that.

bringincrazyback · 12/07/2021 10:20

@PurpleDaisies

There’s no appetite for further lockdown.
FFS. This isn't about 'appetite'.
TheKeatingFive · 12/07/2021 10:22

Well it is actually. No point in imposing a lockdown that the majority don’t adhere to.

CrunchyCarrot · 12/07/2021 10:24

@Thewiseoneincognito once it becomes evident boosters aren’t the adequate shield of protection necessary for the over 60s.

Why do you think they won't be adequate?

I believe Pfizer is currently trialing a newly-tweaked for the Delta variant booster shot, but if the current vaccines are just re-administered again that may not be adequate, I suppose.

TomNooksToenail · 12/07/2021 10:25

No one in their right mind is going to stick to it, are they?! If politicians can break lockdown to have affairs, I'm going to have Sunday lunch with my parents.

What makes you think this? Given that current vaccines are doing a splendid job of keeping hospitalisations and deaths low.
igelkott2021 · 12/07/2021 10:26

Why would we need another lockdown when virtually every adult who wants to be is vaccinated?

It would be good thing if certain precautions remained, like wearing masks in crowded indoor spaces, but that's a very long way from a lockdown.

Notsowise · 12/07/2021 10:26

@Thewiseoneincognito we haven’t even given any boosters yet, how could you possibly know that they aren’t an ‘adequate shield’?

The public (bar you, Nanny and Princess) will not favour another lockdown. As Chris Whitty said, you reach a stage where you have done what you can and now we need to get on with it and accept more people will die.

igelkott2021 · 12/07/2021 10:27

there was never a lockdown at any stage

Hmm I clearly dreamt the three lockdowns we had then.

Chillychangchoo · 12/07/2021 10:27

@TheKeatingFive

Agreed. If there’s no appetite, there’s no compliance.

They will never get the same level of compliance back now. Those days are gone.

mightbealittlebitmad · 12/07/2021 10:34

Good luck trying to police people doing stuff privately. Nobody I know is willing to stay apart from friends and family anymore and people will just get private hair cuts if it's all closed.

Quite how they will pay furlough I don't know unless they won't and have all of us out of a job. That's a lot of people on benefits without the disposable income to add to the economy.

I already have a hairdresser I can use so at least we can get haircuts and they can earn some money when their main place of work has been closed down and they are struggling.

Garfunkle · 12/07/2021 10:35

No one in their right mind is going to stick to it, are they?! If politicians can break lockdown to have affairs, I'm going to have Sunday lunch with my parents

That’s what I think too. If crowds of thousands of people can get together in the name of sport and Johnson can invite people in from overseas for G7 then I can meet up with my family.

Enough is enough!

Thewiseoneincognito · 12/07/2021 10:42

@Notsowise the public will be crying out to be locked down once this mess spills into the autumn, July 19th is the floodgates opening, the gov will start backtracking very soon.

@TheVampiresWife I think this because we’re just waiting for the vaccine resistant variants to rear their heads, no doubt out there already we just haven’t sequenced them enough yet.

There will always be new strains, some possibly resistant to current vaccines, whenever we reopen. You can lockdown on and off for decades and still they'll come. I really don't see what the point of putting off reopening would be. Also worth remembering that there's no guarantee new strains will be vaccine resistant anyway.

Also, the public won't be crying out for lockdown. At least, the vast majority won't. There's no more furlough - how on earth will people pay their bills?

Notsowise · 12/07/2021 10:48

@Thewiseoneincognito ‘crying out’ for a lockdown… OK sure.

Yes, everyone (except you) has done their bit and got the jab, only to be desperate to be locked down a few months later.
