@RaindropsOnRosie

I don't care what happens with masks, as long as people stop wearing the bloody sunflower lanyard to show they're mask exempt.
Yes it's been misappropriated hasn't it.

Let's go back to using it for those with hidden disabilities who may need a bit of support.

Chillychangchoo · 04/07/2021 18:29

@luckylavender

Does it really though?

Personally I couldn’t give a flying fuck if anyone chooses to wear a mask or not. The fact that they will now not be mandatory from the 19th July is fantastic news for some people.

I can’t bloody wait. No more steamed up glasses, smudged make up and I can wear some lipstick again. Hurray!!

Oh and the best thing is I can now SMILE at strangers again. That’s if they want to smile at me of course, perhaps they will now frown in my maskless direction. Still that will say more about them than it does about me 😉.

Roll.it.on!!!

My son wears one of these as he has autism. But he also has OCD so he takes it off en route to the loo as he's afraid it will be contaminated. It will be so much easier when he doesn't need to bother with all this.
Honey12346 · 04/07/2021 18:31

@Allmyarseandpeggymartin

Do they work though? Really? What would the material difference been in the death rates if we’d not been wearing crumpled up bits of tatty fabric that have been shoved in coat pockets and gathering fluff in handbags all winter?

I’m sceptical honestly

In Sweden they're not mandatory and actually advised against and their death rates are lower than ours, mumsnet still swears it's because of population density and masks still save grann tho

Wear a mask if you want, stop being judgy to people who don't want to.

And protecting you or making you feel better isn't my problem sounds very harsh but it really isn't.

BeardyButton · 04/07/2021 18:33

Another absolutely disastrous policy decision in the UK.

“Harsh”? No! Sociopathic. Perhaps.

Indeed. As for labelling people who don't or calling them names, that has no effect, either.

Thank you, I am happy in my life but the abuse previously reasonable people have been slinging towards rape victims, people with autism, mental issues etc. since the last year, and while doing it being convinced they are the kind and morally superior ones will just never not sadden me Sad

OK but using that logic the same can be said for all the people that come on here with stories of why they can't wear them? Making them feel better for not wearing a mask wasn't anyone elses problem? It's not other peoples job to make the maskless person on the train or trying to enter a shop for example feel better for not wearing one, so if they want to judge why shouldn't they?

@TheVampiresWife

How are random strangers responsible for your health?

A billion times this, and I'm CV.

Good for you. I'm CV too and I'm still capable of understanding the concept of being part of a human community though.

Maybe if you didn't have such a large chip on your shoulder about being CV, you'd be able to consider that instead of holding up your lack of pro-social inclinations as some weird badge of honour.

Having weaknesses or vulnerabilities does not make anyone worth less as a person.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 04/07/2021 18:39

Cannot wait to ditch my mask. Hoping to be free from the rest of the anti-covid pantomime too (one way systems, hand sanitizer, etc.).

luckylavender · 04/07/2021 18:40

It seems to me that it's the anti mask brigade who keep bringing this up. I'm happy to make my own decisions & not bait people.

Cafeaulait27 · 04/07/2021 18:40

From what I’m reading on Twitter it seems to be politically charged -

If you will ditch your mask your an uncaring Tory
If you keep your mask on you are caring and hate the Tories

Until I’m fully vaccinated I may still wear mine on public transport, but overall I’m really pleased that we’re getting back to normal. Finding it really sad that people are being like this tbh. It seems a lot of people still think that high cases will mean high deaths when it’s clear that that isn’t the case now with vaccines.

I wonder if any of these people watch the briefings with Chris Whittys slides anymore - I always find them really helpful. I don’t think people understand why the decision to relax on masks has been made, because they just see the scary case numbers in the news and panic. And plus they don’t trust anything Boris says I suppose (can’t blame them for that one)

luckylavender · 04/07/2021 18:41

@Chillychangchoo - I'm talking about the exact language you used. Much loved of the far right.

Can I ask why you feel this way?

I used a sunflower lanyard until a few months ago (at my doctor's suggestion - I had never heard of them before). Then I heard that those who had originally used them for their intended purpose (ie, requiring extra consideration/assistance when shopping/in public places etc) found it frustrating that they had been co-opted for mask exemption and their original meaning had been lost. Now I wear a simple red lanyard printed 'mask exempt'. I've been told it's 'fake' a couple of times however!

Imnothereforthedrama · 04/07/2021 18:42

@Viciouslybashed

Will hospitals ask people to wear masks still I wonder? If so why do shop workers etc not deserve that protection still.
But people in shops didn’t have to wear them at first it was made mandatory later . They can wear one if they want but I suspect they won’t .
RaraRachael · 04/07/2021 18:42

I've never been convinced of the value of mask wearing. In Scotland we were told to wear them as this was the only way to stop transmission. As soon as it became mandatory, the rates went up.

I will not be wearing one as soon as it's possible. I can't really understand why people still would if they're vaccinated. Enough is enough.

luckylavender · 04/07/2021 18:44

@IcedPurple - as if no one went out for months during lockdown! There was still some interaction. Some of us worked in offices.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 18:44

@user432543424532 I was speaking for myself, not every CV person. Because to do that would be to make assumptions, wouldn't it.

Also lol at 'chip on your shoulder' Grin

changingstages · 04/07/2021 18:47

Predictable shouting - same voices yelling 'mask police' and also 'granny killers' on the other side.

What's really sad is that this has become such a political, anger inducing subject. If you can't wear a mask then nobody should be being rude about it, that's completely unacceptable. If you wear a mask nobody should be wanging on about face nappies to you.

I'll continue wearing a mask for a while longer, as will many people I know. And a couple won't, because they are exempt. And we will just get on with it without wailing and gnashing of teeth.

TheVampiresWife · 04/07/2021 18:49
@TheVampiresWife - the pre Covid question is very interesting most people I know reporting no colds or flu this winter. And yet they don't work...? Appreciate you're exempt.
There are many possible reasons for this that aren't necessarily mask-related. We were in lockdown over winter so people weren't mixing, schools were closed, there was a massive increase in uptake of the flu jab, social distancing was being adhered to, people weren't squashed together on buses/in shops/in pubs etc over the usually very busy festive period. Masks may have contributed but it will only have been a contribution, not the reason.

SueSaid · 04/07/2021 18:49

'Good for you. I'm CV too and I'm still capable of understanding the concept of being part of a human community though.'

Yes. For me non mask wearers (anecdotally obviously) have gone out at busy times, 2pm at tescos on a Sat afternoon? I could guarantee there'd be 2 non mask wearers invading my space at the fridge aisle. No, they shouldn't stay locked up but they should have consideration for others.

If you are adamant you won't wear one fine (we have to say) but just maybe go at quieter times and give us mask wearers a bit of consideration?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 04/07/2021 18:50

I’m not bothered what others decide to do but I will stop wearing mine in shops etc as soon as told we don’t have to. I have to wear one all day at work in healthcare so will be nice to have a break from it all in other areas of my life and let my immune system start building up again. I’m more concerned about all the mask wearing and effects on immune systems young and old
