The mask police are out in full force. It saddens me what society has become Sad

It is herd immunity and survival of the fittest in action. This course of action will reduce the social care bill, which is just what the Tories were working on in Jan 2020.

The UK public have enough problems with washing their hands, please don't expect them to consider other people's health when it comes to masks.

Ignorance is bliss. Hopefully we will have achieved full herd immunity by Christmas.

Tealightsandd · 06/07/2021 00:35

Nope. Disabled people rely on social care. And Long Covid is leaving some people disabled...

Also Covid deaths are disproportionately affecting poorer people, who already have shorter life expectancy. Wealthier elderly in the leafy shires are relatively protected.

Covid often doesn't kill, including the elderly. It instead causes strokes and other debilitating issues. That require long term hospital treatment and social care...

If eugenics is the aim, why is the personal choice and freedom to choose the peaceful and painless death of assisted suicide not allowed (in the UK).

Good old-fashioned British common sense can do that. And now it will. That’s also why, from 19 July, there’ll also be no more speed limits on the roads. If you want to do the school run at 90 miles an hour then you can, and if you don’t, then don’t. And if you wipe out the odd pedestrian or two then they were making an informed decision to cross the road, that’s their problem not yours.

Funny how its never #givepeopleenoughmoneytoselfisolate that trends.

Even now some of you think you’re entitled to question those who will choose not to wear one the inflated view of self importance never fails to astound me.

RocheLobe · 06/07/2021 08:00

Having seen some of the comments on here after yesterday’s press conference, I’m wondering whether we’re going to start getting people arguing that it’s selfish to wear a mask because you’re not doing your bit to ensure we have this third wave during the summer months instead of winter months.

[note I do NOT think this is a sensible argument]

ALL the arguments are ridiculous.

Wear a mask, don't wear a mask, you do you and let others do themselves. In a couple of weeks hundreds will be mixing/dancing/snogging on dancefloors and packed into sweaty gigs. Having a go at anyone's mask choice (or ability to wear one) after that seems utterly redundant.

Chillychangchoo · 06/07/2021 08:12

@TheVampiresWife

I know ridiculous isn’t it? Just do whatever you want to do.

Isn't it just.
ineedaholidaynow · 06/07/2021 08:31

Why do people think Chris Whitty said he would still be wearing masks in certain situations? I would rather listen to what he has to say than Boris

Not sure that’s the sturdiest of analogies, really, is it? Cars kill and injure people every year. About 25,000 people killed or seriously injured each year in road accidents, another 30,000 deaths where air pollution was a significant contributor. But we don’t ban cars, because we as a society think that would have a disproportionate impact on people’s lives overall, even if on the face of it of course your right to pop to Tesco is less important than someone else’s life.

I suppose you could say “ah but unlike covid we mitigate against the damages caused by cars, that’s what speed limits and seatbelt laws are for!”. But if one of the biggest, costliest, fastest vaccine rollouts we’ve ever done doesn’t count as a mitigation against the damage of Covid then I’m not sure what would.

Also seatbelts and speed limits aren’t emergency measures, we’re comfortable with living with those forever if we want fo be in cars. Not sure the general public feel the same about masks and social distancing.

User135644 · 06/07/2021 08:50

@Wildewoodz

The saddest part is all this makes the return of measures more likely in autumn,

Don’t blame me!

Have fun cracking on.

And then they'll be the first to kick off about it.
RocheLobe · 06/07/2021 09:46

If restrictions return in the autumn it won’t be because of anything you or I have done or felt or believed. It’s as much a political decision as opening up.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 06/07/2021 09:51

@ilovesooty

Oh, the mask police. All over the place apparently.

Once restrictions are lifted people can make their own choices. Why are people getting worked up about it one way or the other? Just choose for yourself and let other people get on with their choices.

I completely agree with this. I will probably choose to wear one in busy or small indoor spaces. I don't mind whether others wear one or not, and certainly won't be judging anyone or getting annoyed or angry with anyone for not wearing one, or for wearing one in a situation when I don't wear one.
DeadButDelicious · 06/07/2021 10:02

I plan on wearing a mask in enclosed spaces like the bus or the shop where it's not possible to maintain a distance, I will also wear one in places that I am requested to wear one, like the hair dressers for instance, I will also wear one in winter (they do keep my face toasty). I don't necessarily like the masks, especially not in the summer heat, but it's not a great hardship to me to pop one on if needs be. What would be a hardship is us having to isolate and if a mask can help avoid that then that's fine by me.

If others don't want to wear one then that's up to them but I will be keeping mine.

Anythingelseintheboxpandora · 06/07/2021 13:39

As usual, people are directing their ire at the wrong people.

You feel strongly that masks should continue to be worn. Go and lobby the government or write to your MP or whatever. Stop voting Tory.

Don’t focus your rage on the people who simply will be complying with the law by exercising their right not to wear a mask. They government have told them this is acceptable and that’s their business.

For reference and full disclosure I am in Scotland and not yet required to make the choice, but if I was living in England I’d probably continue to wear them for a few weeks anyway.
