Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

Yes. It is because football is male dominated. The patriarchy still rules. Blokes want their footy, the Eton boys, i.e. Boris and co will give it to them, regardless of a pandemic.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 18/06/2021 19:06

@Baileysforchristmas

Well that is me well and truly done. I will be avoiding the Covid rules wherever possible and carrying on my life as normal as possible.
A lot of people are, outside MN, that is.
EasterIssland · 18/06/2021 19:06

The final is In London as well… and the vip people might not need to self isolate when landing so they can go to the Match.

Lockheart · 18/06/2021 19:08

@Clydie89

All I've seen on the news is some sliding about in the rain and washing up liquid in a fountain... Far better than the usual English fans abroad chucking chairs at the local police surely??

Blame the govt for allowing this to happen, not the young fans who've been locked up the same as the rest of us and now there's a massive event on and they party because its legal! Yes they were advised against it and yes it's stupid to have travelled, but at least they have a chance of watching it properly in a pub rather than abiding by the stricter rules here. It was inevitable, especially for this match.

And the naked men on tubes and in Hyde Park.

And the unbelievable amount of litter everywhere - they've literally trashed the city.

This isn't harmless fun, this is actively intimidating and out of order.

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 18/06/2021 19:09

@MsFogi

There has been a very clear exemption for football throughout the pandemic - can't deprive the men of their football!
Yeah, cos women don't watch football. Groan.
Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 19:09

@MrsFin but the police are not using it, they only use it on defenceless women

Well it will be interesting in 2-3 weeks time. There are huge surges in covid cases in the student population at the moment. They all finished exams and within a week all caught it. My Dd is negative but isolating. There are 8 households around her positive. This variant really is infectious. I wouldn’t be going on the east coast line tomorrow.

The Sarah Everard vigil (while appallingly handled) was held in March when the country was still in full on lockdown.

Cakemonger · 18/06/2021 19:11

I am furious at the contrast between how football crowds have been treated during this pandemic and the police response to the Sarah Everard vigil. Furious. This is patriarchy at its most blatant.

NannyAndJohn · 18/06/2021 19:12

Hello lockdown.

Haudyourwheesht · 18/06/2021 19:12

@DoucheCanoe

As a Scot, I think it's bloody ridiculous that fans were allowed to travel specifically for this whilst every one else is stuck in a perpetual groundhog Day.

I'm not a Covid police informant in the slightest and don't agree with lockdowns anymore but that takes the piss.

Everyone in Scotland is allowed to travel to London.
ufucoffee · 18/06/2021 19:12

The police will be too frightened to try and stop the tartan army enjoying themselves. It's a massive occasion for England and Scotland fans, especially Scotland. If you don't like football, I just don't think you understand.

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 18/06/2021 19:13

What an inane comment. Have you noticed there's an international football tournament on? That was delayed by a year already because of Covid? Or is the whole international tournament a result of what you previously think (tin foil hats on please!) is some sort of patriarchal imposition.

What do you think about the Tokyo Olympics then? Presumably another sign of the patriarchy being alive and well because thousands of years ago Olympics were all-male? Oh hold on, they originated in Greece, presumably the Olympics are heteronormative white male dominated patriarchal events aimed at reinforcing dominant power structures?

Or maybe you're barking up the wrong tree?

*where did I learn all the above terminology? Yup, you guessed it. From angry, negative, toxic academics where I studied.

Sylvan92 · 18/06/2021 19:13

Travelling without a ticket is stupid enough in normal times but in this situation, words fail me. Did or have the Scottish government made any comment on this? Can you imagine if it was the other way round? (I’m Scottish btw)

Whydidimarryhim · 18/06/2021 19:13

What is it with this government and protecting predominantly men and their sports.
There where 3 events just prior to the first lockdown that spread the disease which the experts said they could go ahead and now it continues. It must be money but I’m wondering if it was a women’s sporting event would it be locked down. Dick heads!!!

Lockheart · 18/06/2021 19:14

I'm not really sure it's a straight comparison given the difference in lockdown rules and the sheer volume of people involved.
TheGonnagle · 18/06/2021 19:16

My dd has been at home all week even though she’s done 3 negative lateral flow tests. And her transition to senior school events have been cancelled.
But football and Ascot? Knock your fucking selves out. Bloody farce.

Please back this up with some evidence? Have any women's events been locked down?

Or are you suggesting this one will be?

The March 2020 horse races and pop concerts weren't male dominated events at all.
PurpleHoodie · 18/06/2021 19:17

Bank Holiday weekend was one of the busiest I have dealt with from a professional point of view (busier than many pre-covid weekends).

None of my colleagues will be surprised with the crowds today.

That's why reading some of the 'coronavirus' threads here is jarring.

Doyoumind

You won't be pleased to hear that UEFA want 2,500 VIPs to come from around the world to Wembley for the finals without having to quarantine.

This is actually a good point. Can't be dismissed as a "conspiracy theory looners" thing. This is government policy/wishes. Plebs do one thing. Political mates/families, another.

Helps us plan at work when they make these announcements (whether we agree, or not)

Livelovebehappy · 18/06/2021 19:18

It’s a tinder box. The Scottish fans aren’t in London to be amenable and chummy, they’ve already been pictured throwing beer at people and using aggressive language. When their team loses there will be a lot of very drunken football fans fighting and causing chaos on the streets.

AdoptedBumpkin · 18/06/2021 19:20

I wonder what the best result is from a Covid safety and general safety point of view...a draw?

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2021 19:20

Live central London - all afternoon I’ve heard shouting/chanting followed by lice cars - madness.
And - come on England !

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2021 19:20

Police

Lansonmaid · 18/06/2021 19:21

So annoying to see maskless football fans yelling their chops off (not going to dignify it with the word singing) when our church choir is limited to six people at any one time....getting seriously cheesed off with this now
