Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

@Baileysforchristmas

Luckily my daughter has not had to isolate and there are no cases at her school, probably because most of us have decided to stop LFT tests twice a week.
Why on Earth have you stopped testing?
ElizabethTudor · 18/06/2021 18:07

@AnyFucker

Yes, we are being played for fools. No dancing/singing at weddings but thousands of football fans chanting and shouting in each other’s faces is ok.
Now I know camera angles can seriously distort things, but come on - look at the pictures / videos here, and tell me this is not absolutely ridiculous, when, as many have said on this thread, other gatherings are so totally restricted. It’s absurd.

Euro 2020: Thousands of Scotland fans gather in central London www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-57516928

Mrsjayy · 18/06/2021 18:10

This is entirely the fault of the Scottish fans, travelling down in huge numbers when they had no tickets to the match or indeed to any organised screenings. Bloody idiots

I'm a Scottish person and I y agree with this . They were "asked" not to travel yet there they are sliding down the streets in the rain trying to get in pubs to watch the game. Its so embarrassing and idiotic!

Lalliella · 18/06/2021 18:11

They are idiots. Hopefully Darwin will get them.

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 18:12

@AlmostSummer21 look at my thread and you will see why. I’m not testing or my daughter again unless I have symptoms and only a pcr test.

I agree they are idiots but a little harsh 😉
TempsPerdu · 18/06/2021 18:14

It's nice to see life resuming and people enjoying themselves. The numbers just show you nobody's listening anymore

I’d be totally fine with the football crowds if the same rules applied to other things too. But as per posts upthread, school kids are still stuck in self-isolation while these fans are living it up in Hyde Park. And rumours of special dispensation for foreign travel to the final at Wembley.

secretllama · 18/06/2021 18:15

@Baileysforchristmas

And children are having to isolate for 10 days when there’s nothing wrong with them. I don’t care about people enjoying themselves, I do care there is different rues for different people. We’re not all in it together.
I agree with you .... I think its time for all the nonsense rules to stop. People will gather regardless now so its time to let people open their businesses properly again and stop this nonsense of testing people for no reason.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2021 18:16

I've just been through Kings Cross. I'd forgotten how much I disliked large pissed up groups of Football fans. Challenging to get past. It was unpleasant.

CumbrianExile · 18/06/2021 18:18

@MsFogi

There has been a very clear exemption for football throughout the pandemic - can't deprive the men of their football!
Not sure what you mean by this? Yes matches have been played but no fans (Male or Female) have been allowed in to watch (brief exception for certain areas just before Christmas and the final games of the season).

Fans are allowed now - but still not full stadiums, despite being outdoors!

Compared to the tennis - where Wimbledon will be allowed to sell out the courts, despite 'Freedom Day' not happening Confused

Having said that, the Scottish fans who have traveled without tickets are idiots.

RubyFakeLips · 18/06/2021 18:21

I can’t understand why they’ve come? As far as I know there aren’t any public screenings, they don’t have tickets and seem just to be trashing the place.

My eldest and middle DS have been working around the west end today and said it’s mayhem. Seems madness it’s been allowed and the behaviour is so inconsiderate.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2021 18:22

I'm beyond furious , but not surprised.
If it was English fans in Scotland , I'm sure that Nicola Sturgeon would be saying something about it too! Madness.
( remember not to dance or sing at a wedding though)

PenguinIce · 18/06/2021 18:24

@TruelyonelastSchlep

Does being 90% alcohol stop you from getting covid?

We are about to find out🤓

I am happy to sign up for that experiment......bring on the wine 🍷🍷🍷!
DoucheCanoe · 18/06/2021 18:24

@the80sweregreat I said the same earlier.

NS has been running her mouth about the English travelling here during the heights yet this was allowed to go ahead unchecked.
.

Wakemeuuuup · 18/06/2021 18:27

Time to turn off all of the big screens and make them all disperse

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2021 18:28

I can understand the extension to restrictions, I cannot understand them if they are allowing the gigantic events to happen. Its absolute madness. I understand that its all about lessening spread, not eliminating it but why can't local kids have their prom but 1000s of pissed up people can mix. I hate this stupid government.

Crunchymum · 18/06/2021 18:29

The football match itself has been ticketed in a way to avoid overcrowding. Pubs in London should be ticketed too (not sure how that works to be honest?) but I lat the blame solely on the fuckwits who have come to London.

Not sure how the Delta variant is North of the border but if there is a mass surge then this is the reason!!

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2021 18:29

A friend of mine pointed out that Ascot is going on today .. I hadn't thought of that, but I get the impression that they ' think it's all over ' now ..

Lostinacloud · 18/06/2021 18:30

What’s this? The BBC are reporting on a large crowd gathering in London? I’m gobsmacked! Let’s see if they make any mention of the next lockdown protest. Haven’t seen much, if any, reporting on crowds estimated to have been 5 times larger than this so far.

Suranjeep · 18/06/2021 18:30

We should have blocked the border and turned them back...had this been in Scotland, Krankie would have done just that to keep the English and their germs out.

We might end up with a Loch Ness Monster Variant in England now.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2021 18:30

If I had teens being told ' you can't do whatever' then seeing this on the tv, I'd be furious too. One rule for them

DoucheCanoe · 18/06/2021 18:30

@Crunchymum Delta is pretty rampant here too!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2021 18:31

Ascot can get stuffed too. Wearing a hat doesn't stop you from being a drunken twat.

Pixxie7 · 18/06/2021 18:32

This was inevitable, particularly with such a high profile game as between England and Scotland.

Notonthestairs · 18/06/2021 18:33

A bit off topic but I hadn't realised Wimbledon has been given an exemption for the finals. Something to do with a government research group. All spectators have to either have a negative test beforehand or prove double vaccinated. A number of sports seem to have secured exemptions (golf, F1 as well as football)

amp.theguardian.com/football/2021/jun/14/wembley-to-host-up-to-45000-fans-for-euro-2020-final-and-semi-finals

But agree it's ridiculous to see what's going on in central London when our local primary school sports events have been cancelled.
