Wow the crowds in London

Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

Yes, Johnson should be saying something too

Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 18:54

The government doesn't care about Londoners. Partly because inner (but not outer) London votes Labour, but mainly because for a long time - several decades - money is made in London, often at the expense of Londoners. This is no exception.

Tbh though the football crowds won't make a huge difference. London has had 100s of 1000s of international travellers arriving weekly throughout the pandemic - with most heading straight from the airport onto packed public transport...

It's strange really. If it's safe to have football and then tennis crowds (and the airport travellers) in London. Yet it's not safe for MPs to return full-time to Parliament...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2021 18:54

In fairness, it was England fans I came across.

Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 18:55

And before anyone says 'London is young'. There are more elderly in London than anywhere else in the country.

SimonJT · 18/06/2021 18:55

My husband is at the football tonight with a friend, he said getting in was very well managed and waiting groups were kept far apart while waiting to go in.

It isn’t just Scottish fans, there are a lot of England fans hanging around as well.

allmycats · 18/06/2021 18:55

It is so stupid. There is a motorcycle meeting at Oulton Park shortly. All outdoor, no grandstands, long spread out track. Capacity of 35000 but only 4000 allowed. Seems very unfair.

newnortherner111 · 18/06/2021 18:56

It would have been no issue if Mr Johnson had put India on the red list at the same time as Pakistan and Bangladesh. As case numbers would now be very low.

Yes. The Delta aka the Johnson or Boris strain.
Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 18:57

Well that is me well and truly done. I will be avoiding the Covid rules wherever possible and carrying on my life as normal as possible.

Very true.
Arcadia · 18/06/2021 18:59

@MsFogi

There has been a very clear exemption for football throughout the pandemic - can't deprive the men of their football!
So true. And our kids are having all their school trips, transition days etc cancelled it's a fucking disgrace I'm beyond angry 😡
MrsFin · 18/06/2021 18:59

@Mindymomo

20,000 Scottish fans have come to London, although only 3,000 tickets were sold to them.
That's been described as a conservative (small c!) estimate.

It's all going to go horribly wrong later tonight Shock

MarianneUnfaithful · 18/06/2021 19:00

It is beyond ridiculous.

My DS, Uni year wrecked, has just had loads of things cancelled due to the delay in Freedom Day, businesses are collapsing,....no one bothers with masks any more, the people MOST likely to be spreading the Delta Variant are the ones least likely to be taking any precautions, while the rest of us suffer.

There is no logic.

I have ZERO respect for the Gvt.

Lockheart · 18/06/2021 19:01

I wish large groups like this just weren't allowed to gather and drink in public places regardless of covid. It makes life hell for those who actually live and work in London (or any major city where such large events take place).

We've cancelled plans tonight because we have no wish to try to negotiate our way through large crowds of drunken, riled up men. It's very intimidating for women just trying to go about their business. We shouldn't have to feel like we can't go out in our own city.

MrsFin · 18/06/2021 19:01

@AnyFucker

Yes, we are being played for fools. No dancing/singing at weddings but thousands of football fans chanting and shouting in each other’s faces is ok.

But no one has said it's ok, have they?

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 19:01

Yep 900 people a day going back forth to India in February alone, while we were all locked down, stay at home, save lives, travel was illegal for most of us 😡 While there was no lockdown in India, then extra planes put on so they could all get back so wouldn’t have to isolate in a hotel.

I’m not against people having fun but some of my daughters friends have been out in the West End today (15&16 year old girls) they were flashed at 3 separate times by drunken men in kilts.
I don’t care about jumping in fountains & lying in puddles but fgs flashing at young girls is way beyond having a laugh. I’m glad my daughter wasn’t with them.

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 19:02

@MrsFin but nobody is doing anything about it!

OP posts:
Clydie89 · 18/06/2021 19:02

All I've seen on the news is some sliding about in the rain and washing up liquid in a fountain... Far better than the usual English fans abroad chucking chairs at the local police surely??

Blame the govt for allowing this to happen, not the young fans who've been locked up the same as the rest of us and now there's a massive event on and they party because its legal! Yes they were advised against it and yes it's stupid to have travelled, but at least they have a chance of watching it properly in a pub rather than abiding by the stricter rules here. It was inevitable, especially for this match.

Hm2020 · 18/06/2021 19:04

I’m as central as you can get and it is carnage out there the videos I am getting sent from friends you would not believe police sirens non stop and the game hasn’t even started was thinking of meeting a few friends after for drinks but from what I’ve seen no way am I going out tonight.

MrsFin · 18/06/2021 19:04
@MrsFin but nobody is doing anything about it!
Police have been issued dispersal abilities, or whatever it's called OP. I foresee trouble ahead.

Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 19:05

More than 15,000 Londoners are dead from Covid. So far.

Many more suffering long term disability of Long Covid.

It's safe for football fans to come to London but not MPs? Why is it ok for these events but not a full return to Parliament? Could it possibly be that it's ok for the general public to be put at risk... but not MPs?

MistySkiesAfterRain · 18/06/2021 19:05

Is it wise with such a fast spreading virus? I'm pretty piddled off as my office was meant to open in July. In my local area, which is a tiny town, we had a truck with a sign saying COVID CASES ARE RISING IN YOUR AREA.

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 19:06

@Clydie89 they could’ve had friends round and watched at home! Yes the government should’ve done more but shouldn’t people also be responsible? All school children are expected to be, otherwise children are all selfish and should feel guilty for the rest of their Iives as one poster said on mumsnet.

When is this pandemic ending? Just 10 deaths for weeks
