Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

It's really busy in London. I don't understand why so many choose to to travel, weather looks better in Scotland too !

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 18/06/2021 19:22

@Lansonmaid

So annoying to see maskless football fans yelling their chops off (not going to dignify it with the word singing) when our church choir is limited to six people at any one time....getting seriously cheesed off with this now
Yes, and annoying so many people are annoyed with it who had no problems with far more people at BLM protests exactly a year ago...maskless and with violence thrown in.
MercyBooth · 18/06/2021 19:23

Meanwhile Notting Hill Carnival has been cancelled again even through thats not till the end of August.

Clydie89 · 18/06/2021 19:23

@Baileysforchristmas in certain parts of Scotland, having friends round to watch it would be against the rules, whereas travelling to London was only an advisory.

I don't agree in people travelling at all, I don't agree with it going ahead full stop.

For what it's worth it's pretty quiet so far in central Scotland so it's the rule breakers who've travelled, and you'll always get some.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 18/06/2021 19:23

@Mindymomo

20,000 Scottish fans have come to London, although only 3,000 tickets were sold to them.
And yet the Scottish authorities did nothing to stop them travelling.

Equally the Met police should have turned them round and sent them home.

It's an utter joke. They can bully women for going for a walk in a beauty spot, but heaven forbid that the men can't do what they want when it's football related.

Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 19:24

You won't be pleased to hear that UEFA want 2,500 VIPs to come from around the world to Wembley for the finals without having to quarantine.

Other governments would stand up for their populations and stand up to UEFA. Will Boris and co do the same? He's a fool if he thinks these officials have any respect for him. They respect strong leaders who can say no.

Lockheart · 18/06/2021 19:25

If you're referring to the incident with Derbyshire Police, I'm not sure how much help they'd be given that this is between Scotland and London...

looptheloopinahulahoop · 18/06/2021 19:25

@beigebrownblue

Yes. It is because football is male dominated. The patriarchy still rules. Blokes want their footy, the Eton boys, i.e. Boris and co will give it to them, regardless of a pandemic.
Yes. And now UEFA are apparently trying to blackmail the UK government into letting in all their hangers-on without quarantine for the knock-out stages.

Or the matches move to Budapest.

I bet the government caves this time, though they didn't for the Champions' League final.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/06/2021 19:25

Why come down without a ticket?

For the fight?

They could of course have watched it at home, but that wouldn't have offered the chance to brawl, pee and vomit in the streets

He did last time. Thats why the Champions League final went to Portugal. They wouldn't agree..but this time it's a bigger event soooo. Maybe not

Yes I am fully aware of that fact, funnily enough. My point was the police are only too keen to act when it's women, less so when it's to do with football and men.
MrsLCSofLichfield · 18/06/2021 19:27

I said to DH "Surely they all live in London anyway? Half of Scotland plus Rod Stewart lives there, right?" DH: "We-ell... I heard there's been planefuls flying down". If this is true, they are a right bunch of wallopers and should have taken a Strachan holiday instead*

*With apologies to those who don't watch Only An Excuse Grin

Doodlebug71 · 18/06/2021 19:27

@LetsGoFlyAKiteee

Get going if fanzones and/or times are different..but if no screens outside what do you do? Wander around and hope to find a pub and then what? Seems a wasted journey
You don't go in the first place. No ticket = stay home.
Lotsolove · 18/06/2021 19:28

If you put a football strip on you can get away with anything.

extravirginoliveoil · 18/06/2021 19:28

Wimbledon is going ahead. With a full crowd.

If money pays and faces fit, there is no issue. Same as the BBQ last week.

If the game was in Scotland, there would be thousands of a English fans in Scotland tonight. Folk are fed up. Sick of being lied to with one set of rules for one and another for someone else. Money talks.

They could have stopped the trains and planes going to London but then the fans would just have driven.

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2021 19:29

Many without tickets appear to have come down to run around my street and neighbouring yelling and chanting. They were pissed 5 hours ago ffs.

PurpleHoodie · 18/06/2021 19:31

Adopted Strictly from that point of view: a draw.

I have to brief, lead, control and debrief my teams differently, depending on different sporting results.

Also have to have an input into sports fans behaviour.
Good thing I like my job.

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 18/06/2021 19:32

Yes, because nobody else needs to use trains and planes apart from football fans. This sounds like a suggestion straight out of North Korea.

Unsure33 · 18/06/2021 19:32

Yes but they were not given permission to do this so there is a big difference . Very limited ticket sales .

How are the police going to cope with thousands of fans arriving that should not even be there ?

And what is the point they won’t be able to see the game .

PomRuns · 18/06/2021 19:32

Euston and Kings Cross were really busy, trains were packed.

I feel really feel the transport/hospitality staff who are will have increased risk now.

On the other hand, the smaller groups I saw, nice to see people having fun. Not so great seeing the crowds in L Sq.

JediGnot · 18/06/2021 19:35

@BamboozledandBefuddled

And people wonder why I refuse to take restrictions seriously anymore. Put a stop to things like this and I might change my attitude.
Translation - other people are selfish scum so I am going to revel in my own selfish scumminess.

That incident was well-reported and commented on locally. The women travelled from Ashby to Foremarke reservoir. They shouldn't have done that at the time. The women's haste to have photos taken (change of clothes and so on later) was documented. Took a couple of minutes to find the articles and photos at that time. I read local pages around the UK, and that was documented on a few of them.

I do agree with the sentiment about police bullying women in general. The Sarah Everard vigil was heavily policed and very badly handled. The Rangers (?) crowd a few days prior to that? Very different approach from the police.

Women: know your place. Shut up and stay put.. and stay quiet. Fight amongst yourselves, by all means, but STFU.

@Doyoumind shocking. Gets more & more ridiculous.
Indiana2021 · 18/06/2021 19:36

It’s a tinder box. The Scottish fans aren’t in London to be amenable and chummy, they’ve already been pictured throwing beer at people and using aggressive language.
