Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

It does feel strange that the rules are only for those not attending sport venues !

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/06/2021 18:35

Download Festival happening as well..as a pilot and on a smaller scale. Beautiful weather for it though!

EachandEveryone · 18/06/2021 18:37

Ive been to Borough Market today and I have to admit I loved seeing them running around in their kilts. Such a happy atmosphere it was nice to see the pubs busy. I was quite tearful. And ive played by the rules from the beginning.

notturningintopowerranger · 18/06/2021 18:37

I’ve been walking through the crowds all day - refuse to step into the road for them and they’ve all politely let me through. I’m impressed with these young Scots having fun.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2021 18:37

I understand the restrictions inside these big stadiums , but outside its carnage.
How can this be a good thing ?
I'm just a bit puzzled by it all

Somarefuser · 18/06/2021 18:38

Imagine how much money could be raised if the Stunning and Brave Metropolitan Police enforce strict Covid rules on yelling, singing, clustering indoors without masks, urinating in public...
Millions.
Place your bets on whether the police will even try.
Scots fans are not a soft target.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2021 18:39

I think their fans are brilliant, it just feels wrong that it's allowed to go ahead!

MarshaBradyo · 18/06/2021 18:40

I’d be ok with it if someone focussed their attention on children and what they need

ClarisseMcClellan · 18/06/2021 18:40

@Mrsjayy

This is entirely the fault of the Scottish fans, travelling down in huge numbers when they had no tickets to the match or indeed to any organised screenings. Bloody idiots

I'm a Scottish person and I y agree with this . They were "asked" not to travel yet there they are sliding down the streets in the rain trying to get in pubs to watch the game. Its so embarrassing and idiotic!

I'm not Scottish but was talking to someone at work about this. The rest of the sensible population must be watching from behind their hands and cringing with embarassmemt

Have they no idea of how to behave? Is this normal behaviour north of the border of a Saturday night

It's like watching prisoners being let out after years of solitary confinement

Forstarters · 18/06/2021 18:41

Having had a good friend of mine just have to postpone her wedding for the 4th time - this is just appalling. How is this ok? Fuck this

StrongerThanA90sTrend · 18/06/2021 18:41

Why on earth would you even bother to travel all that way when you aren't even going to the match?! 20,000 people?! What?! I don't get it. Just watch it at home!

spacefrog35 · 18/06/2021 18:41

Although everyone attending has to have a ticket and a negative test within the preceding 24 hours as well as agreeing to a regime of testing after the event so not quite the same as 17,500 football fans wandering aimlessly around the pubs of London.
AdoptedBumpkin · 18/06/2021 18:42

It might have been better to cancel all trains from Scotland to London for one day.

the80sweregreat · 18/06/2021 18:43

Why come down without a ticket? ..
I'm bemused by it all

MagicSummer · 18/06/2021 18:43

Everything stops for the great god football - everybody knows that! All rules waived, all policing dumbed down. I loathe football and every single thing to do with it.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 18/06/2021 18:46

OMG, people having fun! The sky will fall.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 18/06/2021 18:46

Get going if fanzones and/or times are different..but if no screens outside what do you do? Wander around and hope to find a pub and then what? Seems a wasted journey

Chudney · 18/06/2021 18:47

Having attended the funeral of a close friend this week where numbers were limited to 30, this makes me so cross!

This. Can't stop football. Imagine if people were as passionate as that about things that really matter....

I remember when the Sarah vigil took place. Police creating a situation, then arresting people... compare that with the football supporters a few days previous...

MarshaBradyo · 18/06/2021 18:47

It’s fine. If only it were not so uneven amongst groups
WeAllHaveWings · 18/06/2021 18:48

@the80sweregreat

I'm beyond furious , but not surprised. If it was English fans in Scotland , I'm sure that Nicola Sturgeon would be saying something about it too! Madness. ( remember not to dance or sing at a wedding though)
Regardless of where the match was held there would have been thousands of fans from the away country travelling.

yes, sturgeon would very likely be saying something about it, and so should Johnson.

Parky04 · 18/06/2021 18:48

It's great to see. Love to see people having fun!

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 18:50

@osbertthesyrianhamster that’s fine people having fun but it seems only certain people. There are many healthy children with a negative test under house arrest for 10 days 😡 Not allowed to sing or dance at weddings. I won’t be isolating unless I have a pcr positive test from now on.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 18/06/2021 18:50

It was inevitable. It could have been managed by having a free ticketed event in a large park that needed either a vaccination or a negative test result to unlock.

Now the Met will have to police a rambuctious and mostly group crowd, with no access to puns (still all seated only) and no facilities.

It would have been galling to make those allowances when so many others are sacrificing so much, but it would at least on a public health scale have been better.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 18/06/2021 18:51

Group = drunk and puns = pubs
