Was it wise to have a football match in a pandemic?

I can’t get too het up about the Scottish fans but the sheer hypocrisy of this entire situation is driving me mad. Boris et al has a lavish bbq and no matter how many on MN say it was within the rules why were the press banned in that case ? The photos of the bbq certainly don’t match the distanced photo shoot of the leaders - we were meant to see one image but not the other as photographers were banned - so if everything was Covid compliant why were photographers banned - basically because it wasn’t. Similiarly Ascot today those attending having a lovely time - massed together no mask to be seen. Couldn’t care less but in the meantime the young are expected to give up leaving celebrations, proms, freshers week, graduations etc etc and they are just expected to ‘suck it up’. I am at the stage now when I am wondering whether to just give up and accept this is it now but not quite there yet

I’m glad i’m not in London tonight, I’m quite happy to watch it at home

I have never said there is a travel ban in force right now. I said it it effective Monday.

You did, and that's the post about one not yet in force that I refer to.

ButteringMyArse · 18/06/2021 20:59

Cross post extravirgin! Nvm.

KevinTheGoat · 18/06/2021 21:02

@Lostinacloud

What’s this? The BBC are reporting on a large crowd gathering in London? I’m gobsmacked! Let’s see if they make any mention of the next lockdown protest. Haven’t seen much, if any, reporting on crowds estimated to have been 5 times larger than this so far.
Which is completely pointless because lockdown is being eased off anyway.

@BamboozledandBefuddled

And people wonder why I refuse to take restrictions seriously anymore. Put a stop to things like this and I might change my attitude.
Exactly Just crazy
Ledkr · 18/06/2021 21:09

They put up fan zones in big cities then told them not to go 😳

KevinTheGoat · 18/06/2021 21:10

Would also like to point out that I am a female football fan - my name is partly a reference to an internet meme and partly a reference to one of my favourite footballers. Kevin Pressman. It's not just blokes who watch football (I've got Radio 5 on as I type this).

I will never accept how our freedom was taken away from us so easily Anyone who can’t see what is going on, needs to come outside and take a good look
Ledkr · 18/06/2021 21:11

And nottinghill cancelled too.

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2021 21:12

I too am a female football fan. Watching as I engage - it’s not (yet?) an enthralling match.

shewalkslikerihanna · 18/06/2021 21:13

@canary1

Disgusted that this is going ahead but I can’t watch my child’s sports day. And plenty of kids sent home to isolate. The school - related rules should have changed before adults watching football. This pandemic really has shown how many people, perhaps often men who make rules, don’t give a damn about the kids.
Im seriously thinking of going to the June 26 London protest I have never done anything like this in my life and I want to do it now
KevinTheGoat · 18/06/2021 21:15

Oh G-d, the conspiracy theorists have arrived. How many posts before the obligatory mention of the Jews, sorry, George Soros? I think the government are handling it badly but remember how reluctant Johnson was to lock down and how eager he was to reopen everything.

shewalkslikerihanna · 18/06/2021 21:18

@Dentistlakes

The Scottish fans shouldn’t have travelled without a ticket to the game. That said, I’m not a football fan so probably don’t understand their motivation. I just hope they behave and things stay good natured.
I can well understand why they’ve travelled down Because they’ve lived under a dictator for too long
shewalkslikerihanna · 18/06/2021 21:18

It’s a wonder the Welsh aren’t there as well

There's no one quite like Boris, eh? Grin
Jaxhog · 18/06/2021 21:23

This will only cause another lockdown. I guess football matters more than people's lives.

Oblomov21 · 18/06/2021 21:27

Why did 20k fans travel down if only 3k had tickets? Hmm

olidora63 · 18/06/2021 21:27

TBH ...I actually love the fact that young people are having fun ...enjoy!

Baileysforchristmas · 18/06/2021 21:28

@Jaxhog well I won’t be following the rules anymore, that’s it for me.

it's getting better Grin

I kind of feel for the fans. They've been encouraged really to book flights and trains and coaches as well as hotel accommodation all under the eye of our inglorious leaders knowing that only 3000 tickets were available to the actual stadium. Now they're here and spending money all day in the bars and shops and no surprise they've taken over the streets. Blame the authorities for facilitating the circus not the fans.

Againstmachine · 18/06/2021 21:32

The problem is a number of fans behave appalling with flares and suchlike.
