We're going to have another lockdown aren't we?

So yesterday we got very quick messages for 2nd vaccine 4 weeks after first and a lot of people were saying that's quick...also today school has said they're cancelling all trips too due coronavirus. I guess there's fear it will get a lot worse...honestly think it will be another year or more before things get better...

No I don't think so. Hospitals are coping fine and that's the important factor that makes lockdowns more likely

Pootle40 · 17/06/2021 15:27

No, ain't gonna happen.

Pootle40 · 17/06/2021 15:28

@Sparklingbrook

We need one continuous thread for this. Titled ‘Coronavirus Doom and Gloom come for a wallow in it’ or something.

No were not very far off the (determined) acceptable level of “endemic” disease that places such as New York have set as the bar for unlocking, and we won’t want to lag too far behind now they’re opening back up.

Backofbeyond50 · 17/06/2021 15:57

Nah. Some small restrictions during the Winter maybe but we are over the worst.

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2021 16:04

I love Dr Campbell on YouTube. He seems to know what’s what. He’s doing a great job of explaining everything.
Do t use MN as a source of Covid info. Too many people with agendas.

AgeLikeWine · 17/06/2021 16:07

No, I don’t think so.

All the briefing from government to the media is now that once all adults have been offered at least one dose of vaccine, ie 19 July, restrictions will be removed and society will have to learn to live with covid. Chris Whitty said so himself at the press conference on Monday.

MollyGaves · 17/06/2021 16:10

I don’t think so, the vaccine programs working well and this should bring the worst cases down and hopefully keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed.

What I do think will happen is we will be expected to wear masks for quite some time to come and perhaps there will be some other rules or restrictions. I hope it does all start to ease soon as I’ve barely been out of my front door for 15 months. I went to a small supermarket near me the other night for the first time since February 2020, hardly a soul there and I felt like a kid in a sweet shop.

Suranjeep · 17/06/2021 16:10
@chocolateicecream why?
I think we will, and it once again will be because of the hysteria from the press.

Look now at how all the news outlets are shouting about 4675489474327* million cases today, doubing every .16th of a second etc

The Govermnment will get wrapped up in this as the likes of Rigby will start asking gotcha questions and they'll need to react. Their reaction will be lockdown so that in the future they cant be accused of acting too slow again.

 • or whatever it is.

Have you seriously not been to a shop for 15 months?

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 17/06/2021 16:11

No. They are bringing jab forward etc as fast as possible to avoid one!

Both doses of each of the jabs works.

Wannabangbang · 17/06/2021 16:13

Without children being vaccinated and this thing still spreading rapidly again i reckon so but not like last time. It will be minimal i think

VettiyaIruken · 17/06/2021 16:13

I expect there'll be some short ones, local ones, for a year or so. unless the virus mutates into one where people are dropping dead in the street I honestly can't see another nationwide lockdown. But, you never know. I remember the thread on here where the OP told posters to stop scaremongering and being stupid because a lockdown would never happen.

That was in the morning.

That afternoon ...🤣

Mintjulia · 17/06/2021 16:14

No. They've pushed the further relaxation of restrictions out 4 weeks. In that time, they're trying to give all adults at least one jab. Then they'll try to get all over 12s vaccinated before next winter.
Then combined flu and updated covid jab next December.

No further lockdown.

Sweak · 17/06/2021 16:19

I really don't think so @Suranjeep

I think it would be worse for Johnson to go back on the last lockdown being 'the last lockdown.' There are only so many u turns a man can survive!
And so many sections of the media were anti lockdown and/or desperate to lift them really early on.

The treasury don't have the funds. It's only going to happen if hospitalisations are out of control again

Cornettoninja · 17/06/2021 16:24

@Sweak I think you’ve made some astute observations although I have to say I don’t find it particularly comforting that you’re most likely right and our stubborn cabinet will be reluctant to pull back once they’ve set the wheels in motion. I think my memories of the January 24hr backtrack on keeping schools open are too fresh - that caused some chaos and distress in this house!

HeronLanyon · 17/06/2021 16:24

There are quite a few media stories this afternoon abkut possible increased restrictions. Today’s figures don’t help.
I can see it as a possibility but let’s hope to god not.

Suranjeep · 17/06/2021 16:26

The press U-Turn as much as the PM

Last March they demanded Lockdown. Then Kuesnburg, Peston, Rigby etc demanded to end it and kept pushing that. when it ended they kept suggesting it was too soon. Then they demanded another one etc etc and kept whipping up hysteria for another one

HarebrightCedarmoon · 17/06/2021 16:27

What I want to know is if the completely vaccinated are allowed to travel in August, what will happen with their kids who haven't been offered a vaccine yet?

Sweak · 17/06/2021 16:35

@Suranjeep yes I agree the press do demand action then demand removal of restrictions. They do whip up a frenzy to sell papers etc

I just don't think Johnson is going to respond to case numbers only. It's hospitalisations/NHS coping thats key. I can't see him surviving politically if we end up in lockdown again (unless there's a new variant evading vaccines and he had a robust border policy).

Thanks @Cornettoninja I agree with you actually. Say if there was some new vaccine evading highly deadly variant, much worse than our current situation..I think it would take him an absolute age to respond, by that point being too late.

So I'm summary no OP I don't agree there will be another lockdown.

justanotherneighinparadise · 17/06/2021 16:37

I’m not convinced. I think it’s less about cases now and more about hospital admissions.

HotWeather · 17/06/2021 16:51

I can't see another lockdown unless we get a vaccine resistant variant. So far the vaccines are very effective so no reason to lockdown.

Legoninjago1 · 17/06/2021 16:54

@Countrylane

No. This vaccine push is to get over the hump and stay there. Thank fck.
Quite.
Suranjeep · 17/06/2021 16:54

@Sweak the Government shouldnt respond to case numbers, but we know they arent following the science they follow the hysteria

Sweak · 17/06/2021 17:02

@Suranjeep I'm no fan of this government. Believe me. However I'm afraid I don't agree that they are responding to 'hysteria'.

The current extension to restrictions is a case in point. The media proclaiming it 'freedom day', the pressure from the anti lockdown Tories...but he did still extend it. Obviously this comes at an economic and social cost. The modelling suggested 250-500 lives a day may be saved by doing so. That modelling came from scientists not the media. I don't think that scientists are hysterical.

Just to note I don't want to derail the thread by getting into the merits/disadvantages of the extension to current restrictions. That's a big can of worms! I was just giving that as an example of how I don't think they respond to hysteria.
