We're going to have another lockdown aren't we?

So yesterday we got very quick messages for 2nd vaccine 4 weeks after first and a lot of people were saying that's quick...also today school has said they're cancelling all trips too due coronavirus. I guess there's fear it will get a lot worse...honestly think it will be another year or more before things get better...

Actually @suranjeep I think that whilst we’re still observing the real life efficacy of vaccines case numbers do have relevance but the boundaries are shifting so whilst we may have previously seen an alarming rise in hospital admissions followed by deaths at c19-20k cases in the winter this may increase to ten times that before we see an issue because of vaccines. All being well we won’t actually see that at all because cases will be slowed down by vaccines (and possibly some restrictions like isolations for contacts) so the virus simply won’t be able to circulate fast enough.

MaMelon · 17/06/2021 17:07

If enough people get vaccinated soon, if we get the right level of herd immunity, if we don’t get any resistant variants and if we continue to wear masks/distance/wash our hands/etc then we should be OK - we might face local restrictions but hopefully we’ll avoid full lockdown.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 17/06/2021 17:11

Agree I can't see why at the moment we would need one.
I think winter coming is the biggest test? Doesn't seem to be any movement on improving air ventilation anywhere, certainly not in school so I guess this will be the big test.
Even now ventilation is not pushed, no regulations anywhere seem to mention it

I'm making my Christmas plans under the assumption that we'll be in full lockdown.

The flu season is set to be worse than ever this year and the Nepal Variant is already on the loose.

Quartz2208 · 17/06/2021 19:49

NannyandJohn how can you live like that? Planning and assuming for the worst all the time.

What we need now is to hope, live in hope and take the hits as and when they come because we know for the most part we can.

Here is Chris Whitty

So either we will have a very significant Covid surge, people will minimise their contacts and we will have less respiratory viruses or people will get back to a more normal life, there will be some Covid but on top of that we will go back to having a flu surge, an RSV surge in children and so on.

So I think we need to be aware and braced for the fact that the coming winter may well be quite a difficult one, not probably on the scale of the last one ... which was really the worst I think any of us can remember, but still quite a significant one. We as the NHS have to brace ourselves for that.

He is Mr Pessimistic himself and I dont read lockdown into that - but I take it you do?

Sweak · 17/06/2021 19:50

Nanny - why is the flu season going to be worse? Have you read that somewhere?

I would have thought would be better as we will still be using hand sanitizer and more robust with cleaning in public places. Surely there will also be some people who wear masks (even if just through choice)

Sweak · 17/06/2021 19:51

Is that flu thing due to a lack of immunity as less caught it this year?

MarshaBradyo · 17/06/2021 19:52

No

Are you this negative in real life? Personally I find it so draining being around negative people.

You surely aren't being serious

Why would you be making Christmas plans of any type a few days before Midsummer day?

Were you such a doom junkie before covid? I cant imagine a life lived revelling in finding the worst case scenario in everything. Are you ever postive about anything?

You do that

😂

MarshaBradyo · 17/06/2021 19:59

What does lockdown Christmas planning entail?

Extra window boards something else

Adifferentstory2 · 17/06/2021 20:03

Not unless there are new variants - we’re doing grand with the vaccines, deaths are low and hospitals not too busy. Yes things are rising but not like before. There will definitely be restrictions but not full scale lockdown.

Villanelle17 · 17/06/2021 20:03

No

Adifferentstory2 · 17/06/2021 20:04

I should say, hospitals are rammed but not with Covid. Also, new variants that outwit the vaccine.

MrsHastingslikethebattle · 17/06/2021 20:06

They couldn't justify it once the over 20/30s are fully vaccinated.

The daily deaths and hospital admissions are low enough as it is.

People wouldn't stand for it.

BakedBeansBang · 17/06/2021 20:12

Why are some people saying it isn't a respiratory disease? I was surprised by this, and have googled, and every source (including gov.uk and John Hopkins university) says either it is a respiratory disease or a respiratory illness.

MackenzieT · 17/06/2021 20:23

Cases are rising fast but NOT deaths and hospital admissions

Sky yesterday said admissions were up 48%?

MackenzieT · 17/06/2021 20:26

It was a quote from Hancock apparently - but then again, he is 'totally f*cking hopeless'...

Pootle40 · 17/06/2021 20:28

Admissions WITH Covid. I.e. I could be going in to get my foot chopped off but if I tested positive within the last 28 days I am a COVID hospital admission. But I'm not really. But I'd be in the numbers. Croc of shit it's called
Summerof74 · 17/06/2021 20:29

I think we may have localised lockdowns. The jab doesn't protect us fully. My best friend and her husband have had both jabs and yet they have caught covid. Both been really ill in bed for over a week!

Localised doesn’t really work. Think we’ve moved away from this
yellowsubmarines · 17/06/2021 20:30

My friends, neighbours and co-workers weren't adhering to any of the other lockdowns so no I don't think we should or could go into another full one. It's just not enforceable and I'm fed up following the rules and watching others do as they wish. I've had both vacs now and I'm prepared to go back to as normal as possible even if that means keeping to some restrictions like masks.
Although I was in Tesco the other day and a woman was going mental yelling at everyone that they were 'too close' and 'get back' even though they were at least 2m away from her and wearing masks. People like that shouldn't be going out to public spaces if they are that worried. She could get groceries delivered, click and collect, use the council service or any of a number of other options.
Interesting the extremes, some people are completely terrified and others are acting as if covid doesn't exist.

Sweak · 17/06/2021 20:32

@Pootle40 I don't buy such a large number to be explained like that. Unless it's a medical emergency you aren't going to get admitted with a positive test are you. Routine ops etc would be rescheduled

yellowsubmarines · 17/06/2021 20:34

What I mean to say is that if people are going to go out then they must accept that other people will be out as well. We can't control what everyone else does, that is a risk of going out in public. Unfortunately there are some people who don't wear masks or respect the 2m boundary and that is also a risk of going into public spaces.
