Not sure how Boris can stand up tonight and ask us to wait 'just another few weeks' after his antics this weekend.

Nor after seeing the scenes at countless pubs where people were celebrating the footy results

I'm 100% done now

If the Delta variant is just a cold that means the coronavirus is downgrading itself into a cold and I'm certainly not getting a vaccine for a cold!

But you know full well it isn’t ‘just a cold’ any more than original and alpha were ‘just a cough’.

The symptoms of mild disease with delta are more likely to include the symptoms typical of a bad cold, the same as the symptoms of mild disease with other variants are more likely to include a persistent cough and loss of taste/smell.

It’s still a virus that hospitalises a significant proportion of those who are infected (recently running at a pretty steady 5% - much better than the rate we saw with the winter wave but that’s probably reflective of the age profile of those currently being infected as a result of not being vaccinated yet, and less severe disease in most of those who have been).

Which colds have a 5% hospitalisation rate for predominantly under 50s, out of interest?

I wasn’t talking about you @DeathByWalkies.

I was referring to people in groups affected by circumstances like self-employment, single parents, unscrupulous employers pressurising them, not qualifying for any isolation payment etc. I’ve no idea if you fall into any of those groups or not. I can’t recall your posts and I don’t really pay that much attention to usernames 🤷‍♀️

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57467051

@QwertyGirly India has a population of 1,393,409,038 according to google so the cases there that you're quoting are 0.02% of their population.

People are hanging onto their fear like a safety blanket and it's pitiful.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/06/2021 13:03

- I live in a flat, and there have been cases where the T&T app has got confused and thought that people in neighbouring flats were a close contact. It works on Bluetooth, which doesn't take any account of solid walls. There have been cases of people being told to self isolate because a neighbour they never speak to has covid www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-54418278

This is one of the reasons I deleted the app. I am not isolating if my neighbour, who works at an airport so is probably high risk, gets Covid.

QwertyGirly · 16/06/2021 13:08

@randomkey123 that's the number of deaths, not of cases darling.

And reputable newspapers say it's probably 10 times that number as the records only show people who died in hospitals.

Oh dear.

I fall into two of those categories. Relevant posts are over the last 2-3 pages so not far back.

Also people not getting on board with Track and Trace and the Covid App but then blaming the Govt. Giving false phone numbers in shops and venues, repeatedly telling people to delete the app.

Went to a restaurant after they opened.last year. Left our contact email. Which the restaurant then went on to use for marketing purposes. Since everything opened up lately I've been to a few places. Seem to have started getting an awful lot of unknown numbers calling again.

No ones getting my number from now on because I don't trust them any more

BonnieDundee · 16/06/2021 19:06

Are you living in terror at being dragged off to prison for posting your opinion on the internet for thousands of people to see? Do you fear that your friends and family are secretly feeding information to the police to build a file on you? No? It’s nothing like the stasi.

I'm living in fear of losing my job because I'm not having the vaccine

I don’t know if you’ve missed the rest of the internet but people are constantly berating one another or telling everyone how they’re superior and why everyone should do things their way. Your free to tell them exactly why you don’t agree and do whatever you feel is right irl = not stasi-like.

I haven't said I'm superior to anyone. I just have a different.opinion to you

People weren’t fined for getting a coffee, they were fined for breaching emergency pandemic restrictionswhilstthey were getting a coffee.

Derbyshire police did indeed fine 2 women for having a coffee (AKA a picnic)

People report people breaking the law all the time or would you rather people didn’t report crimes when they are aware of them? Have you spent decades outraged at Crimewatch and their ‘stasi-like’ approach on national television encouraging members of the public to report criminals

No, but until March 2020 I never heard of people being reported to the police for leaving their houses more than once a day or being out for longer than an hour (which wasn't actually even a rule).

Cressida Dick encouraged social disapproval precisely because she said the police wouldn’t be getting involved with low level stuff. Not particularly stasi-like to basically say ‘we won’t be responding to calls about people meeting up in their homes for Christmas dinner - you tell them if you think they’re dicks’.

If you want to live in that sort of society, crack on. It's not for me.

Can you provide your source for that, please?

Prof Oliver Johnson from Bristol Uni has been keeping track of the hospitalisation rate as a proportion of cases and reporting regularly via his Twitter thread. He takes a 10-day displacement from case reporting based on what we saw in previous waves. 5% appears to be holding pretty steady.

But also you probably don’t need a source for it - you can do it yourself with the data from the coronavirus dashboard.

JassyRadlett · 16/06/2021 20:29

Twitter account, not thread. He has multiple threads on the subject.

PurpleLorry · 18/06/2021 05:47

Just to update the thread as I posted about my daughter earlier

She does have Covid as does the rest of her house bar the student doctor who already had it and was vaccinated twice

They had all had one Pfizer jab. What they were told the issue is with this strain (delta) is that one jab is not stopping you getting it hence their rush to get the over 40s jabbed twice. Though it appears you may get it less severely after one or two jabs.

She had a temperature for 3 days, headache, tight chest and only lost her sense of taste and smell today so it does have a different progression to earlier strains.

It took days for their tests to come back so I suspect there's a bit of a lag with case numbers and they are in one of the hot spots! She has also been super careful throughout because of her asthma so maybe it is getting easier to catch which I think viruses often do as they progress?

I also can't wait to get back to normal though - especially mask wearing which I hate!

PrincessNutNuts · 18/06/2021 13:56

@PurpleLorry I hope they're all on the mend now.

It definitely seems like "a thing" this time that pretty much the whole household gets it.

I hate masks too. I get terrible "maskne". I finally got desperate enough to send some photos of it to the GP who has prescribed antibiotic gel. He says this is a common "thing" too.

What a couple of years we are all having.

exiledfromcornwall · 18/06/2021 15:32

Not surprised by people saying "I'm done" when we see scenes like this in Leicester Square today

Delatron · 18/06/2021 15:36

Well yes. Kids school trips cancelled for the second year running, transition days all cancelled (again). But all those football fans in London tonight will have a great time.

MercyBooth · 18/06/2021 16:31

Notting Hill Carnival cancelled. Even though its not till the end of August.

Wimbledon and Royal Ascot ok though.

Our school is still running school day trips. One year group has already been on one this week.

Just saying.

exiledfromcornwall · 18/06/2021 16:42

It's the police standing around indulgently that gets me. Anyone remember a certain peaceful vigil held by women in the wake of the Sarah Everard murder, and how that went?

Delatron · 18/06/2021 16:43

Yes @RedToothBrush

Day trips but not the residentials.
Well my crappy primary isn’t. I know some areas are but the point still stands. Many school years have missed so much. They won’t get this time back.

Even the most callous person has to understand that it’s very distressing when your child is upset to miss their school trips/inductions days/leavers do yet we can see all those people having a lovely time at Ascot, the football, Wimbledon.

Children are disproportionately affected by this and it’s gone on too long. But at least the posh people get to go to Ascot and bet on horses eh? Because that’s vital...

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 18/06/2021 21:58

@exiledfromcornwall that tweet has really pissed me off... Angry

Workyticket · 18/06/2021 23:33

Yep agree we are all mugs and being played for fools, turn off your test and trace, stop testing healthy children twice a week, let’s all get back to normal, less testing less daily Covid numbers. Europe aren’t testing as much as us but we are penalised for our high numbers, it’s ridiculous
