Not sure how Boris can stand up tonight and ask us to wait 'just another few weeks' after his antics this weekend.

Nor after seeing the scenes at countless pubs where people were celebrating the footy results

I'm 100% done now

@Bertiebiscuit

Stop being pathetic - we can go out, drink and eat out, meet up with friends now - what else are whinging about? You won't die without huge events or foreign holidays - grow up, get vaxxed, test yourself twice a week and keep the rules otherwise we will all be in proper lock down very soon dying from the Delta variant
I'm going abroad. That's the only time I'll be testing. Testing people who aren't ill. Nope, not going to do that except to get some sun in a place with no restrictions.
bumbleymummy · 15/06/2021 19:33

@JediGnot my reason for not having it is that I’m low risk and I don’t tend to have vaccines for things that I don’t need protection against. I’m fairly satisfied with my lack of selfishness and intelligence, thanks. I give little weight to the opinions of random people on the internet who have never met me and are quick to judge based on very little. Says more about your intelligence than mine Wink

ellyeth · 15/06/2021 19:39

So far we have had the original virus, the South African variant, the Brazilian variant, the Kent variant, and now we have the Indian variant. Are we just going to go on like this, ad infinitum, because the signs are that the virus is adept at mutating?

Meanwhile, NHS waiting lists are getting longer and longer and people with significant health issues are not getting the treatment they urgently need - and it is very difficult to see a GP face-to-face. Our children have already been seriously affected, not just by losing out on schooling and socialising with friends, but on seeing their wider families. Universities are in a mess too. Our Court system was already in a terrible state due to Conservative cuts but now people might be waiting years to have their cases heard. Most people who have elderly relatives are reporting that their mental and physical state has deteriorated significantly. More and more businesses are hanging on by a thread - and this further restriction will probably be the end for many of them.

It isn't "just another four weeks". It's months and months of living a very unnatural life, with the promise that as soon as significant numbers of people have been vaccinated life will return to normal or at least near normal. I doubted my grandson when he said " It will be "just be patient and adhere to the rules, get yourself vaccinated and soon we will be back to normal." But, just wait and see", he said, "we won't. It will be just a bit longer, and a bit longer and a bit longer." It looks like he was right.

bumbleymummy · 15/06/2021 19:45

Yes, it will always be ‘just a bit longer’ because the goal keeps changing. - flatten the curve, reduce strain on NHS, vaccinate vulnerable, vaccinate all adults, vaccinate teens... boosters for adults... vaccinate young children... and so on. And anyone who doesn’t continue to comply will be called selfish and stupid.

I’m so sick of people saying oh it’s only 4 more weeks! That 4 weeks is on the end of 16 months and might be the difference of a business staying afloat or not. Might the difference of someone losing everything their house marriage and unfortunately their own life. People are so selfish thinking if they’re ok it’s not a problem but it’s not ok for everyone! Those at risk have been offered a jab so now we need to fully get back to life. Yes some may still die but people die every day that is why we need to live while we can!

FlyLight · 15/06/2021 19:55

@DeathByWalkies sorry you're in that situation, some people really have no clue whatsoever how others have been affected by this. The 'just follow the rules/stay the fuck at home' brigade are always the ones with secure jobs who haven't been particularly affected.

BonnieDundee · 15/06/2021 19:56

i praised you for being a good person for getting the vaccine when you clearly have a tendency to think it would suit you personally not to have it.

Unbelievable. Feel like I'm living in the former East Germany with the stasi deciding who is good and who is bad depending on whether they have done what the government wants. Utter madness

donaldbump · 15/06/2021 19:57

I’m wondering what will happen with schools and occasional outbreaks. It’s massively disruptive having to self isolate for 10 days each time. How long will that go on for in the future?? Currently taking a test doesn’t cut it as you could still be contagious. Is that it forever in schools? How will that work?

donaldbump · 15/06/2021 19:58

I mean when a positive case is known about

cantkeepawayforever · 15/06/2021 20:01

For me, it is about opening SUSTAINABLY.

There is absolutely no point in opening up nightclubs and large events for a few weeks, then having to backtrack, shut down again, and even go back to more than the current level of restrictions. That's in nobody's interests.

People may say 'well, just open up then, and DON'T lock down again'. There is a point, however, at which public consensus WOULD say 'it's out of control again, we do need restrictions' (or, perhaps earlier 'it's out of control again, I am going to restrict myself again and cancel the concert, theatre, event etc bookings for mass events).

Pausing to get vaccinations to a level where getting out of control becomes a more and more distant prospect, so all re-openings are fairly long-term sustainable and income-generating doesn't seem entirely daft.

SamW98 · 15/06/2021 20:03

@DeathByWalkies

I feel absolutely gutted for you. many of my mates work in the entertainment industry and several are event promotors and they are struggling after 15 months with no income.
They had planned a few events over the next few weeks which have now been rolled over but the whole sector is being decimated.
They've even planned outdoor events as we are told this is safer but the restrictive rules make it difficult to put on anything without losing money

Its soul destroying and anyone who says 'oh its only another 4 weeks' has no idea of how badly every week that the arts, entertainment and culture industry remains closed, how many are throwing in the towel

I fear for how little will be left after this is eventually over

My guess is that self-isolation of the fully vaccinated will stop once full vaccination has been made available to all.

In schools, it is tricky because, while 12-18 year olds have an approved vaccine, primary schools don't. My guess is that primary school isolations will stop once all CV and CEV children have been vaccinated, and isolation will only be for the positive case itself, with school closures for a serious outbreak (as has historically happened to some schools every year for e.g. norovirus).

Which, I don't know about you, bumble means the square root of FA to me. Ooo, 'selfish' and 'stupid' from random on the internet, like, who cares?

MNHQ deleting my post and clearly shilling for the lockdown fetishists Hmm

UnChatNoir · 15/06/2021 20:11

So sorry to hear that @DeathByWalkies

Did you not stop to think about people's jobs and livelihoods before writing your nasty little comment @Bertiebiscuit ?

BonnieDundee · 15/06/2021 20:12

Just plain nasty

No surprise there
nannykatherine · 15/06/2021 20:17

@MRex

A bunch of double vaccinated people being tested every day, of course the G7 were all safe at an outdoor event. If they weren't able to feel safe at that point then we're all really screwed.

Waiting a few weeks to allow those in their 20s who have not been offered a jab yet to get a jab and build some level of immunity seems fair to me. They have gone through the same restrictions and deserve the same protections as older people. Letting cases reduce will also protect children, who can't be jabbed and also don't want covid. Masks are actually about protecting your fellow citizens, and aren't mandatory outside. Enjoy the sunny weather and be patient for a few weeks.

This ☝️

Nightclubs can be opened and shut with similar levels of notice as pubs and restaurants have had - you need an eye on issues like perishable stock and staff availability, but they're fundamentally very similar from an opening and closing point of view.

Large events, on the other hand, require
a) long lead times - it could be 6 months for a smaller one, but 12 months++ for a large festival.
b) the government to give timescales well in advance, so that they have some dates to work to
c) insurance cover - at the moment there's nothing on the market that would cover losses relating to a last minute cancellation when all the irrecoverable money has been spent

At the moment, the majority of events that would normally have been scheduled into my professional diary have either

  • never had a date announced because the organisers felt there wasn't enough certainty to even get that far
  • have been postponed to 2022 - for annual events like festivals this is effectively a cancellation, and for the weddings I had in my diary this is now meaning that I'm turning away new business because 2020/21 couples are now occupying a 2022/23 date.
  • have been cancelled altogether
and then there were some regular weekly / monthly community markets which have simply disappeared. I think the organisers have decided to do other things with their time.

At the moment the complete lack of certainty, ability to plan 6-12 months in advance and insurance cover means that even if big events were technically allowed tomorrow, in a great many cases they just wouldn't happen until at least 2022 now anyway.

TheVampiresWife · 15/06/2021 20:23

@osbertthesyrianhamster

So if anyone not wearing a mask indoors or within 2 metres from me doesn't want a smack in the face, they'd best be fast on their feet around me.

Yeah, right, you'd really risk criminal prosecution for assault for someone not wearing a mask indoors or within 2 metres of you Hmm. Sure. Some people are exempt from masking wearing. Some people have impairments that mean they can't distance well (guidedogs, for example, are not trained in such a fashion).

Losing a loved one (I'm a bereaved parent myself) does not give you the right to assault people in any way.

This.

@numberoneson I'm so sorry for your loss, but assaulting those with disabilities or health conditions which prevent them from SD is completely unacceptable and also pretty vile.

If you assault me I'll be pressing charges.

DeathByWalkies · 15/06/2021 20:23

Why on earth have you been deleted??

No idea. Didn't even get an email.

Possibly because the moderator who did it is a lockdown fetishist, and doesn't like the collateral damage of lockdowns being laid bare.

Possibly because I didn't toe the line, and said I wouldn't get tested because I can't afford to self isolate.

Possibly because I called out another poster for indirectly calling me pathetic.
