Does anyone else think we may end up with yet another lockdown

I really hope not; the last few were quite hideous. But I can’t help feeling that we are going to end up with another lockdown before the end of term (Scotland: so before 1st July) just hoping that the vaccination program is completed really soon

If there is another wave (I don't know if there will be) and if it leads to significant hospitalisations (I don't know if it will)... there's one thing I do know for certain...

Boris won't lock down until weeks after he's advised to and it's really too late and many lives have been lost.

So with that in mind, I'd say that there's a chance things could get worse and worse all summer but be held off by the fact the weather is nicer, and then autumn could hit like a ton of bricks. Hopefully not, but that's my feeling.

MercyBooth · 17/05/2021 00:38

@GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas Yep They can fuck off

Last Christmas you promised five days but the very next day you took that away
This year to save me from tears
I will not take any notice.......notice. (repeat)

Another promise.........more lies.
We keep our distance but still the Covid spies.
Tell me now do you still like to fine us.
Another lockdown it wouldnt surprise us.
Merry Christmas, the rich still went on their trips
Got their haircut while pissing on our chips.
We know you see us as plebs
If you locked down now, public be abused again.
November lockdown gave us hope in our hearts.
Another promise broken, removing the Christmas spark
Ooh Ooh But if you locked down now we"d have to do it AGAIN!

Last Christmas you promised five days. But the very next day you took that away
This year to save me from tears.
I will not take any notice.......notice (repeat)

MercyBooth · 17/05/2021 00:40

@Ninefeettall And my feeling is ppl wont bother with the autumn boosters. Because if you have your two jabs now and it changes nothing why bother

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 17/05/2021 01:11

Hope not but looks likely but maybe localised than national lockdown. We all know the drill as same same old! People (with some exceptions) are going to max it out over coming days to ensure we lockdown anyway! Short term instant gratification than sustainable long term societal ideology to save as many lives (including minimising more long Covid patients) and livelihoods as possible in the longer term to pragmatically aim for containment and eventual control or even eradication.

AnotherSunrise · 17/05/2021 01:12

No

StressMagnet · 17/05/2021 01:12

No one really knows but it does seem.that we are expecting a third wave.

I'm totally fed up with it all. It's hard to plan and look forward that's for sure.

What I dont understand is the rational behind Boris and others saying a third wave would be a bad / worse wave. Unless there is no lockdown why or how could things get worse?

There was a time where I would look into all of the science behind this kind of thinking but a pp have said, I'm happier taking one day at a time. It will work out or it wont. If vaccines arent are escape route then that's a grim reality to face if or when.

I was keeping positive by booking things on the off chance they would go ahead like cheap UK breaks. So far 1 out five has been cancelled and in not hopefully the Autumn winter one will go ahead either.

Now in retrospect I think that has just added to my stress.

Let's hope it all takes a positive turn from now on

Gothichouse40 · 17/05/2021 01:13

Come back and ask this about Glasgow in about 2 weeks time.

MulaD · 17/05/2021 01:15

I think perhaps towards the winter again but I am hoping not.

castemary · 17/05/2021 01:40

A few weeks ago I was hopeful that in Britain at least we were coming out of this and there would not be another lockdown. Now I don't know. It will be dependent on hospitalizations and deaths and it is too early to know what is going to happen with those.
It takes about a week to ten days for people infected to be hospitalised. So if anyone is infected tomorrow when places open up and is going to be really ill, they won't be hospitalised until next week. And tomorrow is a Monday, realistically it won't be till the weekend that more people will be out.
I have been trying to take things a day at a time but spurred on by my DP, this time around we have booked lots of things. Now I do not know whether they will happen and whether we should risk going anyway.
We haven't had the Brazil variant over here yet either which seems to affect young people and children more.
I am totally fed up of all of this now and wondering when it will all end.

FinallyFluid · 17/05/2021 01:58

I feel that if we can have a summer of some movements and freedoms then I will cope with another winter, but for pity sake give me at least twelve weeks of normality.

MercyBooth · 17/05/2021 02:11

Not me I dont want to live in Narnia

ExhaustedFlamingo · 17/05/2021 02:37

There was a thread on here the other day and I was honestly shocked at the number of people who are unwilling to have the vaccine. A lot of the reasons given weren't based on facts, just hearsay being repeated from the media.

The other thing that was said by quite a lot of people is "COVID is just a cold, I'll be fine". That might be true, but there have been thousands of young, fit and healthy people who have either died or appear to have long-term complications. I understand the need to avoid scaremongering, but refusing to accept the potential severity doesn't help any of us. Even if you don't get very ill yourself, you'll probably infect others - and they might not be as lucky.

It's just slightly frustrating. Having a partially vaccinated population is apparently a real problem as it allows the virus to develop immunity - sort of like a half-finished course of antibiotics. A high take-up of vaccines and a strong government response a la Australia could mean we avoid another lockdown.

I've commented about this before but the lockdown didn't really affect me too much as my life is fairly insular anyway. But I know how desperately hard some people found it, and I can only imagine the frustration if restrictions come in again because of a lack of people willing to have vaccinations.

There are some people who genuinely shouldn't/can't have the vaccine. But they are in a very small minority.

user1487194234 · 17/05/2021 05:28

I really hope not but worry that we will get one in Scotland as NS seems to want Zero Covid

annie335 · 17/05/2021 06:01

Hopefully it's just a tactic to scare people into getting the jab. It seems to be working looking at the huge queues in Bolton at the vaccination centres.

vera99 · 17/05/2021 06:03

From that quote upthread here was the Sage sub group readout of vaccine effectiveness (against the Kent variant) back at the end of March. It confirms what I have always thought while AZ is very good Pfizer is the gold standard of current vaxes.

Sparrowcrane · 17/05/2021 07:40

One must be a able to see a pattern in these events by now!

bumbleymummy · 17/05/2021 07:57

@MrsIsobelCrawley

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) has said that relaxations tomorrow "lead to a substantial resurgence of hospitalisations (similar to, or larger than, previous peaks)" as the Indian variant is 50% more transmissible than the current Kent variant.
I think it was could lead to and if it is 50% more transmissible. They weren’t speaking in certainties. They have tended to present worst case scenarios throughout.
newnortherner111 · 17/05/2021 08:03

I don't but I can see the restrictions planned to end on 21st June not all ending then or the date being pushed back.

Face coverings I could see returning, not much else. Vaccination seems to be turning it from a disease often leading to hospital and sadly death to one which is an illness that keeps you at home and off work.

RedcurrantPuff · 17/05/2021 08:06

Obviously if places are shut I can’t go but otherwise I won’t be complying. The government and SAGE are all ripping the absolute piss out of us now.

anon12345678901 · 17/05/2021 08:08

If there is I won't comply. I'll be seeing friends and family still in another lockdown.

ballsdeep · 17/05/2021 08:10

Even if we did I don't think people would stick to it.

MarshaBradyo · 17/05/2021 08:10

@Sparrowcrane

What about vaccination programme, doesn’t it change this?
RaspberryCoulis · 17/05/2021 08:13

Yep, I predict the announcement to next lockdown be june 15th, week before expected lifting of restrictions. This new strain will run rampant
through all the non vaccinated people causing NHS numbers to rise

Any chance of next week's lottery numbers from your crystal ball, Nostradamus? Hmm

RedcurrantPuff · 17/05/2021 08:13

What I dont understand is the rational behind Boris and others saying a third wave would be a bad / worse wave. Unless there is no lockdown why or how could things get worse?

Oh I know, it’s absolutel bollocks.

Same as the government telling us we can’t have people in our houses whilst people are allowed to pour into the U.K. from India

Same as NS shut Glasgow down at a moment’s notice 3 days after telling them they’d go into tier 2 and a week after the election. Bags the votes and then sticks 2 fingers up. The problem in Glasgow is a handful of cases in her constituency, but she was encouraging a mass gathering there on Thursday. But then that was to fuel anti U.K. government sentiment and further the cause of independence, clearly NS’s priority rather than Covid.

They really are taking the piss and we are letting them. 3 people in ICU in the whole of Scotland ffs.

RedcurrantPuff · 17/05/2021 08:18

Are we genuinely expected to believe that despite alleged “variants”

With large numbers vaccinated
The summer coming where respiratory infections decrease

That we are going to end up with more cases than when no one was vaccinated?

Nah SAGE you’ve cried wolf once too often now.
