Does anyone else think we may end up with yet another lockdown

I really hope not; the last few were quite hideous. But I can’t help feeling that we are going to end up with another lockdown before the end of term (Scotland: so before 1st July) just hoping that the vaccination program is completed really soon

@castemary

Drs in India have died after being fully vaccinated. Or do they not count as they are not white?
Yes but what are you expecting here based on this?
Needanewhat · 18/05/2021 16:25

The vaccines were never going to prevent everyone who was vaccinated from dying. There were always going to be some outliers, sadly.

castemary · 18/05/2021 16:27

My point is that no one really knows what is going to happen here. And yet multiple posters keep saying everything will be fine.

We do know that the Indian variant is more transmissible. And we do know that vaccines are not totally effective and so some people vaccinated could die. We have no idea yet about the numbers of deaths or hospitalizations there will be in the UK. Although various scientists are making predictions.

MarshaBradyo · 18/05/2021 16:29

Then I think we’re saying same thing. Scientists are modelling but we don’t know for certain what will happen.

I don’t know what will happen but the next few weeks are key I suppose.

Needanewhat · 18/05/2021 16:32

And yet multiple posters keep saying everything will be fine.

I don't think they can mentally cope with the alternative to be honest. I don't blame them.

castemary · 18/05/2021 16:33

Yes the next few weeks are key. Which is why I think England should have delayed opening up for 2 weeks to see what is happening. Or at least introduced tiers in areas where the Indian variant is already present.
If it ends up not being a big issue, two weeks would not make that much difference. But if it does end up being a major issue, those two weeks would give time to limit the variants spread.
If this is an issue, we will end up in lockdown again and with many deaths. I am so angry over it all. I just want life to get back to normal, but it can't if the government continues to mishandle this.

Overthebow · 18/05/2021 16:36

@castemary two weeks is a huge difference to those whose businesses depend on lockdown easing, those who have trips planned to see family they haven't seen for the last year etc. Cases have declined again today, we almost need to the reopening to see what will happen.

castemary · 18/05/2021 16:37

@Needanewhat I can kind of understand people not being able to mentally cope with the alternative. As a family, we have been socialising lots and have lots booked up. I can cope fine with no holidays, gigs, etc. But being able to see family and friends and do lots of normal things again has been great.
But since last weekend I feel we have just been taken back to the early days of March 2020. I can just see everything stopping again, and being plunged back to being really worried about my mum. If she catches this she will die.

MarshaBradyo · 18/05/2021 16:39

I do get that viewpoint but delaying opening businesses isn’t an easy thing. The conditions to go ahead were met on a certain date and the announcement was made and decisions were made by individuals on the back of that. Delaying by two weeks was how many jobs in reality? Some won’t prioritise that but I do think it matters.

I can see the huge pressure between two elements and right now I really want us to avoid lockdown above all else. If I get too worried it won’t change things so trying to just see what happens.

I know it’s hard, I do have moments of wanting to argh at all this.

Some things have been ok - schools opening for example, SA and Brazilian variants seem to have been considered to be worse.

castemary · 18/05/2021 16:40

@overtheblow The business I work for may not survive another lockdown. I know it will not be the case with all businesses, but for many two weeks really will not make that much difference to whether they survive.
And yes that appears to be Boris Johnson's strategy. Let's open up and see what happens. He is a gambler. He is gambling again. So far his bets during this pandemic have not paid off with the exception of ordering huge amounts of vaccine.
But then he does not care about ordinary people who pay for his many gambles.

MarshaBradyo · 18/05/2021 16:42

There is a lot of pressure from the ordinary person to not delay - MPs will be getting this pressure.

the80sweregreat · 18/05/2021 16:42

Boris Johnson was interviewed today about the new variant and he just said they are monitoring the situation etc. it was always feels grim when I read the online news, but the news on tv was much more measured today.
Who knows though? They are saying they are following the science and the road map. Local lockdowns or tiers might be a better way in hot spot areas.
The next few days are crucial but fingers crossed things won't get too bad and it can be controlled. Another national lockdown would be a disaster and people will kick against it I'm sure. They are , again, between a rock and a hard place.

castemary · 18/05/2021 16:45

@MarshaBradyo I think lockdowns are only necessary because the government has failed. We have had three lockdowns. With proper restrictions and track and trace we should not need lockdown. But in his desire to avoid a lockdown, Boris Johnson will refuse to do anything to avoid one.
Oh well we are all going to have dinner outside a pub in an hour. And luckily it is sunny here. My DP had wanted to go inside but I am feeling very wary again since the variant is where I live and is quickly increasing. Yes the numbers are still low, but we know from last year how quickly that can change.
I suspect by August I will not be able to go anywhere and the work project I spent all of yesterday planning will be cancelled.

MarshaBradyo · 18/05/2021 16:48

Have a nice dinner.

I definitely want to avoid another lockdown too. The thought of it isn’t good at all.

castemary · 18/05/2021 16:52

Thanks I will enjoy the dinner.
All through this pandemic, we have had harsher restrictions imposed when softer restrictions imposed earlier would have worked as well or better. So sadly I do think lockdown is coming. I will try and get everyone to the hairdressers this weekend.

Yes, localised ones
