"Boris Johnson has warned the effects of a third wave of coronavirus will "wash up on our shores" from Europe.
The PM said the UK should be "under no illusion" we will "feel effects" of growing cases on the continent."

anyone else worried that the planned out of lockdown now won't happen?

Not everyone goes to Europe.

"We ALL need to pray a really bad variant doesn’t rear its head because this thing is more than capable of doing so and from the looks of it "

I'm not religious.

It's also capable of not turning into a really bad variant. But a less deadly one. But why would you want to say that? There's no fun in not spreading doom is there?

tobee · 23/03/2021 23:23

People need to read up a bit more about natural and vaccine led immunity. They need to read up that it's very complicated. It's not just about antibodies. It's about T cells etc as well.

The vaccines don't work or not work; their efficacy in the population doesn't just fall off a cliff with the advent of a new variant.

@MarshaBradyo

Princess if you read Whitty’s first comment he would say this year. Do you disagree with his view?
Which view?
PrincessNutNuts · 23/03/2021 23:30

@Jellybaby4

Not negative, realistic! We have a long way to go.
We do. About a quarter of the vaccinations are done.

Which is brilliant.

But we still have the other 3/4 to go, which will probably take until October/November, and then the (possible) autumn booster third jab rollout.

tobee · 23/03/2021 23:45

Which is pretty amazing when you think about it! Certainly people were predicting that this wasn't going to be possible for many years, if at all. Despite the fact vaccine developers were optimistic.

Plus, don't forget there are plenty of new treatment options available and in trial and development. And preventatives.

Dont try to see the logic in something that is illogical, it's just deepening the toxic affect of this mania and sending decent people mad. Trust your instinct that it is complete manipulative BS and join a lockdown protest group.

MibsXX · 24/03/2021 00:29

Picture the scene... IF the powers that be had simply decided to allow this virus to rip through the population unfettered, AKA the 1918 spanish flu..... and others...... how would future historians be viewing us ? I am NOT a gov supporter by any stretch of the imagination, but sure as hell I would not want to be in their shoes right now, damned if they do, damned if they dont

EU citizen here. I think Boris means as Europe is so far behind with vaccinating the virus will be brought back into the UK or by holiday makers returning or visitors coming into the country.
JonSnowIsALoser · 24/03/2021 18:40

Pity Johnson is unable to "take control of our borders" after all and close them until the rest of the world catches up with the vaccinations.

TheGuru87 · 24/03/2021 19:07

What Boris basically means and what the scientists are worried about is:

Not the Kent or original wild strain of the virus reinfecting us from Europe, we already have it within our population. That strain will not be going away until we achieve around 80% immunity.

They are concerned about the South African variant, this variant is better able to avoid the immune response. Its basically rendered the vaccines much less effective, although they are not completely sure by how much. Early evidence shows the vaccines are not very effective for the SA variant.

So Boris, rightly so bans holidays and adds several EU countries to the red list, good move. As the SA strain is now grounding itself within the EU. If it finds its way into the UK and manages to circulate, we are screwed.

We have more vaccines being made right now, for the SA strain and our scientists are referring to them as boosters.

The problem, is that we may not be able to keep up with mutations and as the virus is now being put under pressure, by growing immunity. It will evolve through natural selection. The EU isn't so much our worry, it's Brasil and India and any country with poor health systems which aren't locking down. They are breading grounds for more aggressive mutations, which will eventually find there way here.

Our only real option is to lock our borders.

What was all that "take control of our own borders" stuff even for if a global pandemic doesn't even prompt them to do it?

There's no one stopping them, right?
