"Boris Johnson has warned the effects of a third wave of coronavirus will "wash up on our shores" from Europe.
The PM said the UK should be "under no illusion" we will "feel effects" of growing cases on the continent."

anyone else worried that the planned out of lockdown now won't happen?

OP posts:
StarCat2020 · 23/03/2021 20:01

Since February it has been stated that a third wave is inevitable, nothing to do with the EU.

Pigeonpair1 · 23/03/2021 20:07

I suspect it's his way of preparing us for no foreign holidays this summer.

Blacktothepink · 23/03/2021 20:13

As well as this I’m worried about the bills they’re pushing through under the auspices of covid 😡

XingMing · 23/03/2021 20:14

The EU has made a botch of coronavirus all around once the emphasis turned to vaccine, and post-Brexit, there is a near and convenient scapegoat. AZ doesn't work for older people, causes blood clots etc. The US's very large study, released yesterday, proved otherwise. The bureaucrats in the system are deflecting the blame to the UK to conceal their inertia and failure to take any steps. Supply chains are so convoluted that all the vaccines require elements from different countries. AZ is proving to be the workhorse vaccine, that is cheap, effective and transportable with minimal refrigeration. And it also seems to be tweakable for variant mutations.

B33Fr33 · 23/03/2021 20:16

I took it to be the latest fear mongering for whatever anti immigration white the Tories are cooking up now. Yawn.

lightsout · 23/03/2021 20:20

I think it’s fearmongering because we are now at deaths being below the 5 year average for the first time since summer and cases are under control. They don’t want to waver on their lockdown schedule and open up sooner.

Santina · 23/03/2021 20:21

If Boris is so concerned that we may have people from Europe infecting our shores, he needs to stop people coming here and insist that everyone that does, needs to do a hotel quarantine, at their own expense.

RedGoldAndGreene · 23/03/2021 20:25

He's not that concerned or everybody travelling here would be in hotel quarantine.

Defmy · 23/03/2021 20:29

they're loving all this power too much they are power mad theyd keep us locked down forever if they could

This is an insane position. They are haemorrhaging money, becoming unpopular within their own party and destroying the economy. I don't understand how anyone could possibly think this. There is no evidence for it whatsoever. The government has been slow to react, slow to lockdown and the death toll reflects that. They are now going to open up before the vaccine roll out has real traction on reducing transmission rates. None of that speaks of someone enjoying a lockdown. Even Dominic Cummings thinks the PM was overly reluctant to lockdown!

XingMing · 23/03/2021 20:34

I don't think this is about the exercise of power and control. I suspect it's because half the population is too stupid and too frustrated to comply with rules that were too complicated to start with. Wash your hands. Don't touch your face. Wear a mask. Sanitize any public property that you have to touch. Break the infection chain. It's boring, but not hard.

TheSparkleJar · 23/03/2021 20:37

Some other places are still struggling. Yet earlier there were several threads with people complaining that they may not be able to go to Italy/France/Spain next month...

Twoforthree · 23/03/2021 20:46

@MRex

Here's a few effects of the EU third wave washing up on our shores: 1) EU taking legally acquired UK vaccines to use on their own population, thereby delaying our roll-out 2) Supply chain disruption for food and other goods due to EU lockdowns and illness 3) EU holidays with a range of SA and Brazil variants growing will need to be banned or tightly managed to minimise issues with keeping those strains out of the UK until vaccine boosters arrive 4) Increased genome testing; we have a lot of trade with the EU if nothing else, there is a constant need to track the unwanted variants with increased testing to minimise spread 5) Half the population aren't vaccinated yet, herd immunity doesn't hit until we pass an unknown figure but maybe 70% with 2 doses. People may be less unwell, but many will still need medical support.

It thankfully isn't starting with the NHS being overwhelmed nor very high death rates, in that respect it should be milder, but there are serious problems nonetheless.

Do you think?

I'd lead the charge. Those left behind could be saved.

I dunno. I get the sense most people are coping much better than I am.

Delatron · 23/03/2021 21:02

Instead of making it illegal for us to go abroad they should be stricter with people coming in. What’s the point otherwise? We’re all in lockdown for months and months but does every person who arrives here go to a strict hotel quarantine?

Other countries have managed it. We do everything the wrong way round.

Thewiseoneincognito · 23/03/2021 21:03

It’s so depressing reading the thought processes of some people on here. Some truly believe it’s a big conspiracy to control us all, the sheer naivety and stupidity is just astounding.

It’s not a Tory plot to control and micro manage your lives. Our government and other nations on the planet are grappling with trying to keep society functioning to some degree whilst keeping a lethal virus at bay.

This is our path now, rolling lockdowns, top up vaccines and social distancing. We ALL need to pray a really bad variant doesn’t rear its head because this thing is more than capable of doing so and from the looks of it too many are prepared to give up.

Twoforthree · 23/03/2021 21:06

Exactly, the wise one.

All countries need to do the same too, anyone arriving from the UK should be subject to a mandatory hotel quarantine which they pay for themselves for at least 2 weeks. The same for anyone coming here from a holiday or simply visiting needs to be placed in a mandatory 2 week quarantine.

So a month of quarantine for 1 weeks stay on he Cote D’Azure.

Skysblue · 23/03/2021 21:19

We just had the third wave.

The strain currently causing huge problems in Europe is the ‘Kent strain’, from Kent UK. We exported it to them.

All this anti-European stuff about ‘the wave will come crashing on our shores’ is classic BJ trying to distract people from what he’s really up to re power grabs (increasing police powers / reducing Court powers / N Ireland customs chaos etc). He also needs an excuse to keep saying that ‘now is not the time to have an inquiry’ into his dither and delay handling of the pandemic.

He wants to be able to say in a couple of months that ‘the wave came but Britain fought it off and it hit the huge wall of our Oxford vaccine’ etc etc. He is laying groundwork for that speech now because he knows that taking credit for the vaccine program is the only way he’ll still have the job in a year.

So OP don’t let BJ toy with your emotions. Listen to the scientists.

Witchlight · 23/03/2021 21:26

It is highly unlikely the Tory’s want to control the population like this. It is more likely the PM is fighting to slow down the opening up from the Tory backbencher.

Why can’t people holiday in the UK. I completely understand the disappointment of those with family abroad but really, listening to people stamping their foot and saying they neeeeed a holiday abroad ..Really.

If there is another full wave of illness in the UK, that will be a bit scary, as it will likely happen if a variant “escapes” the current vaccines. We will all need another booster. The current 3rd wave being experienced in Germany, France, Italy Eton al, is caused by the Kent Variation.

What happened to the quarantine hotels here, was it real or a show?
Delatron · 23/03/2021 21:34

They have the quarantine hotels but it’s only if you fly in from certain countries. Whereas it’s illegal for most of us to travel.

If they are so bothered about ‘mutant variants’ ( now the NHS doesn’t need saving) then surely they could come from anywhere at anytime....

AnaofBroceliande · 23/03/2021 21:39

Because it can cost way, way more, the weather is often miserable, a lot of people combine it with visiting family abroad.

Tessateacup · 23/03/2021 21:41

@Skysblue Oh yes! He's probably drafting his vaccine victory speech! BJ's speech about how we will be affected by Europe's third wave really didn't add up. I'm amazed people still listen to BJ's pandemic speeches.

Witchlight · 23/03/2021 22:44

As I said, I understand those who have family abroad.

I think it will cost the UK far more, if those travelling on holiday (which is definitely a luxury, not a need) bring back more infection. I think we will end up paying far more if we holiday before Europe has a grip on the transmission.
