@LockdownIsDragging

Local to me the gp led centre has announced they are now starting second doses and from now on will only be doing second doses. People getting their first dose have to travel to the nearest central vaccination centre.

This is a concern as I live in a fairly high deprivation area of London and lots of the most vulnerable residents here don't have a car to get to a larger centre and probably wouldn't go if it involves a complicated journey.

I don't have a car either and would struggle - I might have to take a taxi which is not ideal as that in itself feels like a high risk situation for catching covid.

@Frazzled2207 my gp told me May on Friday. I can't see it happening by the end of the week! They have run out of vaccine in the local centre according to their social media updates.

One of my friends who has only just turned 50 booked himself his vaccination through the link earlier today, but since booking was texted by his GP this afternoon offering him an earlier slot locally. So some GPs are continuing down the age groups

My GP didn't get started with the oldies until late January, so assume we've got a few more weeks of first doses before they'll need to devote supplies to the second doses. I think it'll probably vary quite a bit between GPs over the next few weeks. Hopefully the larger centres will help mop up demand from those who fell behind. Meanwhile DS had his first dose at a hospital vaccination centre that has since closed, so has no idea where he's supposed to go for his second! He says his colleagues don't seem to know either. I've told him to try his GP.

@Firefliess if he’s in England has he tried entering his nhs number on the central booking system? If so, it should show him that he needs to book his second dose and give him availability near his postcode. If he was booked through a gp things seem to be operating differently.

My OH had his first AZ vaccine a few weeks ago via our GP service and wasn't given a date for his second dose.

A couple of weeks ago he went on to the NHS booking site and was able to book his second dose online - wasn't offered the same venue but there were alternatives a few miles away. The first date he was offered was exactly 11 weeks after his first.

The GP side is a bit opaque here too. Our GP was part of a group of GPs operating out of one site, and our elderly neighbours all went there, but I've no idea what they're up to because the sites are never updated. Our GP meanwhile said they are starting their own, but I didn't get contacted by them for Group 6 so just booked at the local mass vaccination site. All the younger (50-65 or vulnerable) neighbours all seem to be getting bookings there. It's right inside a big council estate, so I hope that will help uptake among the most vulnerable. Meanwhile I tried to move my second dose at that site, but it only offers me slots the same day or two days later, nothing the week after. Has anyone tried rebooking second jabs, will I get more slots next week?

It occurs to me that I know far too much about my neighbours on this topic, but it's only because people got in the habit of posting what age could book on WhatsApp. (Leads to daily conversations with DH like "Blimey, did you know C is 53 already? And F is only 47. I know, I would guess the opposite too!")

Matt Hancock doing a briefing at 5 pm, apparently JVT is with him so we will get the update on the football match.

I like JVT better than all the others experts. I feel confidence in what he says.

I wonder what Matt will say about what Dominic Cummings has said about his department.

Yes, JVT for Prime Minister. He'd get my vote.

Report
Piggywaspushed · 17/03/2021 16:21

I like JVT until he talks about teachers. He has a tone he adopts that gets my back up. I feel ha may be a bit intolerant of argument. I am sure he is a nice bloke but he doesn't have a world which welcomes debate. Very black and white. I don't think he'd say' show me, tell me, help me to understand'. I think there are scientists who do but we don't hear much from them at a high profile level.

We have now had two positive tests : the second one has led to a bunch of year 12s having to SI. My DS's school's approach of doing all the tests before 're entry' was definitely a much better decision.
@FleeingBlue

I’m not hoping people are racist, they are racist.

The Venn diagram of “racist”, “Antivaxx” “covid denier”, “still uses Facebook”, and 40-50”. Is basically one giant overlap.

Hence, the younger ages groups will be opened up in no time.
This being the data thread, I would be interested to see a link to the study you got this data from.

Bit worried about the news coming out of Europe that they intend to restrict vaccine supply to countries ahead in their vaccination program. They don’t seem to be talking about it on the press conference though so presumably think their contracts are watertight.

Report
JanFebAnyMonth · 17/03/2021 17:42

Laura Kuenssberg asked about it, have just heard Matt Hancock's reply in the radio...
Basically saying Ursula van der Lyen (sp?) said fulfilling contractual obligations was fair enough. Apparently.

Report
ancientgran · 17/03/2021 17:43

@JanFebAnyMonth yes that's what he said. Maybe the press trying to get a headline.

Very positive about the results of the vaccinations on antibodies and transmission.

Report
Piggywaspushed · 17/03/2021 17:50

The vaccine supply reduction rather fits with a vaguely threatening text I got from GP today that said they were going to top booking on 28 March. At the time I thought that seemed odd.

Might also explain why my area is suddenly throwing vaccines at people in groups 9 and 10.

Report
Firefliess · 17/03/2021 17:52

Thanks @lurker and @feelingblue I'll tell DS to try the national booking system.

The leaked letter about the downturn in vaccine supply is concerning. Matt Hancock was playing it down at the press conference, but if it does mean no new doses during April, I can't see how we can have full opening up with nightclubs and everything by late June. The real world data on the over 70s only seeing a 60% fall in infections even after two doses also seems a bit disappointing - 40% of people still able to transmit it, plus all the unvaccinated sounds like enough to keep infections going round unless there are continued social distancing requirements indefinitely. And 60% of the over 70s being as likely as ever to end up in hospital is still a lot of people. I do wonder though whether they have really factored in the increased risk taking that is likely to occur among vaccinated people? Or who they compared the vaccinated over 70s to, seeing as pretty much all of them took the vaccine?

Hopefully those who do still get infected after vaccination don’t get as seriously ill though.
Ultimately lockdown was mainly to prevent overwhelming the NHS which it has achieved.
Longer term I think we will need to accept a level of risk in order to enjoy returning to normal. It would be preferable to have all adults vaccinated but I don’t think it is an essential part of returning to normal.
