Oh please don't let us revert to "Stay Alert"!

Doomsdayiscoming · 16/03/2021 19:51

@FleeingBlue

I’m not hoping people are racist, they are racist.

The Venn diagram of “racist”, “Antivaxx” “covid denier”, “still uses Facebook”, and 40-50”. Is basically one giant overlap.

Hence, the younger ages groups will be opened up in no time.

MRex · 16/03/2021 20:14

In normal times, India manufactures 25% of UK drugs. Most people know at least that drugs like paracetamol come from India. Racists exist of course, but if they get as far in reading the news as to see that vaccines came from India, then they're probably knowledgeable enough to know that lots of pharmaceuticals do.

And anyway, I use Facebook to talk with friends in groups. That's just called Being Older Than You. My generation built internet sites, we'll use them if we want. Cheeky young scamp.

Firefliess · 16/03/2021 20:31

My FB feed is full of 40-50 year olds who are most impatient to get their vaccines I'm afraid @doomsday. So you may have to wait a little longer! I only know one Covid denier antivaccer - her views are around civil liberties and feeling "bullied" into having it, nothing to do with where it's made, and she's ironically my one friend who's not on FB. DH's friends are mostly in their 50s and all been jabbed in the last week or so. All happily sharing their new jab status on FB. I don't know any anti-vaccers among them. Generally surveys show increasing numbers of people opposed to the vaccine in the younger age groups. I suspect most who are opposed will be opposed to any jab - if you were rational enough to be making comparisons between them you'd be rational enough to get whichever you were ordered, in the UK at least. Might be a bit different in countries like Germany where the government has been rather stupidly fueling concerns about the AZ vaccine specifically.

Firefliess · 16/03/2021 20:34

That should say whichever you were offered, not ordered of course (I do not share my bonkers friend's view that anyone is being bullied into getting vaccinated!)

ceeveebee · 16/03/2021 20:50

I am in the 40-50 bracket as are many of my friends and colleagues and I don’t know a single person who isn’t desperate for the vaccine.
And even your stereotype of some fictional racist anti-vaxxer will no doubt want to go to Benidorm on holiday so will probably put their principles to one side...

Doomsdayiscoming · 16/03/2021 20:52

@Firefliess

Maybe I was being slightly over the top.

I I honestly think the 40-50 will be the lowest uptake. 30-40 might be low due to women not wanting it due to ttc, being pregnant, etc.

If you consider most 40-50 don’t have this concern then I think my general apathy holds firm.

As for your FB friends. I imagine you have decent ones.

Oxford study into expected acceptance rates
Rates fall as people get younger but still expecting over 80% take up for age 40-50

@wintertravel1980

The changes planned for March 29th are only optical. They are not going to change the trend.

If we look at the mobility index (using London as an example), people are not "staying at home" anyway. The mobility index now is similar to what it was back in the second half of June 2020 when we were just "staying alert".

citymapper.com/cmi/london

The real relaxations that appear to matter are schools and hospitality. Non essential shops/hairdressers may have a marginal impact and arguably can and should be accelerated if the trend continues to look good.

But there are changes, six people meeting or two households up, sports can start and some of us have been following the rules on travel. So sorry but to me there were changes on the 8th and then there are changes on the 29th and then the following month on the 12th, those aren't 5 week gaps.

My kids, and their partners, are in their 20s, 30s and 40s. They are all keen to get their jabs. Well one of mine plus one partner have already had their jabs, the others can't wait.
boys3 · 16/03/2021 21:22

an easier to read well for me at least weekly movement in England by each age band. No huge surprises obviously. Actual 7 day rate per 100,000 and 7 day case totals, and then week on week percentage change. Just from the start Feb and to the latest available figures on the dashboard; which take us to 11th March.

Same age group, as I've said I am against being vaccinated before more vulnerable people, although declining is obviously difficult, but it's truly ludicrous for the people with elderly parents overseas who are at significant risk not being able to be vaccinated due to the hoarding of vaccines here.

I don't actually know anyone in the age group who's desperate for the vaccine, some will have it when it comes along gladly but are happy to wait, some who couldn't give a toss either way, and others who see it as relatively pointless - equating it with the flu jab which they had never bothered with at all.

There's obviously quite a lot of differences in the different circles we all move in, it's why anecdote is such a crap measure!

sirfredfredgeorge · 16/03/2021 22:23

@boys you can really see both the vaccine impact and the LFT impact in that chart! Thanks.

lurker101 · 16/03/2021 22:43

Thanks @MRex love that stat! Much more impressive! I always struggle with accurate age bracketed populations. Glad you got your jab!

ceeveebee · 16/03/2021 22:59

This is a great graph to see - now no excess deaths in 4 out of 9 regions in England

@ceeveebee Yes - I wouldn't be surprised if the next weeks data sees no excess deaths in England.

phlebasconsidered · 17/03/2021 06:22

I am desperate for it at 49, with asthma, a teacher. My area has shot up again since we opened schools. And we are a hotspot. They're still on the 60's where I am though.

MRex · 17/03/2021 06:42

I know one covid denier who doesn't want the vaccine. I knew 3 who wanted to wait a bit; one caught covid and still poorly, one changed her mind (should be invited this month) and the other is waiting for more people to get it and tell her their side effects (arm sore for 15 min yesterday evening is all I can report so far). I know many hundreds more who are really keen; it comes up on surprising numbers of work calls, neighbour groups, toddler groups etc.

wintertravel1980 · 17/03/2021 09:36

They're still on the 60's where I am though.

Right now vaccine bookings are open for everyone over 50. There is no need to wait for a letter or a text - people can book directly on the website:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/

Smaller vaccination centres (e.g. pharmacies) may not have immediate availability but larger hospitals and hubs (e.g. Excel in London) are often able to offer next day appointments.

littleowl1 · 17/03/2021 09:55

Hello everyone. So sorry if this was already discussed. I rummaged through the pages and couldn’t find it. I watched the head of the EMA giving her press release yesterday and was struck that she mentioned that a sub population may be at higher risk of clots. Separately there was some reference in the media about women being over represented in this population. And then I heard separately someone mention HRT/contraceptive pill. I assume much of this is unproven at this stage (and probably utter nonsense) but I did wonder if anyone was aware of anonymised patient data that might be available/published for the 40 cases? Like age, gender, ethnicity, health conditions, medications, other. I suspect it’s not available (owing to privacy) but thought I would ask.

Frazzled2207 · 17/03/2021 10:08

@phlebasconsidered
bet you a tenner you will be able to book within a week

LockdownIsDragging · 17/03/2021 10:34

Local to me the gp led centre has announced they are now starting second doses and from now on will only be doing second doses. People getting their first dose have to travel to the nearest central vaccination centre.

Madmog · 17/03/2021 10:45

My 19 year old DD would have her vaccine now if she could. She's not overly concerned about covid, but wants her life back.

JamesAnderson · 17/03/2021 11:16

This is interesting, our GP has put a post on facebook saying to call if you want to be vaccinated by them because they're not included in the national booking system. I would guess they've finished group 6
@herecomesthsun

It’s now 5-0 and they’ve had their goalkeeper sent off.
Not really. We had a good lead, but then we left the goal open by opening up schools but not vaccinating parents and teachers first. We really need to keep a close eye on infection rates while we get the 50s and below vaccinated.

Hopefully, we'll get away with it, but there's still an element of risk there.
