Hey did you catch the item on sewage testing last week - it was about 10 to 9 on the Today programme I think, ? Friday.

I thought of you x

MRex · 15/03/2021 11:15

I read a summary but couldn't listen. Thank you, I'm so glad everyone thinks of me for sewage Grin

JanFebAnyMonth · 15/03/2021 11:25

The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) has written to the MHRA calling for urgent review of the schools LFD testing, because (I think) of the incredibly low number of positives:

JanFebAnyMonth · 15/03/2021 11:34

Actual letter is here - clearly explained concern about in-school false positives unconfirmed by PCR, but also about the whole scheme

Barracker · 15/03/2021 11:43

I've just realised it's exactly a year ago today that I started the first daily stats thread. On March 15th 2020 there had been 21 deaths in total, and 1140 cases reported to the previous day.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3849129-Covid-19-Daily-numbers-graphs-analysis-thread?

I handed over the baton for the daily threads a long time ago but just wanted to drop by to thank everyone for keeping the conversation going all this time. It's so important I think.

What a year it has been Barracker. Little did we know then what was in store for us.

JanFebAnyMonth · 15/03/2021 12:38

Ah thanks @Barracker and nice to hear from you, am going to have a look at that first thread.

Cornettoninja · 15/03/2021 12:41

Hey @Barracker - I remember you starting an oasis of calm in amongst the rabble of ‘aarrrggghh’ threads. Smile

Props to all those who keep it going with balanced inspection of the data and headlines Brew

AnyFucker · 15/03/2021 12:51

We're just starting the rapid climb in numbers. It will get much steeper for some time yet

You said it

nordica · 15/03/2021 12:55

Thanks for starting the first thread Barracker! I've been more of a lurker than a participant (and name changed a couple of times...) but I was just thinking the other day how important this MN Coronavirus forum has been for me in the past year.

MRex · 15/03/2021 13:09

Thanks for starting these @Barracker, what a long series it's been!

ancientgran · 15/03/2021 13:36

Sidmouth care home outbreak now reported that 5 have died in the past week and ten in hospital. The police and CQC still investigating and all staff self isolating and agency staff now running the home.

MRex · 15/03/2021 13:41

Thanks. Any news on what exactly the police are investigating?

Quarantino · 15/03/2021 14:03

Thank you barracker and still missing ShootsFruits (can't remember exact username Blush ) and bigchoc....

Those Sidmouth deaths are awful! I had family in a care home around there a few years ago (sadly no longer with us) - I can't imagine how their families are feeling.

Hardbackwriter · 15/03/2021 14:03

The police have issued a statement - www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/police-investigate-five-covid-deaths-5176227 - but it's really, really vague about what they're doing, and I also struggle to see why it would be a criminal matter. It says they're carrying out post mortems which is also a bit puzzling.

ancientgran · 15/03/2021 14:23

They aren't saying much at all but if you consider the big outbreak in Exmouth with 9 dead and no investigation it does seem curious. It isn't even as if one force is reacting differently to another.

ancientgran · 15/03/2021 14:25

I should say I haven't heard about an investigation at the Exmouth home, I'm sure CQC are looking at it but no police investigation as far as I know.

bathsh3ba · 15/03/2021 14:27

Entirely speculation, I have no insider information, but with all the talk of safeguarding I wonder if they are considering either insufficient protection measures or someone deliberately introducing the virus?

ceeveebee · 15/03/2021 14:31

I wondered the same as @bathsh3ba. I’ve seen the phrase “ Devon and Cornwall Police launched an investigation following concerns about the outbreak” in a couple of articles, so I wondered whether there had been a whistleblower who had raised done concerns? Again speculation

Firefliess · 15/03/2021 14:31

@Hardbackwriter

It's not exactly clear is it? I wonder whether they feel the care home managers were negligent in some way, such as failing to report the outbreak quickly enough, failing to prevent it spreading (testing, isolating, etc) or failing to get medical attention quickly enough for those who fell sick? Postmortems are likely to do with determining the underlying cause of death (quite possibly not Covid with frail elderly people, even if they had Covid when they died)
Hardbackwriter · 15/03/2021 15:19

I would have thought - but bow entirely to those (like @ancientgran) who know much more about this than me - that the bar would be very high for suspected negligence or inadequate safeguarding to be investigated in the first instance by the police rather than the CQC?

ancientgran · 15/03/2021 16:09

I have known CQC investigations but don't know of police investigations for neglect personally but I know it does happen but it seems rare.

The only police investigation I know of personally was in a home for younger people and a member of staff went to prison for sexual abuse, obviously a different scenario.

As Hardbackwriter says it must be quite significant. It is also strange when the home seems to say they have kept the residents safe for nearly 12 months which I assume means this is their first outbreak. Why would they suddenly get so negligent unless someone took their eye off the ball because they'd had their vaccinations. I suppose it will all come out eventually.

ancientgran · 15/03/2021 16:10

64 deaths today. Hasn't been that low for a while.

Piggywaspushed · 15/03/2021 16:12

The only other care home criminal investigation I recall was in Belgium (?) when the visiting Santa Claus infected elderly residents.

Frazzled2207 · 15/03/2021 16:19

Cases are just about 1000 which is slightly up on last Monday BUT 1,000 of those were LTF positives registered yesterday which haven't yet converted to a positive PCR
