PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

I think we need a lockdown like we had in spring, including closing schools, to head off this new mutant strain and give us some time to start an intensive vaccination programme.

This would have a terrible impact on the economy though and so a balance needs to be found.

I suspect a new tier 5 in the areas with high infection rates. A lot of areas moving into a higher tier, depending on infection rates.

Bocadilla · 29/12/2020 14:42

Think schools ( both primary and secondary) and nurseries will be closed

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 29/12/2020 14:43

Bocadilla - that would be logical and what scientists have advised. Therefore it won't happen

triceratops12 · 29/12/2020 14:43

I think they will keep us hanging a bit longer, and just move some tier three areas into tier four.

KatherineJaneway · 29/12/2020 14:44

Schools and Uni's to close

Catsneezies · 29/12/2020 14:45

I think schools need to close. But I think the government will keep primaries open (secondaries online except for Y11 and Y13) until the rates go sky high, we have 1000+ deaths a day and hospitals are turning people away, and then they will close primaries as well as secondaries.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 29/12/2020 14:46

I’d like a full lockdown like April so schools and other education closed and as many working from home as possible. Limited trips to shops and one adult only unless a valid reason. Too many using shops for a social outing,

eviesmum · 29/12/2020 14:47

Full lock down for month of January

Jinglingandnotmingling · 29/12/2020 14:47

Whilst it would be lovely to think it was more vaccine acquired and being administered, track & trace now running perfectly, Nightingale hospitals fully staffed, I suspect it will be whole country into Tier 4, all schools closed.

PTW1234 · 29/12/2020 14:49

I really can’t see them closing schools just in certain tiers.

I am hoping schools don’t close, but I think it might be needed. That’s both secondary and primary

Armi · 29/12/2020 14:59

They won’t close schools. They want parents in work and are happy to kill school staff to accomplish this.

1forAll74 · 29/12/2020 15:01

I think schools should close for some time, it's awful I know, and very troublesome for thousands of people, but think it would be a wise move now.

Barbie222 · 29/12/2020 15:01

Sky News says Boris is chairing a meeting at 6pm to discuss the possibility of tier 5 and school closures. I'd be really surprised if secondary weren't delayed for another week. Primaries will be the last bad delayed decision Boris makes. He just can't move his mindset fast enough to keep up with the data, and cant learn from his previous mistakes, so quite likely primaries will limp along for a week or two in January before a mass de facto closure there too, by which time the damage is done.

He won't survive an overwhelmed NHS when he's put everyone through so much this year, and if rumours are to believed he's desperately looking for a way out of No 10.

Frozenintime · 29/12/2020 15:02

They said in the last few days that schools would stay open ?

Stellaris22 · 29/12/2020 15:02

I need schools to stay open.

But for the safety of teachers and support staff I hope they are closed. It is completely unreasonable to put teachers in so much danger.

SuperbGorgonzola · 29/12/2020 15:04

I agree with this. While it does make sense to keep schools open in areas where rates are lower, I'm not sure how they square the unfairness of whole areas being denied education where others carry on as they did last term. This would be heightened for children and parents where the online teaching provision is less good.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/12/2020 15:04

Primary schools open. Secondaries delayed until the 18th or beyond. The rest of England going into tier 4.

bornatXmastobequiet · 29/12/2020 15:04

@Frozenintime

They said in the last few days that schools would stay open ?
So you can be pretty sure they won’t, then.
MillieEpple · 29/12/2020 15:05

I think they will talk about the oxford vaccine roll out and mention the army helping schools do testing.

SophieB100 · 29/12/2020 15:05

I think that Boris will put us all in lock down (or Tier 5 if he doesn't want to say the dreaded words "lock down" from Thursday (to prevent New Year eve mixing).
Schools - All will close - and be online from Monday for at least two weeks initially to be reviewed. This will buy them some time to set up the testing.
He will announce the roll out of the Oxford vaccine.
Boris likes to do the 'good news' so he'll save this announcement to boost us all up (hah) and leave Chris Whitty to do all the gloom about the figures, need for lockdown. And Gavlaar Twillock Williamson can squeak on about education ad infinitum without actually saying any thing at all.

PhilCornwall1 · 29/12/2020 15:05

It's either another bloody lockdown (like that will work), or schools will be closed. Oh joy!!

SuperbGorgonzola · 29/12/2020 15:06

@Frozenintime

In my view the language on this has become increasingly tentative over the last week or so. To my knowledge Johnson has said he wants schools open "if possible", and Gove has said he is "confident" but that the situation is under review.
PurpleDaisies · 29/12/2020 15:06

Widespread tier four, possibly even all of England if they’re sensible enough. English secondary schools (possibly universities too) to close for at least a fortnight.

HotSince63 · 29/12/2020 15:06

Whole of England into Tier 4 from midnight tomorrow, schools will carry on for now and by third or last week in January we'll be in a full April style lockdown again.

TableFlowerss · 29/12/2020 15:07

Everything closed. Schools will stay open
