PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

No sorry, probably didn't word that correctly, in tier 4 it would be stay at home anyway but he mentioned NYE as a separate thing so obviously law in tier 4 but advice generally for other tiers, not a new separate law for NYE

Press conference from Downing Street at 10.30 this morning re the vaccine.

Does not look like a national lockdown, more places going into tier 4 so Matt Hancock has just said on GMB.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 30/12/2020 08:58

@Lairyfightzzzz

If they close schools my reception aged child doesn't even get to learn the basics at incase

You do realise that in countries with much better educational outcomes than the UK they don't even start learning to read until age 7?

There’s also the novel idea that parents can teach their children the basics at that age Hmm

Yes. I'm tier 4 already. Schools are shut of course , do it's very much like lockdown 1. It's grim , but people here do follow the rules mostly and wear masks in the shops that are open. I've seen a few families out at the shops. Once schools open up again it'll be awful again I guess. Hospitals are overwhelmed though.

Lockdown doesn't sound likely then or even any news about schools?

MagicSummer · 30/12/2020 09:15

To the PP saying that they knew of nobody who has received the vaccine yet : two of my neighbours have had it, I am taking my aunt for hers on New Year's Day and most of the occupants of her block of flats have already had it - so it is happening!

Decembersnowfall · 30/12/2020 09:17

I have a feeling the news about schools closing will happen as late as Saturday or Sunday so they can blame the decision on people mixing over Christmas

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 09:19

My DM is getting her second dose of the vaccine next week and so are some of her neighbours

MrsMiaWallis · 30/12/2020 09:22

My PILS have had their first dose, second due next week.

Decembersnowfall · 30/12/2020 09:24

I have elderly grandparents who have received their first dose of vaccine and back for the second one in about a week.

itsgettingweird · 30/12/2020 09:27

@Fizbosshoes

Remember that after next 4-6 weeks it would be expected our weather will warm up which will help massively. Not just with spread but people getting out and about more and not wanting to meet indoor just briefly when rules say not to

6 weeks is 10th February, I wouldn't expect weather to warm up by then? More likely middle or end of March if we're waiting for more mild weather.

I'm south coast and we do tend to get milder then. But you're right that in general it will be a month later. I was self centric when I wrote that Blush

But another month is better than a year!

SophieB100 · 30/12/2020 09:39

I am Mystic Meg!
Twas me who predicted the rollout of the Oxford Vaccine (on page 1 yesterday).
I will be along later with Saturday's winning lotto numbers Wink

Seriously, I've seen on another thread that Williamson is due to make announcement about schools today, but can't find a press source to back this up.
I'll keep looking and post one if I find it.

littlemisslozza · 30/12/2020 09:43

Williamson making an announcement is mentioned on the BBC news website.

Schools shouldn’t need to close, if the rules they had were followed and enforced we wouldn’t be in this situation. I’m in tier 2 area, and know so many people who have been mixing with friends, meeting for drinks and going into each other’s houses. Very few people social distance in shops. Children’s education should be a priority, they are the future

It would also be helpful if schools actually had some money to buy hand sanitiser and cleaning materials. Novel suggestion there.

HmmSureJan · 30/12/2020 10:28

Well yes. My children could count, knew their letters, colours, shapes etc by the time they started school. I do think people love the opportunity to catastrophise on here at times.

Agree for surface transmission it’s useful but the virus is airborne and most catch that way. That’s why school cases are so high, little or no PPE, social distancing etc amongst large groups of people spending hours together.

Not sure. Parliament are debating the Brexit vote at the moment.

My mum was told off by the headteacher when I started school as she'd taught me to read too well and I was ahead of where she thought I should be.
