PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

@HotSince63

The problem is unless we're all in the same Tier lots of people will go to the nearest Tier 2 area for NYE.

4 of our friends (2 couples) are going out for a meal together into Tier 2 and weren't asked when booking what Tier they're from (we are in T3), whether they are separate households, etc.

This is why the upmarket restaurant just down the road from me here in Tier Two has decided to close anyway. We're only six miles from T4. Boss said he'd tried asking people their addresses when they booked, they'd happily say they were local, and then from overheard conversations it would be perfectly clear they were actually from over the border.
herecomesthsun · 29/12/2020 16:39

I don't think the future is ruined for my kids (but it would help if we can just survive the next few months).

I think we will go into the roaring twenties when we get the chance and hospitality businesses will flourish. I think the government should in due course encourage that. We might need to do things slightly differently maybe.

We are very lucky to have the vaccines.

Re education I missed a lot through illness when at school and it never held me back. My parents weren't particularly well educated, no higher education, and we didn't have a computer etc. Just a library. I was still top of the class, straight As yadda yadda. in fact I got further in front working on my own.

Roselilly36 · 29/12/2020 16:39

More areas to be moved into T4, Reminding people not to hold social gatherings for NYE, update on Oxford vaccine & hopefully confirming arrangements for return to school.

greenspacesoverthere · 29/12/2020 16:42

I just wish the government would actually listen to the science and act on it in good time

Not 2 months late when it's all gone to shit and we get 2 and a half minutes notice to sort out ourselves and our lives

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 29/12/2020 16:43

I want schools to close right now. Then open them very staggered or rota'd.
I believe vulnerable children and children who need to be in school due to both parents working or no sustainable childcare to go first, parents should be given the choice. This means less children in school meaning less school transmission. Teachers and families will then hopefully be safer.

I also believe non essential shops should close but these should open up with schools allowing more children in. Children of retail staff to start to attend if needed. Again taking complete baby steps.
Yes I am fully aware children need education but education will mean nothing to them if that costs the lives of their parent/s

There should be no outdoor/indoor meetings apart from bubbles. Families should stick to their households. Then when the numbers start to drop significantly we can then slowly change this according to tiers.

Will the Government do this? Nope! I know my idea would cause catastrophic problems. However, I see no other way.

ZippedyDooDa · 29/12/2020 16:44

I hope they close the schools in the south-east and London. I know how hard that will be for everyone (me included). But people aren't adhering to the rules, and even the rules themselves are too lax in the light of the huge health crisis we are facing with a fast-spreading virus......

Ihatefish · 29/12/2020 16:45

I’d love to see non-essential shops close. People picking up stuff putting it down someone else picking it up-got to be mass cross contamination.

Primary schools round here don’t seem to have any infections so I reckon these can stay open -secondary schools should close except to exam years.

Offices should close except to absolutely essential workers.

That’s what I think should happen but in reality -keep primark open as some tat is more important than lives. Shut hospitality where open (totally wrong decision)

QueenoftheAir · 29/12/2020 16:45

I hope we can keep schools open, which will mean much tougher restrictions everywhere else and for everyone else.

I hope also that the DofE will loom seriously at the system used in other European countries, where students rotate - a group in on one week, then a second group in the next week, turn & turn about, with work to keep them going in the week at home.

And a government announcement which explains clearly, and absolutely that:

in order to keep schools & colleges & nurseries open, everybody must be otherwise pretty much locked down.

In the last lockdown (autumn) too many people completely misunderstood the principles. They said (and I read it in here on MN as well) "Oh well, my DC are mixing with all sorts at school, so it doesn't matter if we mix households at home."

It's precisely because your DC mix at school, that outside of school, everyone needs to remain restricted to their own household.

But our government is just driven by popularity, and that wouldn't go down well. Instead we hospitals across the south at capacity, and in the north heading that way.

My tier 3 area going into tier 4 that evening just before my desperately needed hair appointment that was cancelled first due to Nov lockdown, then my child isolating then hairdresser isolating
.. 1st World problems I know... Just feels doommmmmmmedddddddddd

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/12/2020 16:46

@TableFlowerss

Everything closed. Schools will stay open
Not everything, dentists and opticians must be able to stay open this time, they are essential.
treeslets · 29/12/2020 16:49

I'm thinking maybe full lockdown including schools and nurseries, they'll say it's short term but of course they don't actually know that.

randomer · 29/12/2020 16:49

Liverpool is open for business apparently.

PumpkinPie2016 · 29/12/2020 16:52

More areas in tier 4.

TES (times education supplement) posted an article today saying that all secondary pupils will be online for the first week (including Y11/13), 11/13 will start to return in week 2 and all other children in week 3. That's secondary only, nothing on primary so assume they will be open. Obviously this may change before tomorrow.

I am in a current tier 3 area in the North. I worry for my Y11/13 students if we are not in. Teaching them online is what I will do but it doesn't replicate being in class. I also worry for other year groups who will be taught online Sad all that said, I'm not sure there's any way around it.

TableFlowerss · 29/12/2020 16:52

Well that stands to reason as they are essential

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 16:53

Our desist is only open for emergencies, tier three.

Scumble · 29/12/2020 16:54

Unveiling of the new three word slogan.

Alas. Waffle. Spaff.

LadyLazaruss · 29/12/2020 16:54

Dread to think. Can't stand this much more. It's putting a hold on everything.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 29/12/2020 16:55

When you have first class idiots like these then I hope there is full lockdown.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 29/12/2020 16:55

@Belladonna12

I think if the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine gets approved it would make sense to shut everything down including schools for a month and for there to be a huge effort to vaccinate everyone NHS staff, everyone over 50 and teachers. They need to prioritise NHS staff over the elderly now too.
This is exactly what should happen. It seems the only common sense approach. Which means it probably won't.

I have a six year old and a two year old and I work. I don't want schools and nurseries to close. But I think they have to until the vaccine gets a proper roll out. Half arsed lockdowns with the schools open are making sod all difference.

Carlislemumof4 · 29/12/2020 16:55

Predict North and East Cumbria to move in to at least tier 4 from tier 2 due to new infection rate figures.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/12/2020 16:55

@TableFlowerss

Well that stands to reason as they are essential
They had to close first time and I don't think my NHS dentist has opened yet, they certainly haven't contacted me despite saying they would!

@StealthPolarBear my dentist is fully open in tier 4 so it sounds as though they are picking and choosing.

BungleandGeorge · 29/12/2020 16:57

Isn’t the problem with a lockdown that it pushes the peak of infections back for London/SE/East and then the whole country will hit the peak at the same time?
Personally I think maybe there needs to be a rethink on priority for vaccination and shielding. I think I saw that Russia had prioritised workers but I’m not sure what the rest of Europe are doing? Having already announced the strategy it would be very unpopular with some so very unlikely to happen

wanderings · 29/12/2020 16:59

I’d love to see non-essential shops close.
Listen to yourself. You'd "love" to see non-essential shops close. These are people's jobs, businesses, livelihoods you're talking about, which people have worked hard to build up, have invested large amounts of money to become covid-safe, and you would love to see them being destroyed even more. It's really sad that people are loving this complete and utter destruction.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 29/12/2020 17:01

I sincerely hope that schools don't shut.

I also dearly wish we could just go about our business as normal, should we choose to, instead of being bankrupted and losing our homes as a result of lockdowns.

Some of the glee on MN about lockdowns, school closures etc makes me feel very, very sick.

Jbh333 · 29/12/2020 17:02

Will be a few more areas into tier 4.... primary schools will not close is my prediction.

The rest will be just a load of chatter about vaccine updates and ramping u the fear factor a bit so we don’t break the rules NYE.
