PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT TIMES:

3PM - TIER CHANGES - Government Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to announce changes to England’s tiers in the Commons today at around 3pm.

4PM - SCHOOLS RETURNING - Education Secretary Gavin Williamson is to make a statement at around 4pm about school returning.

Making a statement re schools makes me nervous. Wonder if they will U-Turn and hold off for a couple of weeks at least to try to contain the spread. It's probably too late for the SE/London etc, but keeping numbers down as much as they can in other areas should be a priority now.

covetingthepreciousthings · 30/12/2020 12:23

Where's Boris? Is he not making any announcements today?

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 12:24

Boris is defending Brexit all day. They have had to shoehorn in the other announcements.

I wonder how many schools are ready to do the mass testing?

maskedpotato · 30/12/2020 12:25

I'm in Cumbria and we will be going to tier 3 if not tier 4 although a move to tier 4 will be unpopular in the south of the county as the rates are much lower there. I don't see how Eden and Carlisle can be less than tier 4 and I don't think they will split the county.

covetingthepreciousthings · 30/12/2020 12:37

Downing Street has said that it will be holding a virtual press conference 'later today' - timings and who is attending yet to be confirmed.

It comes as the government prepares to possibly put millions more people into Tier 4 in England at a Commons briefing at 3pm and the Secretary of State for Education Gavin Williamson makes a statement on schools at 4pm.

This makes it sound like there's a press conference after the House of Commons announcements? Other news outlets also reporting there will be a press conference from Downing Street..

SnapSnapDragon · 30/12/2020 12:40

I'm in Scotland and we had an announcement a while ago that the start date of term would be delayed by a week and that the first week would be online. Seems reasonable although if I had the choice I'd send all schools back as planned, because I don't think the disruption in education is a price worth paying. I'd also send universities back (same reason, plus I imagine there's a bit of herd immunity that's built up within the student community). And while I'm at it I'd reinstate sports.

He was in the House of Commons this morning watched it live
ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 13:20

I'm assuming the Government announcement times will be the ones where the relevant Minister talks in Parliament and then Boris will speak to the nation at 5pm

OP posts:
Amira19 · 30/12/2020 13:26

I'm wondering if they decided to lockdown until they can role out the vaccine and thats why boris is addressing the nation instead of Hancock st 3 with the tier announcements.

Guardian journalist reporting following:

Josh Halliday @joshhalliday
Excl: Areas being placed into Tier 4 include all of north-east England, Cumbria, Cheshire, Warrington, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen, most of West Midlands, all East Midlands except Rutland, large parts of South West.

Excl Tier 3: Liverpool, Rutland, all Yorkshire and Humber, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, large parts of South West including Cornwall.

Nowhere will be in Tier 2. Only Isles of Scilly in Tier 1.

HibernatingTill2030 · 30/12/2020 15:03

Honestly at this point they may as well tier 4 everywhere. The (public health) priority at the moment should be to protect cases of this new variant spreading North. Probably locking the stable door after the horse has bolted, won the grand national and birthed three foals, though.

This would be hilarious if it weren’t so true!

RedToothBrush · 30/12/2020 15:06

Paul Brand
@PaulBrandITV
BREAKING: Huge swathes of England to move into Tier 4.

I understand it will include:

  • All of North East
  • Greater Manchester
  • Lancashire
  • Cumbria
  • Birmingham
  • Dudley
  • Sandwell
  • Walsall
  • Coventry
  • Wolverhampton
  • Solihull
  • Warwickshire
  • Staffordshire
  • Cheshire
  • Warrington
  • Stoke on Trent
  • Leicester and Leicestershire
  • Lincolnshire
  • Northamptonshire
  • Nottingham and Nottinghamshire
  • Derby and Derbyshire

Moving into Tier 3:

  • Liverpool
  • City of York
  • North Yorkshire
  • Worcestershire
  • Herefordshire
  • Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin
  • Wiltshire
  • Bath and NE Somerset
  • Dorset
  • Devon, Plymouth, Torbay
  • Cornwall

Everywhere else stays as it is. Nowhere will be in Tier 2 any longer. Only the Isles of Scilly will be in Tier 1.

Amira19 · 30/12/2020 15:55

I dont understand why he didn't just put the full UK in a lockdown and follow Scotland and Wales. I dont feel comfortable sending my primary school aged dc when I'm told to stay at home from work I dont see the logic.Hmm

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 30/12/2020 15:56

I agree @Amira19

Especially since there appears to have been a fair amount of people driving to places in other tiers to take advantage of things still being open there. That’s the last thing we want now.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 30/12/2020 15:57

@Amira19 - I agree

OrangeBananaFish · 30/12/2020 16:21

Selfishly I'd rather a full lockdown. My house is in tier 3 from tomorrow and my choice of supermarkets that I've been going to for years are now in tier 4 meaning I have to go to the expensive supermarket in my tier. Also my running route is limited as I'm not allowed to run into tier 4 (a couple of miles from my home). Fingers crossed it's not for too long. I know they're selfish reasons

🤣🤣

Brilliant reasons to put an entire area into lockdown.

It’s to benefit the children.
princessTiasmum · 30/12/2020 23:47

We were tier 2 now tier 3, but according to a friend of my daughters who volunteers at a hospital in a nearby town, they are over run, patients being transferred to other hospitals etc
I was at the vets with my cat today and have to wait outside, there were at least 4 ambulance passing both ways,3 with sirens going
I live quite close to our local hospital and was told they are full and transferring to James Cook in Middlesborough, some to Hull
It is terrible,I can't even think about it without almost having a panic attack, if I sneeze
