What do you think Boris is going to announce tomorrow? Is he going to announce a full lockdown the day before Christmas Eve?

The language used doesn't help.

It's usually started by media.

MUTANT virus - it's a variant strain due to mutation.

PLUNGED so emotive. We are moving in and out of tiers to check from the visits as we've known since about June last year when we started to come out of lockdown.

And yes to the person above who mentioned Hampshire.
I'm Hants. I'm surprised my town is 2 when Gosport is 4.
However Hants itself isn't too bad it's mainly Portsmouth, Havant and Rushmoor areas. But I agree Hants as a whole should be in tier 3 as a minimum as cases are rising slowly. As they are everywhere.

Bluebellpainting · 23/12/2020 10:00

The problem is some of these tier 4 areas are dotted in amongst tier 2. Some of them are served by the same hospitals as the surrounding tier 2 areas and their cases are lower than some tier 3 areas so I understand why these people feel frustrated. I work at one of these hospitals and many staff can’t understand it, we all know that one part being in tier 4 isn’t going help much when the cases are rising in the area overall.
Personally I think that announcing some areas will move to tier 4 on Boxing Day (if that is what is going to be said) is a very bad idea for several reasons

  1. it may cause some people to rethink the plans many may think ‘well if I’m going to be locked down tomorrow I may as well make the most of it now’ They will see more people and spread it more.
  2. People already in the tier 4 areas will be wondering why those in those areas can still mix on Xmas day (in each other’s houses, with no social distancing) if they are going to be in tier 4 a day later but those already in tier 4 can’t.
Basically if it is that bad that an area needs to go in to tier 4 why allow a relaxation of social distancing a mere 24 hours earlier.
GooodMythicalMorning · 23/12/2020 10:26

dh works in retail and they're being prepped for lockdown on the 27th. They've brought their sales in early because of it.

nosswith · 23/12/2020 10:31

@Bluebellpainting one of the aspects that the government has been very bad at (amongst many) is not having a clue about those changes that should be immediate, and those that should have some warning.

The worst of all was in March when initially it was 'don't go to pubs' so everyone rushed out and went for a last hurrah for three days until they were closed.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 23/12/2020 10:37

You’re probably local to us, we will deffo be in tier 4 asap

wanderings · 23/12/2020 10:48

@itsgettingweird
I agree the words used by the media, the lockdown zealots and Saint Boris himself are just awful, totally designed to get the public frothing.
Plunged.
Mutant.
Misery.
Alas.
"Squeeeeeeeeeeeze the brakes." (August)
Hit the pause button.
The Mumsnet favourite "selfish arsehole".
It won't last forever (I have yet to be convinced of this).
Desperately trying not to call it "lockdown", when that's what it is.
And of course, those stupid three-word slogans.

Spiratedaway · 23/12/2020 10:52

@icedancerlenny

Where I am in South Oxfordshire we have tier 4 within 3 miles in every direction except one! Abs our local market town is heaving and the pubs are rammed apparently! I am hoping we will be moved up to stop everyone descending on us!
I don't understand this ... i understand people are fed up and mental health suffering but shut down the whole country or not at all tiers obs don't work not that I know any better way
PimlicoJo · 23/12/2020 11:01

I agree with the message to go and watch Schitt's Creek instead, rather than feeling we're all up shit creek..... Moira Rose has kept me sane during lockdown.

Oh absolutely- there is so much that has been handled badly. And the trailing announcements, them coming into affect days later is a big part of that. But while that has been bad I think to tell people already in tier 4, we can’t put others into it because of Christmas is a new low. Either they need to be in tier 4 now or they don’t. Not tier 4 in 3 days time but 24 hours of less restriction before that.

Frankly321 · 23/12/2020 11:48

Hopefully Boris and co will implement a tough proper lockdown for the first time. Right through till Easter in order to save lives and protect the NHS.

No one leaves home unless they are a genuine key worker. Supermarkets closed with the army delivering food parcels. No construction or manufacturing.

No one goes out for walks or to the park.

Army on the streets issuing £5000 fines to non key workers seen out. Straight to prison for treat offenders.

One thing you can guarantee, what you have suggested there will never happen.
Summerstorms · 23/12/2020 11:54

@Frankly321

yeah, that's clearly not going to happen

Also I don't see what's wrong with going for walks or to the park? Anything that keeps people healthier should be a good thing

Yes, we heard you the first time.

Just had the same message from my wife - management told today that all retail everywhere closing for at least two weeks. Only exceptions supermarkets and pharmacies
Heathercob · 23/12/2020 12:02

Frankly, that wouldn't work - horses can't feed themselves 😱😱😱!

Frankly321 · 23/12/2020 12:04

@Heathercob

Saving lives of humans is more important than horses Hmm

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 23/12/2020 12:08

😳

Oh god, if you know me you’ll know I’ll never be able to work it out 😀

Rosebel · 23/12/2020 12:50

Just got a message from work. Sounds like they think 27th too. We're a supermarket though so will be working. My colleagues are nearly in tears over the thought of it.
So what would you say a key worker is?

OP posts:
Thevan · 23/12/2020 13:09

Announcement at 3pm today apparently, according to my journo daughter

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 23/12/2020 13:20

@Frankly321 I take it that is a joke ? As totally unenforceable

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 23/12/2020 13:28

Still nothing definite announced that I can see at the moment.
some are saying expect some areas to go to tier 4 and others to move to tier 3 and some saying possible lockdown countrywide but other than that all guess work

Do you actually want that? That will ruin so many people’s lives and is so unfair. For a virus that likely won’t kill them.
wanderings · 23/12/2020 13:37

Some people on mumsnet make Boris look sensible. The salivating over yet more draconian measures is unreal.

Don't be so bloody ridiculous. You're actually proposing that animals are just left to starve to death? Zoo animals......what about them? Stop all staff going in to feed them and look after them and just let them rot?
