@Pertella

But you can meet them in a pub 😉
No you can’t, no mixing indoors at all. You could meet them I a pub garden though, or I. Your own garden
Pertella · 15/10/2020 12:23

I've just checked, not even in the pub or a restaurant. Which means pubs and restaurants won't be getting much, if any, trade in the evenings.

Pertella · 15/10/2020 12:25

Can't imagine too many people doing that at the moment!

JuiceBogTrotter · 15/10/2020 12:25

I'm in Essex. Since the restrictions don't appear to apply to Thurrock or Southend, it would seem there is nothing stopping people meeting up in those local authorities? Business owners in Southend and Thurrock must be happy today.

Yes, I think this is quite one shocking aspect of the whole fiasco. They're very deliberately trying to reduce customers to pubs (the 10pm curfew, not allowing mixed household groups, which I would imagine are the vast majority of custom for all except very food-y pubs) but are 'keeping them open' and so not offering any financial support. It's shit to deliberately undermine an industry but refuse to support them.

That's how I've read it too
Polkadotties · 15/10/2020 12:40

MY OH was due to meet his brother and cousin in Chelmsford this weekend for a drink. His cousin lives in Kent, he’s just said they will go there instead

DramaLlama12 · 15/10/2020 12:40

@greysparkles No meeting in pubs and restaurants unless it’s a beer garden rule of 6 all socially distanced .
So if you’ve booked to go to a restaurant this weekend with another household this will NOT be allowed , assuming it’s inside

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 12:47

Of course people will just go across boundaries to meet up.
It Makes a bit of a mockery of it all.

I think in theory you're supposed to follow tier 2 rules even if you leave the area, since they've said that people in tier 2 areas could go on holiday to another part of the country but only with their own household. It seems unlikely to be enforced, though...
BunsyGirl · 15/10/2020 13:03

@Todaythiscouldbe My understanding is that if you live in Tier 2, you are meant to follow Tier 2 rules even if you travel to Tier 1. I doubt many people will follow this though. I live a few miles from the Herts border so I’m sure the bars and restaurants there will make some money out of this.

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 13:27

I can meet my friend in the Thurrock area but they can't go out with me in my area or meet up? I can't see my family in other parts of essex
Will they track our cars ? How can they possibly stop people traveling around anywhere to see family or friends. How will they know if people go inside the house in the area they are not meant to be in?
This is just lip service to try to stop a circuit breaker. Which might work.
Who knows? I will comply , but many won't of course and just go to a pub over the borders which isn't in tier 2. Which is good for them , but not in our areas pubs and restaurants which aren't!
Hmm. Have to see how it goes.

JuiceBogTrotter · 15/10/2020 13:37

It would be interesting to see if the numbers ruse in Southend and Thurrock in a few weeks. I suspect they won't too much, even if people go out of their way to go there with friends.

Polkadotties · 15/10/2020 13:38

Maybe they will close the Dartford bridge 🤣

Splodgetastic · 15/10/2020 13:39

Aren’t the rates in Southend and Thurrock higher anyway?

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 13:43

Southend has always been bad yet their council are not following the money .,

MrsBartlet · 15/10/2020 13:47

The wording of the tier 2 guidance says "If you live in a high alert level area you also cannot meet indoors with people outside of the area, unless exceptions apply." So you would not be allowed to pop to Southend or Kent to meet up in a pub or restaurant, although whether this is enforced remains to be seen.

Pertella · 15/10/2020 13:47

How many people from Thurrock or Southend are included in the Basildon or even Broomfield hospital figures?

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 13:55

Most people that live in Thurrock go to Basildon hospital I believe? Basildon was bad last time same as Southend hospital was.
Unless they track our cars I can't see how this will work?Means I can't go to lakeside now either. Which I haven't been to in ages, but it's still a blow to the economy all this as many do love shopping and browsing and they have everything over there and it's not far to get to. Christmas trade will suffer.
Will they be checking our driving licences at the door?
(It is mind blowing when you start to think about it logically! )
How will they police it?

You can still go shopping. With hundreds of strangers.
LangClegsInSpace · 15/10/2020 14:01

You can go to Lakeside, you just can't mix with other households while you're there (unless you're from Thurrock or Southend - but I think they'll also be tier 2 very shortly).

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 14:03

Right, so I can go out of tier 2 where I am and over to lakeside ( tier one) but can't see my family or go into their home?
Hmm.

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 14:04

How do they know that family are not meeting up in a big place like lakeside ( for example?) for a coffee? It is all very silly but I can see why it's being done. Got to give it a go!

LangClegsInSpace · 15/10/2020 14:04

You can see them outdoors.

MalmseyWhine · 15/10/2020 14:05

@Hardbackwriter

Just heard on local radio that Matt Hancock is likely to agree to the request for Essex to go into tier 2 today

Who knows with the government's erratic decision making but it'll make the whole thing look even more bonkers than it is if Essex goes onto tier 2 when there are areas elsewhere (e.g. parts of London) that by the government's own figures have three times the case rate currently but are on tier 1, it makes a mockery of claiming it's a data-driven process. There's also the issue of how you monitor Essex and take it back down if it went in without meeting the criteria in the first place; are we to wait until the council asks for us to come back out, as they asked for us to go in?

This is exactly my concern. What's the baseline for us to come out of Tier 2 restrictions?
