£1 per head in Tier 2 and £2 per head in Tier 3

Three extra cases in my part of Essex during the week ending 10 October when compared with previous week. What a joke!

Pertella · 13/10/2020 20:29

They are working on figures from a week ago when the extra cases were discovered, cases have since declined.

They are going to claim the funding and declare the restrictions have worked when the decline in cases that is already happening carries on.

AvoidingRealHumans · 13/10/2020 20:44

Does anyone think this will actually happen?
Surely areas can't request to be put into a higher tier Confused

Pertella · 13/10/2020 20:49

I cant imagine the government wanting to give any more money away then they can get away with to be fair.

But then again, who knows who's palms are being greased behind the scenes 🤷‍♀️

BunsyGirl · 13/10/2020 20:59

Maybe if everyone in Essex cancels the direct debit for their council tax, ECC will have a rethink!

Ormally · 13/10/2020 21:34

So the national plan was debated today - Tuesday. Measures introduced at midnight end of Tue-Weds. Does anyone know when this change of tier would mean the official introduction of the changes? Wednesday? Later?

Spacemonkey2016 · 13/10/2020 22:03

There's definitely palm greasing going on. Vicky Ford put a post on FB on Sunday evening saying something along the lines of 'I'm sorry to bring you the deeply sad news that Chelmsford's cases have gone from 15 per 100k to 45 per 100k in 11 days. This is extremely serious...yadda yadda yadda'. It was so bloody obvious they were going to do this. Absolute mugs.
Pertella · 13/10/2020 22:31

Yep, out of date figures are being used - they were artificially high the last week due to the extra cases being added but those numbers are being used to justify this.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 13/10/2020 22:38

I'm in Essex and mostly people around me are baffled , the general consensus is people will ignore it because they don't see it as valid because it's being touted for for people that have about as much respect from the community as Donald Trump.

Mind you I'm in one of the areas likely to exempt themselves. It would be economic suicide for this area and would be accepted if it was needed but this is taking the proverbial. The cases do seem to be increasing, the DC school had a positive case yesterday and other schools are being hit but we are nowhere near needing this. People simply cannot afford preventative measures that restrict earning. We are hardly a rich area as it is.

Dp was mildly concerned on the grounds if our area exempts themselves (which is very likely to happen) he still has to drive through the rest of Essex to work , if they start being difficult about what is essential travel this will cause a massive problem. He would probably have to move to his dm. (Although frankly she is in Wales so maybe the same problem at some point).

To be honest the general view seems to be that given the local community safety , police and PCso are literally incapable of even preventing people glue sniffing in public , they probably aren't going to have a lot of luck with a mass refusal to adhere to rules that are not required by the governments standard.

amicissimma · 13/10/2020 22:56

"Which means we need to restrict our borders (with proper quarantine for essential travel like imports). Any other restrictions are pointless unless we also do this."

I recommend a trip to Dover and watch our essential imports coming in. Lorry after lorry after lorry on ferry after ferry. Tens of thousands. See also the Channel Tunnel. Each lorry has a driver who will need to eat and drink and use the toilet and rest while he's in the UK. Each driver depends on delivering his load and getting his lorry back across the Channel to pick up the next load ASAP. How do you think we'll manage if each driver has to quarantine?

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 00:14

@amicissimma
Where there's a will there's a way. Other countries do it. (Admittedly it requires a bit of competence... perhaps we're fucked).

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 00:17

Lots of people looking for a new job.
Dover needs quarantine officers. There you go. And no I don't think everyone from.rvery part of the country can go to Dover. But there'll be plenty of locals and people living within commuting distance who can.

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 00:19

I think it's nearly bedtime. Too many typos!

Just heard on local radio that Matt Hancock is likely to agree to the request for Essex to go into tier 2 today and they played a snippet of a man from the council furiously denying that they are doing this for money, apparently he didn't even know there was a sum of money available Hmm

CuriousCat99 · 15/10/2020 07:44

Friends working in hospitals in Essex are saying the picture is not pretty and covid wards are becoming full, ITU becoming full...

Todaythiscouldbe · 15/10/2020 08:00

@curiouscat99 I heard differently yesterday. I imagine it totally depends which part of Essex. I'm in between 3 hospitals, 1 is becoming overwhelmed, the other 2 are absolutely fine.

Pertella · 15/10/2020 08:25

Figures being reported dont seem to match what your friend is saying.

Pertella · 15/10/2020 08:32

I know Southend Hospital has seen a slight rise in admissions.

But Southend (and Thurrock) don't come under ECC so they would still be on tier 1 anyway

ILookAtTheFloor · 15/10/2020 08:38

Surely everyone expects respiratory wards to start filling up at this time of the year? There's always pressure for beds.

Polkadotties · 15/10/2020 09:10

Hospitals are always overwhelmed at this time of year. They are always on blackwatch/blacklist.

Polkadotties · 15/10/2020 09:13

So according to news on the ECC website. There are currently 57 people in Essex hospitals with coronavirus, last month there was none. In the last three weeks there have been 13 deaths, following a month of no deaths.

Polkadotties · 15/10/2020 09:13

www.essex.gov.uk/news/the-data-that-shows-why-we-need-a-high-covid-19-alert-level Link to above data

Polkadotties · 15/10/2020 09:14

57 people with Covid doesn’t mean 57 went in with Covid. You can be in for something completely unrelated, pick up Covid in hospital and then be classed as a covid stat

Hardbackwriter · 15/10/2020 09:18

Just heard on local radio that Matt Hancock is likely to agree to the request for Essex to go into tier 2 today

Who knows with the government's erratic decision making but it'll make the whole thing look even more bonkers than it is if Essex goes onto tier 2 when there are areas elsewhere (e.g. parts of London) that by the government's own figures have three times the case rate currently but are on tier 1, it makes a mockery of claiming it's a data-driven process. There's also the issue of how you monitor Essex and take it back down if it went in without meeting the criteria in the first place; are we to wait until the council asks for us to come back out, as they asked for us to go in?
