London Tier 2 Lockdown?

daily fail link

This sounds pretty definite (yet another leak) - so no mixing of households inside at all from today in London?

@PineappleUpsideDownCake, indeed. I was anticipating my area to be tier 2 as our infection rate is >100 per 100,000.

I guess the gov is also using hospitalisation data too and we must still be low in our area on this (Greater London).

Breadandroses1 · 12/10/2020 23:20

Gah. My mum hasn't seen the kids since Feb. We are London but low rates area. She used to see them every week when she was here for work, and would stay over so we could pop to the pub- she lives 6 hours travel away.

Over the summer, when we had a window where we were going to visit, her partner became very ill so they kept contacts down. She was planning to come to us on half term, but I bloody bet we go into tier 2 just before. I just really want them to see their grandma. We don't have any family close at all and it's been so tiring. No breaks.

@PimlicoJo

I'm in London. My niece has arrived from overseas to stay with me and is 11 days into her 14 day quarantine. No covid symptoms. Just doing the right thing. Meanwhile Kanye West and his daughter are swanning around London as it seems quarantine doesn't apply to them.

That Scottish MP knowingly travelled after testing positive for Covid because the rules apparently didn't apply to her either.

I'm the most law abiding person there is but it's all a mess now. .

I expect London to get stricter measures (although my Borough has low rates of infection) but who will adhere to them? There's no enforcement. How do we get out of this mess?

Kanye West is the least of anyone's worries. He's more at risk from catching it in London than giving it to anyone (he's apparently had it already but there's the possibility of reinfection).

He most likely travelled by private jet, and he certainly won't have headed off from the airport onto busy public transport. The many thousands of other international arrivals however...

As for apparent low rates of infection. How do you know? The UK testing is a shambles. In any event it's not low anywhere in London - and it's creeping up rapidly.

Bear in mind a virus will spread quicker and more easily amongst a high density city of 9 million inhabitants than a more sparsely populated area.

Confused by this. Highest per 100,000 rate in London is 111 in Richmond.

Other tier 2 lockdown places are more like 400 per 100,000..?

SheepandCow · 12/10/2020 23:44

@Lau52

My parents live Greater London and rates doubled recently now at 118/100,000. So would expect to go into tier 3.
Too much money is made in London. The people who benefit don't live full-time or permanently in London themselves so don't worry or care about what happens to Londoners - lives or long-term economy. These people live in the shires or in tax havens abroad. They're not thinking beyond the middle of next week. Blinded by short-term greed (and the ability to shelter literally and financially from all the risks).

Sadiq Khan knows this, he knows his city, and he wants to take proactive measures before things get worse - to prevent them ever getting that bad. Unfortunately it seems he's (for now) being ignored.

Perhaps part of the reason London's not under stricter restrictions is because of the difficulty in enforcing it. People won't want a pointless hardship - which is what tier 3 (or stricter) is without border restrictions.

Liverpool is under tier 3 as a whole city - not it's individual boroughs.

For the same reason (interconnected city) London can't be divided into individual boroughs. People live, shop, work, and go to school across boroughs. The tube travels across London. Viruses too.

Also what do you want to do? Wait until it gets worse and even more people are in hospital or dead? The time to act is before things spiral out of control.
mintrose · 12/10/2020 23:50

My borough has one of the highest rates in London. I'm expecting a move to Tier 2 soon.

It wouldn't affect my life much personally. My family are being very cautious so still only meeting outdoors (and even then very rarely). I don't really have any friends I'd meet up with. We only do holidays as a household so our holiday plans won't change. My main concern is that DD can access her nursery and activities, and it looks like they wouldn't be affected even in a Tier 3 scenario.

FieldsAndSun · 12/10/2020 23:54

Sadiq Khan has said that calls to GPs/111 and blood donor antibodies are showing a much higher level of infection than track or trace alone. As it is, cases are appearing to have doubled in a week in some boroughs, and that is without considering all the cases that are going undocumented. I fear London needs to be in Tier 2 now or it could face restrictions for far longer.

CallmeFP · 13/10/2020 17:25

Khan assuring today that London will be tier 2 by the end of the week. Let’s see if Boris agrees.

DAMN DAMN DAMN. He could at least let me see 2 socially distanced friends Friday night & level up on Monday.
cheninblanc · 13/10/2020 17:52

He's been saying this for weeks though, I won't believe it now till its official I don't think! I genuinely thought end of last week, then yesterday and now another date given? Is all this to drive people into pubs meeting up to push to spend money for our one last time 🤔

Unfortunately he's also being ignored by the (apparently, according to the media) 'London centric' government. Yep, that's the same government who is repeatedly ignoring London's mayor and who excluded him from discussions during the first wave. The government that allowed direct daily flights from Wuhan into London long after the situation was clear (only stopped after China closed its borders), and the government that locked down too late to save the lives of thousands of Londoners. Yes, very 'London centric'...!

Sadiq knows his city, he knows the devastating consequences of an uncontained virus spreading rapidly through a densely populated city of millions. He very sensibly wants action taken before things get worse. He realises the futility of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

cheninblanc · 13/10/2020 18:19

Sheepandcow I don't for a second doubt it's needed, we've two clusters at work in the last week, but all this tmrw, the next day etc isn't really working. It's pushing people to go out that one last time....

SheepandCow · 13/10/2020 18:55

That's a good point @cheninblanc
To be honest I'm a bit surprised London hasn't yet been put under stricter measures. I thought (or hoped) lessons had been learned from the first wave. Evidently not.

Mind you, I didn't expect to see the government persisting with this ridiculous divisive regional tier nonsense. The way it's spreading in most parts of the country, I thought we'd finally see a national approach. I should know by now, you'd think. I was shocked when we didn't restrict the borders back at the start. I genuinely expected them to do it, once the severity of the situation became clear. I was sadly wrong.

SquirmOfEels · 13/10/2020 18:58

London half terms start next week, so they might want to get restrictions in before that.

Because families going and mixing with extended family up,and down the country is exactly what we need now

Both Khan and Starmer are talking in terms of circuit breaker. Which is basically new rhetoric for old lockdown

cheninblanc · 14/10/2020 19:13

All talk seems to have gone quiet on London?

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 19:17

@cheninblanc

Wait a few more weeks - another month perhaps. Then look at London's hospitalisation and death figures.
(In extra cynical moments, I wonder whether London will see more cases of 'flu' or 'pneumonia than anywhere else...)

cheninblanc · 14/10/2020 19:20

Sheepandcow I thought we were expecting tier 2 this week?

CallmeFP · 14/10/2020 19:21

Its awful that they don’t say anything about London while Sadiq Khan is banging on non stop that is immediately inevitable (this week). They must have some idea!

CallmeFP · 14/10/2020 19:22

@cheninblanc seems like the battle of khan, sage v Boris and the ‘hawks’ particularly over London.

CallmeFP · 14/10/2020 19:23

Forgot to say Keir along with Sadiq, Sage versus the Tory hawks.

cheninblanc · 14/10/2020 19:25

Callmefp I just feel so anxious, they are def doing it now it's silent! I hate it

CallmeFP · 14/10/2020 19:29

@cheninblanc me too, you’re not alone. Not knowing what and when will be happening in the coming weeks is nerve wracking indeed. Can’t make any plans just in case.

It’s clear that they’re avoiding going into tier 2 in London until it’s too late.

cheninblanc · 14/10/2020 19:37

We've got tables booked for dinner, half term etc. I'm happy to give it all up to follow the rules but just wish they'd stop suggesting it but not doing it. They are clearly leaving it to the wire but with half term for many schools next week I don't think that's the right way. Mine have another still in school luckily so won't be pushing to meet with friends up there
