The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

I wouldn't care one way or t'other if the Queen (or any member of the Royal Family) makes a statement to the nation.

It will not cheer me up.
It will not make going to my NHS face-to-face job any easier .

I think they are a phenomenal drain on the tax payer ( and yes I know how much they bring in with tourism) but the Queen is one of the wealthiest women in the world .
And yet the tax payer foots the bill for renovations to her properties ( members of the family moving in and after the fire )

So yes , they are elderly at risk.
Let them keep themselves to themselves . They can get on with their lives with no impact on mine .
They do not enhance my life at all.
I won't worry about them trying to get Health Care or a hospital bed because there won't be any issues .

User721 · 25/03/2020 16:01

One thing they could do is give money, they have plenty of it.

Dyrne · 25/03/2020 16:01

I don’t understand though? There is plenty of money for respirators, the issue is currently with the supply chain to literally make the things, which is being worked on. Likewise with PPE for front line workers - it’s not a matter of needing the Royals to give some cash.

And as I’ve said, Palaces are horrendously inadequate for using as extra space, we have much more sensible places to use instead. It’s not like back in the Wars where Conference centres etc didn’t really exist.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 16:01

@SarahInAccounts

Isnt your comment goady rather than actually replying to my above points?

I will take valid criticism but your comment is just twee and meaningless Grin

The queen is still doing red boxes and calls to the pm daily, but at 94 needs to isolate. All on the BBC news today.

TheWordmeister · 25/03/2020 16:02

I for one do NOT want a reassuring message from the bloody queen, nor any of those spongers.

Nothing would annoy me more.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 16:02

@Dyrne

Open palaces for relief funds afterwards, yay or nay?

OP posts:
moondance19 · 25/03/2020 16:05

Dammed if they do ......dammed if they don't!

Yep, and as long as we have such an undemocratic unfair nstitution it always will be.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 25/03/2020 16:05

I agree with @Dyrne people can't have it both ways. I reckon half the people saying "Royals are useless" are actually feeling pretty useless themselves right now and taking it out on the Queen.

Dyrne · 25/03/2020 16:06

Wolfgirrl how do you mean? Sell them off to raise money? To who?

RasberryRoyale · 25/03/2020 16:07

I agree with @TheWordmeister. How is a scripted message meant to make people feel better?

Sorry you have just lost your job Mrs Brown, have 3 kids and are wondering how you will pay your bills whilst trying to look after three kids but here’s a nice message from the most pampered, over privileged old woman in the country- don’t you feel wonderful now?

lyralalala · 25/03/2020 16:11

PC can waive/freeze all rent on the Duchy

That would be a massive political statement as it would be seen as putting direct pressure on Housing Associations and local authorities (and private landlords) to do the same

Younger royals without health problems can join NHS volunteers

Eugenie and her husband have been doing so under the radar and then got absolutely slated for 'attention seeking' when it was spotted.

If it's not under the radar then there are security implications adding more pressure to police at a time when they need it least

If it is completely under the radar then we won't know about it

They can auction a painting/jewels to raise money for ventilators

There are no ventilators to buy. The issue with ventilators is production, not funding

They can pledge to open all their stately homes and gardens once the pandemic is over to raise money for relief funds, help local businesses etc

And they'd be roundly slated for attention seeking and diverting headlines from important things to them

thatgingergirl · 25/03/2020 16:14

Lifeisabeach09 - perhaps the RF like to buy British! (They could chip in here www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/25/airbus-dyson-firms-waiting-uk-green-light-produce-ventilators-coronavirus)

willowpatterns · 25/03/2020 16:15

You say yourself that you're not a royalist, so what difference would a message from QEll make to you?

managedmis · 25/03/2020 16:15

To me it's just further proof that they don't give a toss about their 'subjects'

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 16:16

No they wouldn’t, but even if there were, so what. But they won’t because they don’t care.

Really? You think they'd be slated? I don't agree

daisychain01 · 25/03/2020 16:18

The reason the PoW has Corona virus is because he carried on doing public duties longer than he needed to. He could have locked down in Feb, but kept going.

@thatgingergirl, yeah, maybe. Grin

What, apart from her speaking French as if it were her own language, her encyclopaedic knowledge of current affairs, her understanding of politics, her knowledge of the animal kingdom. Riiiiiight.....

Blimey! What are the kids doing in school then if all it takes to have a proper education is this list? Surely a 5 year old who is so keen and knowledgeable about the animal kingdom and speaks French as a second language (because French is the only existing language besides English, you know) only need 2 more years......3 tops to catch up on Labour, Tory, Bojo, etc and the Kardashians and wah-lah! Why waste more time in prisons schools?

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 16:21

The Queen didn't even have a proper education ffs

And yet she manages to comprehend complex documents every day and has a wealth of experience of steadying the ship of state for almost 70 years. I’d trust her judgement over the Oxford educated PM any day of the week.

didofido · 25/03/2020 16:22

Do you think a non-political president as Head of State would be cheaper, better, more interesting? And we'd have to turn out regularly to vote for her/him. Dull.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 16:23

@lyralalala

You've made a point on the first couple but slated for opening their palaces? Surely no more slated than doing virtually nothing?

Surely better to be slated for doing something to help than doing nothing?

With all due respect, he wasn't down the pit for 14 hours a day, was he? You'll have to excuse my non bleeding heart
